And so it begins.

Despicable, but hardly a shock. Hong Kong is a disgrace, and democratic nations should be boycotting all business and trade with it. Legally and politically HK is now just a puppet of Communist China, with the executive (murderous Carrie Lam) , judicial system and police all arms of the Communist party.

Boycott Hong Kong! Boycott Communist China!

two outlets unapologetically pro-democracy and critical of Beijing.

The arrest must please those who constantly attack something they call 'the media', those same people who push for authoritarian systems to replace democracies.

If China knows anything about change management, then it wouldn't have suddenly enforced a huge change that affects so many stakeholders.

But I guess they don't give a s___ , and decided their vision is to become the global villain.

And so it begins.

His life is a rags to riches story. He arrived in Hong Kong aged 12 fleeing communist China. Lai toiled in sweatshops, taught himself English and eventually founded the hugely successful Giordano clothing empire

RESPECT.

Beijing's deadly 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy students in Tiananmen Square turned him political and he became one of the few tycoons in Hong Kong willing to criticize China

EVEN MORE RESPECT.

Russia and China are expanding their sphere of influence. That's what happens if you have a weak leader in the White House.

11 ( +15 / -4 )

Beijing's autocratic rulers may presently be on a roll winning battles in Hong Kong, but will one day inevitably lose the war along with their self-styled "Mandate of Heaven". Freedom is a stern mistress, merciless with those who would defy her will and who have forgotten that those who cannot remember their history are condemned to repeat it.

This is a clear violation of the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration.

The Brits should take back Kowloon Peninsula and Hong Kong Island.

The Brits should take back Kowloon Peninsula and Hong Kong Island.

Rather than engaging in an unwinnable conflict that would cost lives and $Billions, the UK should speed up plans to allow the 3 million HK Citizens over 23 years old to settle permanently in the UK within 1-2 years. Other democracies can resettle those under 23 years old.

Hong Kong will then be effectively left a penniless swamp with only the communist criminals choosing to remain.

only targets a minority

watch out for that one, in any circumstance.

picking on any minority is never a good idea. I see it frequently in the western nations too, stayed in the name of the “greater good”.

next time to see it in your local context, think about that and how the Chinese communists are using it in theirs.

Majority of Hong Kong support the arrest of Mr. Jimmy Lai.

One country, one system.

-13 ( +1 / -14 )

We (Hong Kong PEOPLE) don't mind to live in one system, two systems...etc. As long as the society is stable, no riots on the street, won't be attacked if you've different political standpoint....etc. Although we still have to face many restrictions in tackling the COVID-19, we are happier as compared with the 2019's riot.

Seems the CCP is getting their posters onto the interwebz to start pushing propaganda.

This site is banned in China, the only Chinese there who can access it are those with government approval.

Only if they hate freedom and support communist dictatorships, murderous Emperor Xi and his puppet Lam, they would. The intelligent and democracy-loving Hong Kong citizens are making plans to get out - now.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

I support Mr Lai and all HK democrats and to hell with Emperor Xi and mainland China’s imperialistic actions. Xi is the new Mao, we must stop him

We’ve been through this before, sport. The logistics of settling 3 million Hong Kongers in the UK are impossible. The UK has a huge problem with housing, particularly affordable housing. This isn’t an anti-immigration argument - these are hard facts

4 ( +5 / -1 )

It is very common for us to migrate to other countries over the past several decades – no need to exaggerate. It seems not so many of us have planning to migrate (because of the New Security Laws).  If they leave, we are happy to say farewell to them.

-17 ( +2 / -19 )

The logistics of settling 3 million Hong Kongers in the UK are impossible.

Never mind logistics or impossibility. They have an obligation to settle the 3 million. And since they are banned from receiving welfare payments, these educated people will be a huge economic boost to the UK with IT startups, doctors, lawyers and many businesses. The UK would be wise to embrace these ex "colonials", and be the envy of the EU.

If they leave, we are happy to say farewell to them.

As I have stated, the smart, educated, non-communists will leave, and have a far better life than those in that awful police-state Hong-Kong.

The world was fooled back in 1994 when we opened our arms and markets to help the people of China raise their standard of living. Instead we created the world's most powerful dictatorship. And now the CCP feel they are economically and militarily powerful enough to toss the "Peaceful Rise" lie and just do whatever they want.

A country the size of China will not just turn on a dime and become democratic. Different actors but it’s the same play. Looking at its history, we can predict the CCP will be in power for a few more hundreds of years. The next government or dynasty after the CCP will no doubt also be authoritarian. If you break China up into a bunch of little states like Europe or Hong Kong or Taiwan that would be plausible but they don’t have the sources for political theory and philosophy. They’re not reading Plato, Calvin, Hobbes, Mill, Locke, Rousseau, Paine and so on. The media is the CCP and the culture is still Confucian. There is little hope of externally induced change. It has to be corruption or an inner divide of some kind.

This message will be removed within minutes ..... but I think it's important

to say this again and again - the above message was written by a Beijing troll

The more you boycott Hong Kong, the more Hong Kong becomes Chinese. The more you pay Hong Kong, the more you help feed China. At this point, if a government really wants to stick it to the CCP, they should just recognize Taiwan as an independent nation.

That's not true, the latest election as proof, close to 90% of the seats are pro democratic.

Chinese government has sent millions of students abroad since 1985 – nearly 45 years. I understand many of them have stayed and not returning to China. Those come back have built up the economy/industries. Chinese workers are very hardworking whereas they can work 12 hours*7 days. Also, saving ratio are very high for Chinese.

China is not authoritarian and she is a collective responsible government.

-9 ( +3 / -12 )

The CCP is cracking down now. Plenty of stories from HK like this from now on.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

"They arrested him at his house at about 7am. Our lawyers are on the way to the police station," Mark Simon, a close aide of Lai's, told AFP, adding that other members of the tycoon's media group had also been detained.

This Mark Simon, an ex FBI agency, was heard in Taiwan for the time being is also wanted by hk police. what a story? Isn't it a great Hollywood movie material?

It looks like they are correct. I’m still convinced by the prediction that eventually the US will accept Chinese hegemony in East Asia. Any ideas of an autonomous Tibet, let alone an independent one, have long gone. Hong Kong has effectively gone. Taiwan will be next.

This looks more likely than other predictions about the Chinese economy about to ‘implode’. As I work closely with Chinese companies, I’ve been reading these predictions for over two decades now.

Lets all just refuse to visit China or buy anything made in China.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

This is the final chapter of the independence of HK as it was known. I'm sure the communists will inevitably follow up with further arrests, most of which will go unreported. Here comes the new cold war. And instead of being watched on your tv in your living rooms, it will be online and interactive. Am I wrong Ping An? But, I don't want you to misinterpret. Quite the opposite. I have made handsome capital gains because of the likes of you. Keep it up.

One country . . . Two systems? Not! China should be punished for this and other despicable acts against its own people.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

What ARE Washington, London, New Delhi & others planning? I think we need a few more visits to Taiwan.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada should NOT allow any HK citizens. Let them remain in their country to survive on their land who boast about their last 50 years history and now they want to escape from China? Cowards!

And any HK id holders who live overseas, claim $10000 soon.

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

Rather than engaging in an unwinnable conflict

The Brits will have won as soon as it hold China to the rules based order.

Clear the CCP has violated the joint declaration, they should be recorded in history as the mob that lost Kowloon Peninsula and Hong Kong Island for a second time. Not doing so is allowing the CCP and their lawlessness to win.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Jimmy Lai is a symbol of tge struggle, the hero of ordinary people. We can't let him be maltreated by a bunch of thugs like this. There will be no stopping of the CCP if they can get away with cancelling two systems.

Remember this is all alongside illegal island building in international waters, sinking fishing vessels, spreading kung flu throughout the globe.

If it walks like a cockroach, acts like a cockroach, and behaves like a cockroach, then it is a cockroach.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Those pseudo communist bastards have also arrested HK activist Agnes Chow this evening. I am deeply shocked, although only such a reaction by that dictatorship could be expected.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Lock that sob up and throw away the key. He deserves everything he gets.

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

it is better let hk people have their say. also we can judge if HK is turning better or worse. if people are getting happier and economy is getting stronger what the difference is between one system or two system.we should not impose things we like on other people. Different people have different opinion which is true democracy.

Hong Kong "Hang Seng Index" soars after the arrest of Jimmy Lai! No worries Hong Kong, the people were doing fine!

It's been a while the HSI has lost its correlation to the "people" it's under heavy intravenous injection from HK and China.
