The Chinese Government is so afraid of Democracy they they find the need to destroy anything that reaps it.
However, in the end Democracy will prevail.

Chilling. All the more reason we all should stop enabling China. We created this mess by enabling their economy. The least we can do is stop supporting China economically and support our local economies instead.
Hong Kong is over, and has been ever since they passed the CCP security law.
Get out while you can

This is what awaits Taiwan if the world does not stand up to China.

what awaits any place and anyone really

The idea of a free press is under attack all over the globe by anti-democracy/pro-authoritarian forces some financed and backed by authoritarian regimes. China like several other authoritarian states has paid keyboard warriors to use 'western' free press' while attacking the idea of a free-press.

Fighto!
Raids on citizens who promote freedom and democracy? Par for the course in despicable terror state, Hong Kong.
Boycott all business with terror state Hong Kong.
Boycott Communist China.
Fighto!
100% correct.
There will come a point - possibly next year - where the HK authorities will prohibit regular citizens from leaving. No sympathy for anyone eligible (most Hong Kongers) if they do not take up British citizenship and move permanently.

"semi-autonomous"?
Make that FORMERLY semi-autonomous.

Basically, everything the HK protesters were predicting and fighting against has come to pass. Taiwan needs to be saved and recognized by all major countries at all cost.

The Trump non-response to China's takeover of HK in 2019....the gift to the CCP that keeps on giving...
And he STILL has most of his Trump Collection clothing line made in Chinese sweatshop factories...

Alternative reality? I remember the Trump haters in this forum lambasting Trump for signing the HK Democracy Protection Act, in 2019, because he was causing a "trade war" with China and all that.
How minds change....
Garthgoyle
Yeah, sure. But it costs money to pay proper wages for factory workers outside that country and it's sooooo much cheaper to keep producing everything over there.
In the meantime, let's all play the game "we pretend-care about human rights blah" let's boycott Beijing Olympics.
bass4funk
Not for Hong Kong.
How? Xi didn’t go into HK and changed it overnight, it happened under everyone’s noses in small incremental steps. So and now the new President will do what to fix it?
Busby
Now that is an alternate reality....in 2019 Trump was praising and thanking Xi.....

How minds fade...
It happened under Trump's "watch" - you know, like he said about 9/11.....

I view it as a distraction for westerners. If you do too much then it confuses a world driven by party politics.

“However, in the end Democracy will prevail.”
as much as I hope for that… but Good Luck!

Not about what is going on in HK at the present.
Speaking of the current President, how is he going to help HK??
The huge difference is on 9/11 Americans were killed on American soil.

Democracy. A term bandied about as if it signifies something, which it doesn't.
Nanfu Wang, documentary film maker, latest, In The Same Breath, about the pandemic and the similarity of the initial responses in China & USA:
"I've lived under authoritarianism in China and under so called freedom in the USA - in both systems people become casualties of their leaders pursuit of power. "

Common diplomatic talk. You do not insult other countries leaders in public. If there is an archive function, you can easily find how the Trump haters lambasted him for signing the HK Democracy Protection Act. Starting a trade war with China, they called it. All forgotten?
WHAT happened "under Trumps watch"? The UK signed the HK return treaty with China in 1984 (against better advice), and after that, the track was set. There was nothing Trump could have done to prevent the CCP from violating the treaty conditions. His signing the HK Democracy Protection Act was a proper and reasonable response.

Well, Xi's move was subtle and calculated and Trump had to deal with his second impeachment (which he soundly beat) but now that we have a new President that doesn't have all the baggage, what is he doing to help these people?
Europe is doing that already, so that's it? And Biden is telling his old friend what again?
We just covered that, so now focus, the current President will tell his buddy what? This is after all a very serious situation and Biden brags about the US upholding democracy, so he is doing that how? Deflecting to the former President is just as nutty as when the left blames Bush for not trying to stop 9/11 just don't continue to embarrass yourselves, just stick to the current and relevant time and place, so Biden will do what now?

This is what dictatorships do. It was always going to happen at some point. These folks were high profile and should have escaped when they could. Martyr is a rubbish career.
Dictatorships do fall and it is possible to disseminate accurate information within one on the sly. But you have to be a whole lot sneakier than this.
Unless you are prepared to get your hands dirty, get out whilst you can.

The Trump non-response to China's takeover of HK in 2019....the gift to the CCP that keeps on giving...
Really? Because it was only opposed by a lone republican in the House.
Also, Really? Because in an appearance on Fox & Friends shortly after the bill's passage, Trump said that he might veto the bill, saying that it might impact his talks with China over the U.S.-China trade war, saying, "We have to stand with Hong Kong, but I'm also standing with President Xi; he's a friend of mine."
Zaphod

I dont know what Fox and Friends has to do with anything here. Fact is, he signed it, fact is our Trump haters here criticized him for that, fact is the bill was completely sensible and the only thing that could be done, fact is Trump imposed tarrifs on China, kicked out the Confucius propaganda institute, stopped Chinese contracts in US national projects, stopped governments from using CCP-controlled TicToc, and fact is that Biden reversed all of this.
Seems to me that blind Trump hatred is clouding a lot of vision here.
Happy Day
Busby and Smith- why were many HK protestors waving Trump flags?
And despite Biden helping the bad guys in Afghanistan, we’re supposed to believe he would’ve taken on Xi in HK?
Nice try though.
starpunk
There was an American public backlash - many Americans didn't want Ivanka's name on the rear end of their pants anymore so her fashion line folded up. However, Trump kissed Xi's and Kim's fannies. He was 'lovey-dovey' with Kim, even gave him a 'Rocketman' CD as a gift. And in 2019 he claimed to be the 'Chosen One' too.
bass4funk
Not an excuse, just goes to show you how opportunistic the Chinese are and they took it and the Dems though were just too busy trying (and failed) to impeach this guy.
That goes both ways and this time around next year the Democrats will feel that wrath.
You’re making excuses for China and the Dems continuously chase this guy.
By talking and being lectured?
Because they see and know what China is. Xi may have a great relationship with Biden, but not the rest of the nation.
bass4funk
No, he didn’t. That tariff war ticked Xi off to the absolute end.
Why not try and have a dialogue with a rogue nuclear power, doesn’t hurt to try. At least he tried, the last 3 previous Presidents did not.
bass4funk
If he were President, but Biden is.
Same here
Like what?
Given what happened in Crimea back in 2014 who can blame them? In all honesty….
