How long until Xi orders in the tanks? We all know that the CCP fears freedom.

It is difficult for people who lived in democracy to live in China. I do not hear people emigrate to China from democratic countries.

Im guessing that a whole lot of social credit point have been lost recently....good for the construction industry though. Those re-education/concentration camps don't build themselves. One day all races will live in harmony behind the razor wire of The people's Repubic of China.

Some people just don't want to take that Great Leap Forward, into the abyss. Those that manage to survive will lament their ancestors for not resisting enough. Crouching tiger, hidden camera.

From RTHK in Hong Kong:
This does not bode well. I get the feeling this may well be the proverbial "warning shot across the bow" to the Hong Kong government and the protestors to put an end to this unrest..... or else!
CrazyJoe
The Chinese government needs to understand that this is not Tiananmen Square version 2. These are not Mainland Chinese protesting for some abstract concept of freedom that they've only heard about. Hong Kongers know what freedom is. They've had it all their lives. Nobody is going to give it up, no matter how hard the government tries to stomp on them. The greater the repression, the bigger the protests will grow.

Interesting idea. They’re educated and cultured, they’d be of immense value to the economy here. The question is would China be willing to swap a prosperous HK for a compliant one. And would Japan want a bunch of potentially noisy HK dissidents in the country.?

Power to the people! I hope the protesters come out on top in these protests. I mean hell, they've even had the Chinese triads from the mainland sicked on them by the PRC.

Of course not; China is a paradise they wanna keep a safe distance from.
They immigrate to Japan instead, lambasting it on a daily basis here on JT, whilst lavishing praises on China.

Hong Kong is a poisoned chalice for the Chinese autocrats. Like all blinkered power-driven humans they know not what they are about to sup.

When Britain left Hong Kong, Peking said that the people of Hong Kong would be allowed to rule themselves, except in foreign policy. So much for that promise. Dictators want to dictate, not negotiate.

There's a lot of people in HK who remember the freedoms they had as a UK protectorate/colony and they ain't about to just give it up!
Red China's excuse will be that the Chinese Empire (which is no more) made that agreement. And with the remaining 'superpowers' being ruled by the dictators Putin and Trump, Xi probably thinks nobody will stop his 'crackdown' on HK.

If people around the world ceased buying Chinese goods then the Chinese might begin to realize that the world disapproves of the Hong Kong situation!

It takes some pretty serious screw ups by the HK city govt to get sizeable protests in Hong Kong. It isn't in their nature, until they are REALLY, REALLY afraid of the end-game.
Lam screwed up. She's lost all public trust and won't last for the next election in 2022.
The people still protesting in HKG aren't leaving for many years. Their next step is to "visit" Beijing and embarrass the govt there, quietly, silently, anonymously. I can see thousands of Bill Clinton masks being sold to help.
The signal can't be stopped.

Once again, for history:
For many years the Chinese HK population rioted against their treatment at the hands o9f the British. To quell the rioting, Colonial Secretary Edgeworth B. David ordered extra manpower from the British Forces Hong Kong, including armored troops of 7th Hussars, to reinforce the Hong Kong Police and disperse the rioters. In total, there were 59 deaths and approximately 500 injuries. Property damage was estimated at US$1,000,000.[
There was similar rioting in 1966 and again in ...
Ask Mandela about the actions of the British in South Africa or Gandhi about the action of the British in India.

There are ways of protesting without violence riots.
General strike: close public utilities, airports, rail, buses, electricity, gas, all government services. No government will tolerate indefinite violet rioting.

I'm afraid the sad reality is HK needs to rely on China, and nothing good will come of these protests that are just thorns to the hand that feeds you.
Wesley
HKers don't want to be fed by the hand of the communist dictators. They want to cut off that diseased hand. And HKers are not thorns. They are diamonds that are very hard and can resist pressure.
ushosh123
Yes, resist my friend... Your economy and main food supply is not tied or related to china whatsoever.
stormcrow
The Hong Kongers are brave and passionate people and I hope they achieve their goals, but I'm worried for their safety.
starpunk
Get up, stand up! Stand up for your rights. You've got to fight for your neighborhood. The Chinese government Politburo is violating the treaties. Give them resistance, give them hell, Hong Kongers!
Ganbare Japan!
The HK Police are nothing but violent thugs and traitors, acting for their Communist bosses. Hong Kong Citizens must hit them hard and fight them with all the force they have. Never give in! Democracy is worth fighting for.
The free world is right beside you, HK citizens. Fight back at those police and other thugs who hate democracy! Show the police no mercy.
Ganbare Japan!
HK does NOT need mainland for food. HK can afford food from democracies Japan, EU, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand. Far, far better than awful Chinese food.

Sure you won't starve, you'll find a way, but tread carefully, the academic / popular decision is not always the best one. Never mind where the food is sourced, how you pay for it certainly is associated with china.

I'd love to agree with you but with America ruled by an obnoxious kiss-up Nero and his cabinet plagued with 'yes' people, the 'free world' doesn't include America anymore and HKers are going to have to look at somebody else for inspiration. Sadly the HKers are on their own in this but still democracy is worth the fight! And hanging on in quiet desperation is the HK way in this scenario.
