He was shot in the process of attacking and assaulting a police officer and should face the court.
Kuro
yes he should face the court. But 1) he should be allowed to defend himself in front of the court, so they should wait until his discharge to be charged (if he recovers, charging a dead person is not really a good idea). 2) lot of policemen should be charged for this and other incidents in HK and none of them has been yet. They don't even release names.
rlperez@hotmail.com.au
Kuro: 1. He is not expected to die- don't put it on. 2. It is normal to be charged for an offence even if in hospital. 3. He will be allowed legal representation and defence - don't put it on. 4. The police have been doing their job and trying to stop RIOTING, the damage to infrastructure, and protecting the public and private business-don't put it on.
There is a difference between protesting and RIOTING which you apparently are not aware of. Protesting is legal, RIOTING is not. When the people involved were protesting the police were tolerant, but when the RIOTERS starting to attack police with metal bars, petrol bombs and started to vandalise then they reacted appropriately.

There's a strange omission in this article. Did anyone notice it? Isn't it standard to explain where someone got shot? There's a reason for this omission.
If the HK Police are so confident that their man acted "correctly and appropriately," then why did they feel the need to lie about what happened in order to make the officer sound more humane? The HK Police announced in the press conference that the officer had shot the protester in the "left shoulder," which was repeated by the media. One example is here:
https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/hong-kong-protester-shot-in-the-chest-by-a-live-round-media
However, that is not the truth. He was shot in the chest, 10cm from the heart. If you watch the video, you can see it plainly. Photos on all news sites show it clearly as well.
However, "shot in the chest from point-blank range" sounds bad, especially when we're talking about an 18-year-old schoolboy. So, the CCP propaganda machine had to swoop in and change the story to make it sound as if the police were professionally and reasonably acting out of self defense.
Right.
I'm not defending someone who attacked a police officer, if that's how it in fact happened. People need to be better and smarter than that. But if that is what happened...then why lie?
The Original Wing
Re: my post above - I just realized something interesting. In the article itself, both the title and the second paragraph refer to the boy as being shot "in the left shoulder." However, the link to the article says "shot in the chest." Makes me wonder if the original version of the article told the truth, and then the Propaganda Police came demanding that they change it. And they did...but forgot to update the URL. Curious.
rlperez@hotmail.com.au
"shot in the chest from point-blank range" sounds bad, especially when we're talking about an 18-year-old schoolboy." This "18-year-old school boy" attacked a police officer with and iron bar and this was televised by CNN and commented on by the reporter. The officer in question was cornered and surrounded by about 4-5 rioters all swinging metal bars.
Arguing whether it was the shoulder or top of the chest is futile. Had the RIOTER not attacked the police he would have been shoot in SELF DEFENCE. No PEACEFUL protester was attacked by the police but the police did try to control RIOTERS and limit their vandalism and violence. The RIOTERS were very BRUTAL to both the police and fellow citizens they THOUGHT were from mainland China. Did you not see bricks, concrete, petrol bombs, caustic liquid being thrown at police?
joyridingonthetitanic
Has anyone considered that this whole incident plays directly into China's hands, and may have been orchestrated that way deliberately? I wouldn't put it past them?
Protesters turning to direct violence and attacking police with weapons (even if they are bars) escalates the situation where they can claim that by sending in the military to restore order becomes suddenly viable?
juminRhee
18 years old...Why are people calling him a boy? He's a man.
rocketpanda
Not a clue there mate. Those so called people you think who want to be slaves were pretty happy with their lives until Lam tried bringing a law that would allow HK people to be extradited to the mainland and you know the CCP would abuse that rule to make people from HK who talk ill of the government disappear.
HK has flourished ever since the UK handed it back. They haven’t been slaves to the British empire for a very long time. Check the facts, it’s in any history book instead of your feeling.
Jimizo
What a terrible indictment of the CCP.
The Original Wing
rlperez@hotmail.com.au:
Try to misdirect the topic of my post all you like. The point still stands that the HK Police are lying and spreading propaganda in order to make themselves appear more righteous. I see that their efforts succeeded with at least one person.
Oh, well that's good evidence. But it's also a little strange, because here's what you posted yesterday in another HK-related article:
https://japantoday.com/category/world/Hong-Kong-police-slammed-as-'trigger-happy'-after-teen-shot
So wait - are we supposed to believe CNN? Or are they making false, doctored TV coverage? I'm confused. So are you, apparently. Your principles seem to hold up only as long as they suit your purpose.
Akie
"HK has flourished ever since the UK handed it back", true, it is because China flourished.
Now, look at what the pro-democratic rioters did to HK, under the black masks, act like terrorists, what kind of system is that ?
rlperez@hotmail.com.au
"happy with their lives until Lam tried bringing a law that would allow HK people to be extradited to the mainland"
So, the extradition law has been withdrawn and the riots go on. Why aren't they happy now?
Could it be that Joshua Wong and cohorts are still been funded by the NED to continue to stir up ant-Chinese sentiment?
joyridingonthetitanic
Now whose stirring up conspiracy theories?
Akie
"you know the CCP would abuse that rule to make people from HK who talk ill of the government disappear"
How judgmental. How do you know things before they even happens ? HK people are not special, they shouldn't be above laws.
Jimizo
You have pretty much nailed it. Hong Kongers will have their freedom of speech and other democratic rights trampled just like on the mainland.
It is safe to say they will not be treated differently.
Akie
Jimizo, shame on you to call the terrorism "their freedom of speech and other democratic rights". Do that to your own govt if you dare.
The Original Wing
Zichi has apparently come across some secret information that is the opposite of what seemingly every source on earth is reporting.
He is a high school student. Therefore I shall refer to him as a "schoolman" instead of "schoolboy." Thank you for your contribution to the conversation.
rlperez@hotmail.com.au
The Original Wing: "CNN are now making false, doctored TV coverage."
In this comment I was asking the commentator if he thought that CNN was doctoring their TV coverage as the coverage clearly showed the rioter attacking the office with an iron bar prior to being shot and the reporter commented to such an action by the rioter.
joyridingonthetitanic: Joshua Wong has been in the US on several occasions and has had discussion with both Congress and the CIA. For the past 4-5 years he has been groomed by the CIA and financed by NED (an instrument of the CIA). In fact, a couple of years ago Congress wanted to nominate him for the Nobel prize for peace. Do some background research into Joshua Wong and cohorts.
rlperez@hotmail.com.au
juminRhee: "18 years old...Why are people calling him a boy? He's a man."
This would not fit in with the anti-China, police brutality rhetoric; would not fit in with their narrative.
joyridingonthetitanic
Say what you like, you still cant prove it, so its still a theory!
rlperez@hotmail.com.au
joyridingonthetitanic:
Do a background check on Wong. Check whether or not Congress wanted to nominate him for the Nobel Peach prize. The history is there for those that bother to read it.
Wong has a history of agitation since the age of 14 - do some research.
Jimizo
Hong Kongers know their freedom of speech and other democratic rights will be strangled by the CCP just like in mainland China.
I know you are an apologist for the CCP and look to throw a sheet over their past atrocities, but surely you can see that the democratic rights of Hong Kong people are in danger.
You may not care about democratic rights including freedom of speech ( although you seem to enjoy unfettered access to the internet which is denied to Chinese people ), but surely you can see their point.
Kuro
1) he got shot point blank next to the heart, i'm not MD, just being careful with what i'm writting.
2) that depends a lot on the countries.
3) I hope so. Will he also have a fair trial ?
4) Was the police doing their job when they disapeared for several hours while people got beaten up by the triad ? then coming back, arresting nobody. Was the police doing their job when they started firing rubber bullets at the crowd at the beging of the movemt, when all was peaceful ? don't forget all that the police did.
Protesting is legal ? why do they keep forbidding the demonstration and firing rubber bullet and smoke bombs at the legal protests then ? why do they ignore millions of people in the streets ? in this situation, shooting him was clearly not appropriate, stop being the devil's advocate.
ulysses
Shooting someone at point blank range is an execution, he’s lucky that he survived.
And he’s 18 years old, if it makes you feel less guilty, call him a man, but the police shot an 18 year old, point blank.
Cliffy
When police hit protester with a batons and breaking their bones, it is called minimum force. When a protester hit a fully geared police with a stick, it is called life in danger.
Cliffy
^ NY times also show that they have other non-lethal means such as pepper spray and rubber bullet. And, he has already drawn the gun as he was approaching. With that close distance, even a rubber bullet or even bean bag round could do very serious damage. There is no need for a gun. I am not saying it is right to do that, but the force has to be equivalent. You cannot say it is danger to life when someone use similar weapon to attack you and yet when you hit someone with same weapon it is just minimum force.
coskuri
The "group" left their house with metal rods and went to chase a policeman that was out to get breakfast ? Or they were in the middle of a street battle with an army of armured and armed cops/soldiers pushing their group violently ? It might be they had to seize sticks and defend their safety, no ? I dunno. You dunno. We dunno.
From the minute the youths arrived ? Cutting out the context is a classic trick of propaganda. Surely violence escalated. But was it one way ?
It's a what ? A massive weapon ? You know what ? The youths in HK are really into non-violence. If I have to go on a riot, I wear my helmet, I bring my tonfa not an umbrella.
Akie
HK needs reform, HK must get rid of the outdated Colonial rules, and put people's interests first. Serve people, not criminals.
Cliffy
^ in a lot of cases, the protesters are trying to identify the police officers as they do hide their IDs now. But all these are speculation at this point. And, I suppose after police already detained a protester and yet a group of them still rush in to kick and hit him is a minimum and reasonable force as well.
Cliffy
At this point, a really independent investigation is needed in order to at least soften these hatred between police and citizens. Also, some police officers will need to be held accountable for collusion with gangsters, speculations of torture and even rape will need to be investigated. Violence will also need to be held accountable for both sides in the court of law.

Have you seen a picture of Joshua Wong? It’s not like he carries a sign that says he’s 18. He looks like a freshman in high school, but it’s not the cover that’s important. Joshua Wong has no nakami. He’s the typical Asian self hater who would rather take a half of plate of soggy fries than a full fresh bowl of steaming rice to satiate his inferiority complex. He is a Charlie wannabe, who is prepared to kiss Trump’s chocolate factory.
The media should wake up and realize that he represents no one. He is not supported by anyone. He doesn't say anything smart. He has no plan. He visits the US smiling and taking selfies with his same age friends throw away their future and receive ten year sentences and get shot in the chest. All he wants is to feel admired by the media.
It amazes me that some Asians are so willing to forgive Western grievances, I mean to the point of defending colonization and choosing to internalize the injustice, to put all the blame on their kin.
Hong Kong’s freedom is ranked 3rd in the world The US is ranked 17th.

Cliffy
Of course, they have to take their chances. All I can see is thing will not die down. It will just keep escalating and probably next time the protester will not just use hammer and wrench either. The citizen no longer see police being trust worthy, and police no longer see any citizen as human.
ClippetyClop
A hilarious and deluded, possibly state-funded joke.
You often mention this notional measurement of national success, yet no evidence exists to support it. By this measure, you're barely in the top 100.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Happiness_Report#2019_World_Happiness_Report
Nobody cares, but maybe it's about time you started leading your people instead of crushing them, like you have done for hundreds of years.
Open Minded
What is wrong in asking for universal suffrage?
I am really curious about the arguments against that.
Akie
ClippetyClop said "Nobody cares" 25% world population of their feeling, their opinions, their freedoms. That explains "A hilarious and deluded, possibly state-funded joke" of Chinese people's right as democratic rights.
If your democratic rights isn't the same as Chinese rights, then stop spreading it in China.
Well, Chinese are not happy about their new bridges, new homes, new roads, new trains, new smartphones, they are happy about your collapsed bridges, your run down homes, your broken roads, your 100 years old trains, your stupidphones.
oldman_13
I saw the video.
The student and others were dressed to attack, and the student was using a metal rod to bash a downes officer. Justifiable shooting in self defense.
theFu
I saw the video.
When is trying to beat another human legal anywhere?
Found it impressive how both sides effectively ignored people with cameras/Press labels.
The non-violent protesters should all get "press" t-shirts and take their cameras out to every event.
Cliffy
There is also video showing the protester was actually using a PVC pipe and the metal pipe was planted by the police.
https://www.facebook.com/cantonese.rfa/videos/2202921750004899/?hc_location=ufi
I guess all these will become evidence when it goes on try.
coskuri
Ah, the holy truth... I saw a video called 'full footage'. Nothing clear and cut. No clear beginning. Lots of obvious action not in the camera's angle. Not the same as yours ?
I don't think so. I saw an unclear mess, not your perfect scenario.
Around the shooting scene no less than 9 officers can be seen in a circle of less than 10 meters. They appear at some point as the camera moves. Isolated ?
I saw, at some point there was one un-equal fight (one youth in city clothes vs one warrior in full terminator gear) that becomes another un -equal fight ( several youth some with equipment and with objects vs the terminator). It's likely they all feared for their life , at different moments, the youths, the policeman. All have a survival instinct, individually and for their group. Would some have a right for self defense and others no ?
I repeat : that's not aggressive rioters but pacific demonstrators...that at worse got carried away by emotion. They are nothing like the "black blocks", intentionally aggressive choregraphies that we can sometimes see in France. I think the police are not meanies either, nothing like the infamous "death squads". The cop looks sorry to have wounded a youth. The kids ( the men, the granpas if you want), that could be the policemen's little brothers. That's not a war, that's unfortunate circumstances.
Now if Lam really wants the police to really hate the demonstrators and the demonstrators to really hate the police, she should go on and insist on blaming and punishing.
Please Akie (Abe-fujin ? ), post in your own language. I can't read Korean, that will give me a break.
Ah_so
An 18 year old boy was shot while trying to defend himself from an assualt by a heavily armed man. A disgrace - this would not happen in a civilized country.
oldman_13
Are you being serious? Videos clearly show him whacking away at a cop, what did you expect would happen. And such things happen with regularity in my 'civilized' home country, and people have been shot for far less things.
