> And, maybe you forget, for most countries they had covid sections of the hospital. Talking about prior to the pandemic is not useful.

Talking about and comparing the number of available hospital beds prior to pandemic is relevant. They have very few COVID-specific beds, and won't put COVID-positive patients in regular hospital beds, which is highly likely the reason for the overflow.

The thing is, sure, most people won't need hospital care, but a whole swathe of elderly, unvaccinated people will.

Not according to the UK, Scotland, Israel, and Canada government data. In those countries, the vaccinated are overwhelming majority of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.

You cannot hide from a pandemic.

If you have money, sure you can. It's actually quite easy.

It's the peasants that can't. You know every single person posting on this board and pretty much everyone they know.

The vax stats were low because nobody trusted the CCP puppets running HK.

This doesn't explain the demographics of vaccine hesitancy.

If you are well enough to queue outside a hospital, you don't need to be in a hospital.

If you hospitalised everyone who tested positive for flu, your health service would be in this state too. But you don't, because it isn't necessary. Neither is it with Omicron. Hospitals are for people who need medical intervention to survive, not a week off work.

The vax stats were low because nobody trusted the CCP puppets running HK.

You cannot hide from a pandemic. Dominant variants still spread globally, travelling faster than rich people did on their private jets, whilst the rest of us were in homeprisonment.

Zero-Covid is a fantasy.

-test all 7.5 million residents.

Waste of time and staff. It will just give you a statistic. Instead, use the visits to vaccinate any vulnerable person who wants a jab.

-Asia's World City.

China's Alcatraz.

That’s surely not a topic to be mixed with politics there. Do you really think the numbers would be significantly better if HK still would be 100% UK ‘owned’? lol

I do not know what you are LOL-ing about here, but the answer is yes, absolutely. For one thing, the numbers would be credible, not reflecting CCP propaganda.

And additionally, the HK government would not round up and detain people en masse for testing positive, following XiJi Pings insane "zero covid" policy.

“Commie” is such an unpleasant word. Reminds me of Daily Mail-readers and other illiterates….

Yeah, it's one of those dog whistle words used by those who want to show other right wingers that they have virtue, so they signal it to the others. It's not a word used by people who have an interest in actual political discourse, rather they just want to troll as is the MO of right-wingers nowadays.

No conspiracy theories, just miss information and unwarranted panic which the leadership did nothing to correct as they were too busy crushing the democracy movement and eradicating the few remaining freedoms they had.

Now the ordinary people of HK must die for their CCP imposed leaders inadequacy.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Sven Asai, yes.

Pukey, nope, handing back HK doesn’t conflict with a mindset invented by you but not actually relevant to the discussion. The problem lies with the incompetent and uncaring politicised government structures but that is what you get when you stuff them with “loyal” place-men uninterested in the population only there own careers.

HK is now forced to follow blindly the mainland party line regardless of local circumstances, healthcare policy is now decided by political considerations.

All vaccines in HK was specifically procured and delivered through the China / CCP, HK had no avenue to directly procure them, or were not allowed to use them. Obviously there was a little issue of trust with that.

Ironic that Pro-commies here bagging western countries, while enjoying their democratic freedom

Look at the covid stats for UK and you have your answer. It's sick to have a leader who thinks it's better to just let old folks die. That leader is still in 10 Downing Street.

There must be a story behind the low vaccination rate in Hong Kong.

I just explained it. And there were no western-style conspiracy theories.

If you're feeling fine, I guess it's about time to double down on 20 with the boosters eh?

No idea of your point. sorry. Try to say what you mean.

Ramzel:

The reason the vaccination rates are so low in HK is right there in the article.

No, the reason why so many of the elderly didn't get the vaccination was because early on during the initial rollout of the vaccine, there were a few suspicious deaths (old people) and this made other people panic. This was in the local news, but whether the western media bothers reporting this or not, I don't know. So it's not because they believed in some whacky conspiracy theories - East Asians are just a bit more sensible than westerners. However, this has also made HK very reluctant to open up and sooner or later they were going to get a big wave.

tooheysnew:

It’s been reeling since 1997

I'm sorry if the return of HK to China really conflicts with your colonial mindset, but deal with it. The British Empire is over. Even Barbados doesn't want the queen anymore. But HK has been kind enough to keep its hospitals named after members of the British royal family and the capital after Queen Vic. And here we have people fearmongering about buildings before named after Xi.

zenji:

Don't worry, your mother country will look after you: NOT !!!!!!!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the mainland is sending specialists to help out. But of course, if you limit yourself to western MSM, you won't know that.

AFP:

Authoritarian China managed to eliminate outbreaks

Notice AFP aka typical western MSM playing mind-tricks with readers again. Instead of just saying China, it has to say authoritarian China. Next time AFP does an article on America, perhaps it can say warmongering America.

COVID-wracked Hong Kong

Ridiculous headline. HK is wrecked by CCP policies, not by Covid. But I can see who controls what Su Xinqi and Dene-Hern Chen can write.

Do they just have very limited COVID-specific hospital beds which is reason for overflow? Hospitals logistically cannot make all hospital beds completely enclosed COVID-specific. Prior to pandemic, they never would not have completely enclosed beds for patients that had influenza, pneumonia, or colds.

I think very limited COVID-specific beds is why we are seeing overflow, not because COVID patients are overwhelming hospitals.

Reckless

“Sadly, the virus itself – particularly the variant called Omicron – is a type of vaccine. That is, it creates both B-cell and T-cell immunity, and it’s done a better job of getting out to the world population than we have with vaccines,” he said.

Why sadly? The human immune system is the most amazing adaptation we have.

Sure. And all vaccines do is kickstart our most amazing immune system. I guess you would have to get the context for "Sadly", but possibly he meant that it is a dangerous way to get immunity. Don't know.

The reason the vaccination rates are so low in HK is right there in the article.

they have very strict quarantines and up until now had barely any cases. Hence people saw vaccines as useless, until now.

Sure, I get that. But young people are mostly vaccinated. My question is why are old people not getting vaccinated.

Well, Bill Gates seems to think that omicron is a better vaccinator than the jabs at spreading immunity.

“Sadly, the virus itself – particularly the variant called Omicron – is a type of vaccine. That is, it creates both B-cell and T-cell immunity, and it’s done a better job of getting out to the world population than we have with vaccines,” he said.

Yeah, that's true, but for old unvaccinated, it would be a great vaccinator that could kill them. Better to catch it at that age, while vaccinated and get the double benefits of immunity and not die in the process.

The cases consist of the elderly and those with underlying conditions no doubt

Especially vulnerable are the elderly -- only 43 percent of those aged 70-79 and 27 percent of the city's above-80s have received two jabs.

This will be a disaster.

Does anyone know why these oldies are so reluctant to get the jab? Most older people around the world have jumped at the chance to get vaccinated.
