Thoughts and prayers for the people there. I hope that the factions that are constantly at each others throats can put aside their weapons and hatred of each other and work together to help the survivors.

Thousands dead. Millions suffering. Wide-scale destruction. They need urgent help.

It is a terrible disaster. If Japan wants to help, export earthquake resistant architecture and engineering.

It does, but it is very expensive and most countries cant afford it, so they build cheap buildings.

How SAD, last night it was about 600 and now it is more than 3,000! Few years back Turkey lost 17,000 people due to an earthquake. let us pray that this will not be the case

A quake of 7.8 is a monster. I remember living through a much smaller 6.2 quake. Very, very scary, and over 60 people were killed. I can't even imagine how terrible a 7.8 quake would be. If I did the calculations correctly, on a logarithmic scale, 7.8 is 50 times more powerful than 6.2. Literally unimaginable.

Shocking really, really shocking scenes. And it's not just old buildings but modern, expensive-looking multi-story apartment buildings.

It does, but it is very expensive and most countries cant afford it, so they build cheap buildings.

No, the buildings I have seen, looked very much like they could afford it. But in a terribly corrupt country with a corrupt evil leader, you can get away with it.

The innocent locals have to suffer this corruption with the destruction of their homes and with their lives.
