The damage a muzzleloader would cause would likely be much more cruel than a high velocity rifle. Large, slow bullet, never designed for a quick kill from the early years of rifles. Why did Thomas Alexander choose this weapon? All I can say, is my heart goes out. To the deer. Chalk up one for kharma.

This is why when you hunt larger animals you give a double tap and wait.

Just goes to show you, acting on your Charles Ingalls Little House on the Prairie fantasy can be lethal.

Deer, even without any injuries, will do surprising things. We can never really predict what might happen. At 66 yrs old, he should have known this by heart, especially with a buck.
He made 2 phone calls according to other reports, more than an hour apart. 1st was to say he'd shot the deer at 6:30p. 2nd was a call for help. Seems he probably did wait a good long time before approaching the buck. There isn't any way to be certain.
Officials aren't certain if he his death was caused by antler puncture wounds or if he had a heart attack. No autopsy is planned. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/animal-news/hunter-dies-arkansas-after-deer-he-shot-attacks-him-n1071631

Note to self: If you ever go deer hunting with a muzzleloader, carry a sidearm and prod downed animals with a long stick to make sure they are dead.
