A nice sentiment, but parents only have so much control of their children's actions.

A high IQ does not necessarily protect from joining an irrational belief system. I remember that a lot of the Aum/Aleph followers were/are also intellectuals.

I am surprised though that the father did not discuss the issue with him. If the kid was brought up an atheist, he surely should be familiar with arguments for and against religionism? Or the did the father simply not address the issue?

'I am responsible,' says grieving father of Australian IS suicide bomber

John Bilardi isn't fully responsible for the radicalization of his son! His only crime was that he lost touch with his son.

The people who preyed on his son's naivety are the true criminals and they are religious predators who hunt for stupid youthful fools who can easily be swayed into their insanity thus falling into their sickness.

These people who prey on the mindless youth are just as bad as the other gangs or groomers who brainwashed all those you girls and boys into becoming sex slaves.

If the world wants to end these grooming gangs the world will need to treat these religious sexual groomers with the same disdain that they hold all other groomers! Religious Sexual slavery groomers are just as bad as internet groomers!

ISIS's supporters need to be treated as badly as any other psycho! They prey on mindless kids and need to pay for their crime!!!

You may dislike the Daily Mail, but their evidence can't be disproved!

Children are being sexually abused, groomed and being brainwashed to join ISIS to serve their needs.

The West needs to wtfu and start sending the folks that prey on these children away for a long time. Or maybe doing the right thing and deporting the hell out of the West!!!!!!!

Why does the West continue to protect these people who prey on children because of their radical religious beliefs.

How can anyone defend an adult male's right to marry an 6-8 year old child? Or even worse how can anyone defend an adult to marry more than one 6-8 year old children??????

What kind of human would ever think of marrying a child? And even sicker, what kind of human would ever try and defend these insane people;s right to marry CHILDREN????

The problem is that a) Mohammed is considered the "perfect man", to be emulated in every way and b) that this outrageous doctrine is protected in the West under religious freedom".

So, in effect, the Western countries have dug their own grave with our noble but completely misguided concept of "religious freedom".

Feel really sorry for the family here. Kids always go through a rebellion stage before settling down into something more stable. They'll never get this chance. their son's rebellious choice shouldn't have even been an option in a sane world. As I said, I feel sorry for them.

Hmm.... raised atheist. Wow! Did he ever fill that spiritual void with a twisted ideology. Quite iconic of the present human condition.

" he felt “totally responsible” for failing to see that his son needed help."

This may sound extreme (like blowing people up isn't?) but we really need to treat Jihadism as a mental illness, a dangerous one at that where the afflicted pose a serious danger to themselves and others. People who become afflicted by Jahadism need help. After they are removed from society for safety reasons.

What the heck is a "spiritual void"? A thinking person does not need religious claptrap to fill any "void". I am proud to say that I did not indoctrinate my children with any religious doctrine. But I made a point of talking with them about the big questions that various religions try to answer with made-up stuff..... the meaning of life, morality, mortality, and all that. We have been through the religious (non) arguments many times. I am quite confident that they don´t fall for "salvation", of the Jihadist or any other kind.

I disagree with the idea that you need to indoctrinate kids with one set of of stupid ideas in order to protect them from another set of even stupider ideas.

Ever notice these stupid idiots leave their countries to become suicide bombers or on the front lines of war. Besides Jihadi John, who is only used as a spokesperson to get foreigners to come, the rest of them become sacrificial lambs.

What exactly is a "spiritual void"? Can you define the concept?

Spiritual void usually is what happens to people that don't feel satisfied with at least one aspect of their life. We still have people that join cults, commit suicide, or use drugs even if they're wealthy, intelligent, and have good family or companionship.

An atheist said something really interesting of a comparison between religious and non-religious charitable organizations, "We have the ability to help heal diseases, and the body, but we do not have anything to offer that can help heal the human heart."

Call it a soul, spirit, or what have you, but for some reason, people that have it all can still feel empty inside. Raises some questions about "soul-searching". Sadly this young man's heart didn't appear to have any strength to cling to something good, so he jumped on the Islamist bandwagon.
