What is happening India could happen any where if you let your guards down, India leaders ignored the early warning and declared victory over the virus to win the election, they put politics before people lives, I hope they will lose the election and get kicked out office and prosecuted.

To those who have been saying this is all fake, that it is no worse than the flu, that it is a world wide conspiracy,

“The virus is swallowing our city’s people like a monster,” said Mamtesh Sharma, an official at the site.

“We are just burning bodies as they arrive,” said Sharma. “It is as if we are in the middle of a war.”

The situation is equally grim at unbearably full hospitals, where desperate people are dying in line, sometimes on the roads outside, waiting to see doctors.

This is real and those who do nothing, take no precautions in the mistaken belief it is all a fake, take note of India who just a few short weeks ago believed it was past the worst, and acted like it.

I hope they manage to get it under control asap and that deaths can somehow be minimized.

Twitter should be ashamed of itself, taking sides in a political dispute, and blocking the tweets of journalists and opposition politicians.

And for someone who declared victory in January, this disaster may be karma for Mr. Modi.

Reckless

Well, I hate to admit it, but you are not seeing this terrible situation in China. I hope India can pull through quickly with vaccinations.

What you are seeing in China is controlled by the CCP. The sensationalist headlines from India are very much a result of having less media control.

Pukey2:

China is indeed not completely closed off as North Korea is. I do agree with you that if something like this had happened in China, we might have heard about it.

However, you cannot deny that information in China is censored and controlled by the CCP

The Chinese authorities have locked up one million Uyghurs in 'reeducation camps' and not a single Chinese media ever reported this fact. It took YEARS for the outside world to know about that situation.

If countries with a free press (the U.S., Japan, India...) locked up one million of their citizens in concentration camps, the information would be out within weeks, if not DAYS.

By the way, being critical of the Chinese communist party is NOT sinophobia, just like being anti-Nazi is not being anti-German.

This is what happens when the hospitals are overwhelmed. The people suffer in ghastly ways, both the struggling patients and their desperate relatives.

I agree. Modi to a page from the Trump playbook in order to appear "strong" and ignore science. Now the results are on display for all to see.

It didn't have to be that way. Serum Institute of India is the world's largest vaccine-producing company in the world's largest vaccine-producing nation. India has more tools and resources to combat covid than most countries. Political Policy matters and can save or cost lives.

"current PM Modi has so far failed"

Not for lack of trying. Tells you a lot if he spends so much on his IT brigade but still fails to convince everyone except for a few of his die hard bhakts who lap up all his propaganda.

Yet another of his failures.

@Mark

Indeed. When Modi and his cronies will be taken out of office, I hope they will be prosecuted and then jailed for their negligence. They can rot in hell.

It is true India is underreporting death from the beginning. The estimated death numbers are between 3.5 to 5.2 times than the reported ones. It is also true India does not have a proper death counting mechanism even in normal circumstances. Many poor people in the rural parts are dying unnoticed. The situation is really dire. The second wave is clearly mismanagement. Probably, the incompetence of Mr. Modi is adding fuel to it.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

It is a good thing that Hindu's cremate the dead, otherwise India would have run out of land.

Every cloud has a silver lining. Hope the dumb-bhakts slowly start waking up to Modi's hypocrisy and realize that all that bombastic rhetoric about making India a world leader was false, and all that he cares about is winning the next election. Allowing Kumbh Mela to go ahead and conducting political rallies attended by millions without mask or social distancing was just another ploy of firing up his support base. When they or their family members are down or struggling for their lives the only gods that will save them are the ones wearing surgical gowns in hospitals.

China is not completely closed off like North Korea. If anything remotely like this were happening there would be absolutely no way of stopping this news from getting out of China. Please, enough of your Sinophobia. I know there are some people who would love to see numbers shoot through the roof in China and are disappointed it's not happening.

1 ( +8 / -7 )

Utterly tragic. Life isn't worth much for most in India. We know they've been under-reporting the deaths from the beginning but I'm guessing this is the tip of the iceberg. Horrible

The great firewall of China is not a joke. It’s real and highly effective. Not only that but China has co-opted the West to support their misinformation campaign. Big money opportunities for the NBA has superstars like LaBron James parroting CCP “see no genocide” propaganda at the exact time he is condemning America as systemically racist- an anti-factual lie based on a Orwellian anti-racism ideology that is itself steeped in the racist notion that whiteness is oppression.

"and other political parties spend far more"

Are you sure about that?

You are just sore that BJP is unable to hide its mismanagement of COVID in front of the entire world with their rhetoric of 'pharmacy of the world' and are now being revealed for the buffoons that they actually are.

India is what happens when there's runaway spread of the virus

It's a cautionary tale of letting the virus run free spreading

A lot of people die when the virus is not under control

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@KaFKa India doesn't have free press.

Not for lack of trying..

Nope..there is no media management.. had there being one.. this AP article would not have published and if published would have been very different than the subtle Santana Dharma hate narrative which is very evident. Every political party has these IT brigades..and other political parties spend far more..as they are funded very well by the Modi haters.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Are you sure about that..

100%..otherwise as I said, this AP article would not have been published..and if published would have been published with a very different narrative.

Well 30-35% deaths are not in the Hindu population.. so what land problems were you taking about ?

There is another festival which started during Kumbh Mela, how come you forgot to mention that..I assume you also mean there families and there gods, right..

Yep, that's the thing.. India unlike China does not do Media Management, and hence has a image problem..this is one area where the current PM Modi has so far failed.. every country in some way or other does manage the Media.. India does not.. and hence faces a daily onslaught of narrative based disinformation a.k.a fake news..

Only those into conspiracy stuff are saying that, this is as real as it gets.. as for the "The virus is swallowing our city’s people like a monster,"It is as if we are in the middle of a war." The deaths in the the US are 3 times more than that of India.. I have not seen such description for any US city.. now that's the subtle hate narrative.. this gullible Mamtesh Sharma off-course has no idea as to how his statement will be twisted to line-up with the narrative.

This is real and those who do nothing, take no precautions in the mistaken belief it is all a fake, take note of India who just a few short weeks ago believed it was past the worst, and acted like it.

Post Wave1 Modi handed over the COVID management to the states and this is where the states were found wanting..now he is again re-asserting control..

Hindus what? Hint: not the possessive case...

I cannot help to wonder if there is possibly and underlying genetic issue for this.
