An amazing achievement by India.

In Buddhism, India is known as the 'land of the moon' and Japan is the 'land of the sun'.

So it had to happen that one day an Indian spacecraft would land on the moon.

As for the comments that 'India being a poor third world country should get its priorities right' that will soon come along, the mission cost only 75 million USD, less than the budget of a Hollywood movie.

So India is more technologically advanced than Russia. No surprise there.

The live video was just of moon craters. The part showing the lander was for engineering purposes, with a 2-second latency for when the attitude control engines fired. It was for engineering visual representation.

Compared to the way India did launches a few years ago, the graphics was great. I wasn't worried that the raw data was lying. Loved the way they hovered for 10 sec at ~150m. That was impressive and showed good control.

Modi has just won a third term for himself.

But good that he did not steal all the limelight like he usually does and gave credit to the ISRO scientists and pioneers who made it possible.

And also thanks to NASA and ESA for providing tracking support to ISRO.

The mission shows both the strengths and weaknesses of India's space program.

Strengths being that India can do things cheaply, and no doubt its also an attempt to win business for any future planned unmanned missions to the moon by private entities or other countries.

Weakness being that Indian rockets are not powerful enough to carry heavy or super heavy payloads so ISRO has to employ some 'jugaad' by placing payloads in orbit and then gradually raising orbit to slingshot the payloads towards the moon.

It was inevitrable. They've been sending robot probes to impact the Moon just others before have done since the early - mid '60s. The next step is 'soft landings; by robot landers. Now India has thrown their hat into the lunar exploration ring and they've joined the community. Welcome to the club, India!

I do not know if this was a great achievement or what, I don't really care that much. But what is mans fascination with landing on the moon, am I missing something here? ps.....did anyone else notice that in the bottom picture it was all men cheering. Perhaps other women like me around the world are of my thoughts.

It was. It's extremely hard to break free of the gravity of earth, particularly with living things on board, and then to additionally land on an extraterrestrial mass... it's an amazing achievement of humanity.

Elon Musk is fascinated with colonizing Mars. The moon could be a better option.. since it has water. If not an option, it could give a lot of answers, which mankind would need when they move somewhere else, when Earth is no longer inhabitable

As for the men cheering.. if you look at their live video, you can see a lot of women scientists at ISRO. Scroll through this video and you will see a pretty good number of them.
