Hope India will control it but situation is worrisome. Infections are increasingly rapidly with no bending of the curve in sight at the moment and millions of people out of work.

Well, at least Trump supporters can still cheer they are number one.

The 90,802 cases added in the past 24 hours pushed India’s total past Brazil with 4.2 million cases. India is now only behind the United States, which has more than 6 million. India’s Health Ministry on Monday also reported 1,016 deaths for a total of 71,642, the third-highest national toll.

Completely meaningless figures. "Cases" means nothing, as counting is unreliable and most cases are harmless anyway. And comparing countries of completely different population sizes is meaningless right off the bat.

This article fails to mention the 98%+ recovery rate, a bit more than 98% of these 90,802 will be in the recovered list in 10-12 days..

With the Olympics cancelled, the way the number tallies are shown in some media is almost like a contest to be first place.

Cases? So? There’s cases of everything

Authoritarian governments worldwide seem not to be handling the pandemic very well. Brazil, the US, Israel, India, Africa and the ME...

How about the death toll? Don’t care about that either?

How about the death toll? Don’t care about that either?

The death toll figures are still changing world-wide, but gradually stabilizing. Sweden has had practically no new deaths since July. Other countries, which took the painfull lock-down approach and prolonged Corona, are gradually getting close to the Swedish figure.

What do you recommend then?

Oh, more figures. That figures.

But Sweden is ok to use in comparison to every other country on the planet. Ok gotcha.

India has 4 times more people than the U.S. Raw amounts count for little for a comparison. Its rates that count.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Oh no. Anyway...

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

India enforced a strict lockdown when the cases were not many, but their pathetic government forgot that daily wagers would starve to death without work, so they are now opening back up to avoid further economic damage even though the daily count is growing.

This is just the official case count. In rural areas healthcare is patchy at best and non-existent mostly, suffice to say that though the virus originated in China it is countries like India which have their public healthcare in shambles which will suffer the most.

The only saving grace for the country is their relatively young population due to which death toll is still low as a percentage.

Figures per million, as opposed to raw figures, the way the press likes to do. Your point?

Keep moving those goalposts. You might score yet.

I have Aussie friends who have been trying to get out of India for the past three months with no luck. They have been living in hotels and spending a fortune. Their teaching jobs are defunct and are living on savings only. The Australian government is doing nothing to help them. Even if they do finally get out of India they will have to pay $2-3,000 for mandatory quarantine in a hotel in Australia. It’s quite disturbing to see people make light of the situation in India.

With this rate India will surpass US in 4 weeks, this doesn’t just impact India but as a country with largest no of immigrants living in almost every country of the world will effect the entire world one way or another, if the world forces a strict entry ban on Indian immigrants they have a HR issue, if they don’t they might let corona spread.

I hope it gets under control

I’ve never seen nuance take such a beating in just six words.

But no surprise, sadly.

Death toll is 70% over 70 or very sick people. Or poor malnourished people.

its like entering the sea with waves and rips and jellyfish, but you can’t swim.

look after the elderly and teach the kids to swim.

@Vanessa yes India's population is 4 times that of usa so one 2 one comparison may not be accurate in some cases but please note that usa has conducted 8 times more test as compare to India.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

The worlds third biggest population, having the 2nd biggest total.

Hardly surprising

Deaths per million in India is 52, so extremely low. The article is much ado about nothing.

The problem, as in so many places, is government overreaction.

Any reason to attack Trump is good enough reason to make light of the pandemic and the human misery it has caused.

These kinda of comments burn me up! Perhaps your opinion would change if it were you or one of your family in intensive care on a ventilator in hospital.

I said the article is much ado about nothing, making a story out of numbers that do not justify it. I did not say the disease is nothing. It is certainly something if you are weak and have co-morbidities. The use of ventilators, by the way, is discouraged now, as they cause more damage than help.

And yet India still buys china products and china sports/media sponsorships of Indians.......instead of blaming the china-nese for causing so much death and misery by lying & hiding details about the Wuhan virus.

Yes, Indians have taken some efforts to ban chinese products but not enough.

With over 1 billion people more than the US, as well as a much poorer population, and much worse sanitation facilities, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if India leapfrogged the US unfortunately. I remember somebody talked about this a couple months ago, when India’s cases weren’t that bad. And I thought that made perfect sense, considering all the factors I just mentioned. Now we’re seeing his argument become reality.

That burns me up too. Trump has said stupid things like that. Problem is, India has over one billion people in population and one can only wonder if its government and society is as moronic and stupid as the criminal regime ruling America.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

India does not have a proper death counting mechanism in all places. It is estimated that the death count is 3-5.2 times higher than what is reporting.
