Oh that poor woman, and her poor friend. What they have suffered. This is a dreadful ending to a dreadful story. Even the eventual punishment of those involved surely cannot make anyone feel better.

The 23-year-old victim “died peacefully,” according to a statement by Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth hospital where she was being treated.

Say what?

Terrible. My she rest in peace.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

people in India are being raped with impunity with the police ignoring the victims. I remember a case of a tourist in India who was gang raped in front of the hotel she was staying just few years back. In broad daylight.

Rape is rape Zichi, no high level or low level, and unfortunately many cases everyday go unnoticed!! This crime comes with humanity and will be there until we get extinct. I hope every country should have severe punishment for this crime. I agree with you, these culprits should be hanged so we have a severe example!! RIP girl

SHAME ---------- there are no laws entrenched to protect the rights of women regarding "rape"..........................LAST YEAR IN India, only 1 man in all of India was charged for rape.------------------------- Ghandhi ,when he ushered in independance from Britsih rule, envisioned a Nation that promoted EQUITY for ALL . . . . . . . . .but women are still considered property and objects ............................................May this young woman find rest and healing in the loving arms of God.

India needs to learn how to deal with rape cases like they do over in Saudi Arabia, Iran, etc...they drag your sorry ass out into a public place lie a soccer, my guess India a cricket stadium, and yes, chop your perverted head off. Time for Indians to show their police how it is done, good old Salvadoran style machete to the necks of these scum rapists in India will bring back peace and tranquility real soon, no need for the NRA in India.

Proves can't depend on powers & authorities. Depend on self-defense. Dress against titillation. Don't display charms to sundry. Don't let faculties be blunted by medication & alcohol except in safe environment. List goes on depending on how safe you want to be / how much you dare to risk. Finally hope for good luck.

The Evil that some MEN do. Such a tragic event for this poor young lady and her friend. A terrible way to die. I hope they continue to demonstrate heavily in India and something concrete comes out as a result of this.

I've told my female family and friends many many times forget about going to India. Apparently many do not know just how much rape and corruption exists in that country. It is beyond imagination.

I hope those that rape and commit such horrific crimes get death in the same fashion. They deserve absolutely no mercy and are the lowest form of scum. RIP young brave lady.

This one is screaming for some karma payback to those who assaulted this woman. As for the rest of India, the pots started to boil over and now its going to explode.

zichi :------ @Elbuda Mexicano - - -- "In Saudi and many other Islamic countries, when a woman is raped, she's the one charged with a crime and punished". I was just going to say . . . .EXACTLY . . . .There are endless reports by Amnesty International and other Human Rights Groups of families from those countries who -- with impunity - - murder their wives, daughetrs, sisters and mothers for alleged sexual misconduct .. ...................These are calleed 'Honor Killings'.

"The 23-year-old victim “died peacefully,” "

WHAT???? She died a very agonizing death after a highly brutal assault!

She may have peace now, but her death was horrible. May her assailants suffer equally painful and brutal deaths, but more slowly and unmedicated.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

We can only hope she didn't die in vain and this horrible crime results in changes in how Indian authorities treat rape victims.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Such massive lawlessness and disregard for women is deeply embedded in a society like that. Political speeches won't go very far.

India is an incredibly corrupt country. Sadly, this isn't going to change anytime soon.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Or, you know, men could not gang rape women and girls (or other men for that matter), and society and government could take responsibility for that. But no, all you have is things women could do to possibly avoid being attacked, because clearly clearly a woman is inviting rape on herself by 'dressing with titillation' and 'displaying charms to sundry'.

Finally hope for good luck.

Yeah, fingers crossed that women can walk out of their doors one day and there won't be a rapist outside (though with India's laws on marital rape and its backwards view of rape as an honour crime rather than a violation of rights, it's not like they're that much safer indoors).

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Dress against titillation. Don't display charms to sundry. Don't let faculties be blunted by medication & alcohol except in safe environment.

None of which apply to the above victim, what do you have to say now?

8 ( +8 / -0 )

It's like these Indian guys sit around thinking "how can we make this horrible place even worse?" And what was the bus driver doing while the woman was being gang raped? Making sure they stayed behind yellow line? But we shouldn't judge. We need to be open minded and respectful toward other cultures and their gang raping traditions.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Women only coaches on trains, women only buses, refusal to take statements from victims, accusing victims of dressing to stimulate and encourage the men. Do these sound familiar?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

And what was the bus driver doing while the woman was being gang raped? Making sure they stayed behind yellow line?

Oh, you'd be surprised and appalled at how useless bystanders can be when violent crime is being committed in front of them, or indeed anything that might expose them to personal risk. When in situations like that, a lot of people just won't act, however strongly they abhor the act. It certainly doesn't help that India - like practically everywhere in the world, to greater or lesser extents - has a rape culture that condones and justifies attacks on women. It's one thing among many that ensures that the driver would not be stirred to intervene.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Personally, I think those men deserve nothing less than death.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

I have been to Singapore and India many times. Singapore law and order is touch. India law and order is weak. Many Indian background of Singapore Women can walk alone on the road at midnight. They are free as birds and no one dare to harass or rape them. It is time for India to stand up and getting touch for the criminals. Minimum punishment should be hanging the criminal in public place. It is the meaningful way of the civilized society response to criminals.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Shame on these men for such a cowardly and ferocious attack, and shame on men anywhere who perpetrate violence against women. My heart goes out to this young woman and her family.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

"...civilised society...." Ha!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

...civilised society...." Ha!

Civilized society does not pamper criminals with fine food, free Gym, wasteful education and drinks. They will not let murder or rapist to walk free as excuse of mental illness. If someone commit the crime and the evidence is valid, he or she should be punished for the future deterrence.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

They will not let murder or rapist to walk free as excuse of mental illness.

If somebody kills while they are mentally ill and cannot be held responsible for their actions then they're not guilty of murder and therefore not "murderers". It's really not difficult.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

If somebody kills while they are mentally ill and cannot be held responsible for their actions then they're not guilty of murder and therefore not "murderers". It's really not difficult.

Mental Illness means someone can kill countless people without the guilty verdict . Under Aged can kill someone without the charge. It is the root cause of uncontrollable crime rate in the west. However that excuse will not work in East. In the east, public safety is more important than individual rights. Mental patient has rights to be protected however they have no license of freedom to kill or rape someone else. The world is not owned by them.

"The men also beat the couple and inserted an iron rod into the woman’s body, resulting in severe organ damage."

To prevent pregnancy... pretty merciless attack.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I had no idea that rape was so endemic in India, while at the same time being so widely ignored by the authorities. It is absolutely appalling and disgraceful that the world's largest 'democracy' can allow such heinous crimes to go unpunished! If this particularly barbaric case does not evoke some kind of change in how these crimes are investigated and prosecuted, I fear that they will continue for generations to come.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Millions of poor lower casts women are being raped and killed in India every year. but NOTHING is being reported...

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Rape is rape Zichi, no high level or low level,

I think he means high levels numerically speaking.

Proves can't depend on powers & authorities. Depend on self-defense. Dress against titillation. Don't display charms to sundry. -mods, why is this comment still here? Offensive doesn't even come close. It is precisely this victim-blaming that lets men get away with violence.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Rest in Peace to the poor innocent woman.

Maybe this tragedy will be the impetus for Indians to start respecting females as humans. It is the world's most dangerous place to be a woman - FACT. They may well claim "this is our culture- stop interfering"- but I am certain many foreigners will be reluctant to travel or do business with Indians until they update their stone-age culture. The contempt in which they hold females is a disgrace, millions of girls are killed every year as Indian families see them as a burden and less than human. It is to be hoped all the cowards involved in this outrage are executed.

The bus had been stolen or taken over by joyriders, I heard today. The couple realized it when the bus went off it's regular route.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Sad, and very sick as well. I am ashamed to admit that when I read the prognosis yesterday I figured I'd be reading this result today. I feel so sorry for this young woman. I am all for strengthening laws to protect people, man or woman, and to increase punishments -- especially since some nations (ie. in Africa for example) are threatening women with up to six months prison time for wearing 'rape provoking' mini-skirts!

I will say, though, that the death penalty is not the answer for anything, and certainly not for rape. That this young woman ended up dying as a result of the rape puts the crime up to manslaughter, for sure, and then you might have an argument for the death penalty, but for the crime of rape, no.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Well. Now it's murder. Let justice be done to the fullest extent permitted by law.

Ultimately this sort of reasoning leads nowhere. You can tell women to take all conceivable precautions, but none of it will make a difference if they end up at the wrong place at the wrong time. Modestly dressed women get raped, sober women get raped, ugly women get raped, old ladies get raped, little girls get raped. (Little boys too, for that matter). Usually by friends or acquaintances - people they know and trust - rather than strangers hiding in the bushes (or on buses, as the case may be). You could build a society where women are covered from head to toe and aren't allowed in the presence of males unless accompanied by a male guardian (some have done exactly that), and what do you end up with? Women raped in their homes by husbands, uncles, cousins, etc... So, yes, tell your daughters to be alert, and to watch their drinks, and not to go out alone too late at night or to the bad part of town. But ultimately, the blame - and the solution - has to lie with the rapist, and with the society that has failed properly deal with the problem. Let's make a serious attempt to deal with street harassment, date rape, and gender inequality. Let's teach our children to respect personal autonomy and value consent. Then maybe this sort of story will not be so commonplace.

Elbuda Mexicano:

" India needs to learn how to deal with rape cases like they do over in Saudi Arabia, Iran "

Really now. Under islamic law, first of all the rape victim is blamed; to prove rape in the first place, she needs to produce 4 male witnesses to testify that it occured at all. Is that really your idea of improving the situation in India??

2 ( +3 / -1 )

If someone commit the crime and the evidence is valid, he or she should be punished for the future deterrence.

And ignore the human rights activists? China executes their criminals and they get flack everywhere for capital punishment.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Dear Mr Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, is death penalty to the rapists awaiting until your daughters, nieces, granddaughters and grandnieces raped one by one? Considering India is historically important country in the world, treating their women that way.. Shame on you, India...!

seems whole nation is in sorrows and mouring her departure, RIP. Her death will not go in vain, will bring new safe era for women in India (hopefully).

Human rights is not relevant for criminals. If someone has committed such a horrific crime like that in China or Singapore or Cambodia or Iran or Many S E Asian nations, the most likely reward will be capital punishment. It is the way of managing public safety and order. Those nations are not perfect. However they concern more about general public rather than individual rights.

Even Japan has been reintroducing the capital punishment right now. It was a wise move. If those nations will pamper and release the criminals with mercy, there will be many and many of rape and murder cases will be sky rocketed in the future. It is the law and order of United States of Asia for getting touch with criminals. Not kissing their boots!

name is unknown at this time:

The Times of India (TOI) penned her the name "NIRBHAYA" (fearless) and others penned "Damini" (an apparent reference to the lead character in an eponymous 1993 Bollywood movie. In the movie, Damini fights for justice on behalf of a maid who was sexually abused by Damini’s brother-in-law). Fighting with great fortitude and courage after sustaining grievous injuries, the 23-year-old gangrape victim had expressed her intention to live and wanted her tormentors to be brought to justice.

"I want to live," the girl had told her brother and mother when they first met her on December 19, three days after she was brutally gangraped and assaulted in a moving bus in south Delhi.

During the entire process of her treatment, the girl remained communicative through signs most of the time, spoke to her parents and gave statements to a magistrate not once but twice.

The paramedical student was courageous and brave throughout the treatment period and even expressed some thoughts about her future when psychiatrists assessed her thrice during her 10-day treatment at the Safdarjung Hospital.

She also gave a "brave statement" to a Sub-Divisional Magistrate on December 21 in which she gave details about the incident and the sequence of events which was also corroborated with the statement given by her male friend who was with her in the bus.

Ok, not too sure what they do in Saudi Arabia, but the chopping off the heads of rapists to me sounds real cool! Forget about Saudi, ok? Just start chopping off the heads of all of these evil rapists ASAP, or get more creative, like we do in Mexico, beat the hell out of them in public, and with a little bit of Pemex gasoline, a match, presto magico, you burn the scum rapists to death hopefully while still somewhat alive, and the next potential rapists kind of get the message, IMHO.

The bus had been stolen or taken over by joyriders, I heard today. The couple realized it when the bus went off it's regular route.

The person driving the bus (and his brother) were among those arrested for the crime.

The old saying do unto others as you would have done to you ....reverse this and call up the "biggest" method of punishment inside a prison .

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Extremely sad to read this. May her soul rest in peace and her attackers get no rest.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I think that every country should follow Elbuda's suggestion.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

get more creative, like we do in Mexico, beat the hell out of them in public, and with a little bit of Pemex gasoline, a match, presto magico.....

Mexico does have a terrifying reputation as a place where brutality and gruesome murders take place daily. It's almost like descending into hell.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Could we all please stop with the graphic and gruesome depictions of what we'd like to do to these bastards? The proper response to vicious crime is justice, not revenge fantasies. The latter will do no good for the family of this young woman, and only contributes to further violence. It does nothing to address the wider issue. Making sure that these people face trial, are held accountable for their crime, and sentenced will be the vindication that this family needs, and ultimately the legal precedent and sense of moral victory will help the people of India far more than token retribution.

You can't execute away rape culture in India. The crimes that this young woman and others face will not end with gruesome murder visited on these men. Execution never works as a deterrent; heavier policing, a vigilant and morally strong society, and a supportive justice system and society will.
