He obviously struck a nerve - and he's right. The smoke from burning these fields that blankets Malaysia and Singapore every year and causes severe respiratory problems drifts up from Indonesia, which is also infamous for allowing the clear cutting of primeval forests that results in ongoing environmental damage such as loss of habitat for endangered species on a massive scale. Indonesia is also the world's third-largest producer of greenhouse gasses. Am I blacklisted yet?

Heru Santoso, the spokesman for the Directorate General for Immigration at the Law and Human Rights Ministry, says Saturday that DiCaprio used his visit to discredit the palm oil industry and the Indonesian government.

Law and Human Rights? Seriously? Did I percieve a threat from Santoso who used the term "WE' to reinforce his intentions?

Palm oil industry has destroyed ~10 million hectares in Indonesia and is threatening both species of orangutans, tigers, etc, etc. It's well known as one of the worse ongoing environmental catastrophes this century.

Do the consumers have any blame here? Indonesia is not a wealthy industrialized nation, what are they to do for income?

Does DiCaprio live a 'green minimal footprint' lifestyle? Who is he to tell others to do so?

DiCaprio should take a look at Malaysia too! Vast swathes of the country planted with them-not a monkey in sight!

What is palm oil? what for it is used?

toshiko: It is mainly a food ingredient but also used for many other products. If you check an ingredient list , it is probably there.

Would be lose-lose for Indonesia, and while it would mean DiCaprio couldn't go there anymore, that might not be any loss to him at all; and it would only strengthen his voice against them and highlight what they're doing even more.
