Sharia Law is repugnant and the international community must stand up against it.

The punishment is different, but several areas of the (freedom loving) United States also have similar laws on sodomy, which target homosexual behind the banner of "upholding Christian values". Much in the same way these folks try to uphold "Islamic values".
Same $%!*, different pile.

Such an anal government!

Some of them will probably enjoy that.

"The law is to safeguard human dignity"
Living under this Bronze Age nonsense is about as undignified as it gets. Grow up and read proper books.
Laguna
This is at least something many GOPers in the US could get behind.
Xenjy
This is so repressive it is ridiculous. but at least they pay pure gold as a substitute for caning... terrible.

"The rule applies to all Muslims"
Can you renounce your Muslim faith if you want?

@Jimizo. You've lived in TX. Of course they'd head back to Aceh, they aren't wanted nor welcomed there or anywhere near TX.

The irony is not lost on me... In extreme cases around the world, the Christians and Muslims hate each other so much, yet they share the same intolerance for people that do not share their beliefs.
It's despicable that one human being would cane another over something that is none of their business.

Isn't it great that governments and religions think they have the power to tell adults what they can and should do in their bedrooms?
John Michael White
Good idea. Letting them off easy though.

'Isn't it great that governments and religions think they have the power to tell adults what they can and should do in their bedrooms?'
I remember one writer compared organised religion's unhealthy obsession with sex with eating disorders - it's only the anorexic and the obese who are obsessed with food. I used to think the religious were anorexic but these days I'm not so sure. There is something else at work here....

I truly believe that homosexuality is not what God intended. However I don't believe that homosexual acts are anything that should be criminalised.
In Indonesia's case, given their demographics, if anything a few more gay people in their society may not be a bad thing to reduce population growth.

They are either perverts or totalitarians. Or both.
Noble713
The real question is, who (and why) are the Peeping Toms catching homosexuals in the act?
JeffLee
That simply isn't true. The Supreme Court invalided all the state sodomy laws a while back. And even before then, the old laws were hardly ever enforced.
But, hey, don't let the facts get in the way in your attempt to concoct that tired old "Western hypocrisy" narrative. LOL. You're certainly not the first person on this board to do that.

So you're trying to say "Christians or the laws and values" of Christians calls for caning? Please explain to me how they're similar to Islamic Sharia law. Gay Marriage is the law of the land in the US, show me an Islamic country that would do the same.
Jimizo
@Bass You do admit that gay marriage is the law of the land despite the best efforts of many Christians to stop it? Thankfully, America is country ruled by secular and not religious law. I'm sure you're also aware that many on the Christian Right do their utmost to blur the boundaries between church and state.
You're lucky to live in a country founded by progressive secularists.

Yes, as pointed out, the US federal government doesn't mandate it, but it still exists on state books.
My point is that religious zealots hide behind "Christian values" or "Islamic values" to put forth whatever agenda they want. Sharia law fundamentalists don't speak for all Muslims, just like those in the US who try to keep gay marriage and sex between consenting adults illegal don't speak for all Christians.Madverts
Damned straight. Ted Haggard would get right behind it. Although Larry Craig's wide stance could involve him too.
Well the hell is wrong with people?
