The article clearly states the Reaper was in international airspace.

No, the article clearly states:

A U.S. official said that an Iranian surface-to-air missile shot down the drone flying in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz.

and

Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard ... said it shot down the drone Thursday morning when it entered Iranian airspace near the Kouhmobarak district in southern Iran's Hormozgan province.

They have a right to if it was over their air-space. Bolton must be drooling right now, though.

I bet they sent the drone into Iranian air-space specifically to get Iran to attack. They are itching for a war.

Do Americans feel a draft coming?

The last thing the world needs is an escalation of things between the US and Iran. Iran is not a country anyone would just push over, should things get hot, be assured this is going to be protracted. Iran ( Persians) have been around they are as old as the hills, they have seen them ALL come and go, the likes of Assyrians, Genghis Khan, Alexander the Greek, the Brits among others. Their topography is hell and their social fabric renders them tolerant to extreme collective pain.

The US might want to consider how they'd leave other areas exposed should they engage Iran in a war. That exposure might not only be a death Knell to other small countries in its ambit but to Pax Americana itself. We just might be watching the Romans of a different time and place. The pangs of a new world dispensation?

@ Chip Star

This article clearly states that the Reaper was in international airspace, but other articles elsewhere state that it was over Hormuzgan province. Anonymous US officials aren't renowned for their accuracy (honesty).

Go to war after shooting down a drone? Sounds pretty silly. I doubt it.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

The United States is like that school bully that keeps pushing you, tripping you as you walk, throwing stuff at you, and doing everything they can do to provoke you to hit them, so they can then proceed to beat the crap out of you. If i was Iran, i would be moving as fast as i can to get a nuclear weapon. That's the only way to protect yourself from a vicious bully who is out there to get you.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

@darknuts.... no they won't deny it. Denying it would not help their case in attacking Iran. They'll say... yeah, we were trying to get intel after Iran attacked the tanker.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Trump will probably write a condolence letter to the family of the drone pilot.

If only Pompeo and the State Department were this upset when Saudi Arabia killed a journalist in their embassy in Turkey.

Francis Gary Powers' U-2 was shot down in international airspace in the vicinity of Sverdlovsk, Russia, in 1960.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

Raw, Kitty, & Smith: I stand corrected. Appreciate the call out.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Release the radar logs - some radar somewhere must had been tracking it

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Probably the same drone that attacked the tankers.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

I don't blame them for shooting down this drone . The USA would do the same if another country breached its airspace in such an aggressive act .

The USA is completely responsible for this mess after withdrawing from the Nuclear agreement with Iran . Donald Trump has proven the USA cannot be trusted to honor its agreements from one administration to another and that will have repercussion for decades after Trump has left office .

I am sure Trump will get his war with Iran but it may not go the way he expects and it is young American soldiers that will pay the price for his duplicity and hubris .

downed a $130 spy drone

You might want to check the cost again,

You sure have a burr under your saddle for Iran. Do you personally feel threatened by the Islamic Republic of Iran?

I appreciate Iran's support of the Palestinians in the face of the constant human rights abuses the Israelis perpetrate against the Palestinians.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Before the drone was downed it managed to beam back its last recording. Analysts say the recording is of the Ayatolla lamenting...

AK: Waleed, why won't Harley Davidson sell me a StreetBob, they keep making excuses saying the only sell HDs to BadAsses. Why am I not a badass?

MBS kills one journalist in his own embassy and the world calls him the baddest of all badasses. I've just killed thousands in Yemen, another 26 in a Saudi airport, attacked 6 tankers, downed a $130 spy drone, and they say social media people love me, that I'm not a badass at all, tgat it's all a conspiracy for war.

Hetdammit, I'm a badass, I want StreetBob delivered to my house Now! What else does a badass like me have to do to get StreetBob?

Objection: Relevance?

Bolton (winner of last year's Zionist Organization of America 'good-neocon' award) was appointed by Sheldon Adelson for the very purpose of getting Iran in the U.S. crosshairs on behalf of Bibi and Israel. Stay tuned to the MSM in the weeks ahead for more close encounters and flags of the false kind.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

The United States favorite PR for interventions "maritime disasters", The Maine, Lusitania, Pearl Harbor, Gulf of Tonkin and now we have Iran, they also just love the WMD thing. First it's may have, then the may have turns into a big allegation from different sources, Then it turns into we have evidence that they did it, all of those eventually turn into they just flat out did it, sprinkle in lot's of emotion, in fact in the end it's all emotion with little facts and... poof, we got an intervention. I look forward to the next script, they may have found better writers this time, they'll keep on provoking this, and if they keep up the PR and constant drum beatings they'll get their next intervention, after all only Iran is left on those 7 Nations. Everybody must remember this one “This is a memo that describes how we’re going to take out seven countries in five years, starting with Iraq, and then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and, finishing off, Iran.” However, it's taking a little longer than the 5 years promised.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Those dastardly Iranians.

First they rescue the crews of tankers in answer to their distress calls, then they protect their airspace.

They continue to be signatories to the NNPT, and comply with it, no matter how many ways that the US breaks it, and no matter how threatening the rhetoric of the only regime that refuses to even sign one of the antiWMD treaties gets.

They continue to speak out about the violation of the Geneva Conventions and the International Convention on the Suppressionand Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid, despite their doing so somehow being deemed by the US to be a racist act, and often labeled as a sign of their intent to commit genocide.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

WilliB: The so-called "agreement" was fundamentally a surrender document and did not solve anything. Cancelling it was one of Trumps election promises, and a sensible one.

You're repeating things people told you to say in 2015 in 2019. If you said that canceling the deal and replacing it with a new one is good, then you’d have a leg to stand on. But withdrawing with no replacement was just emotional and dumb.

The good news is that Trump is talking down the situation, which is smart. His base might call that weakness but things need to deescalate.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Thanks again for your concerns, but it's just sport.

Fair enough. We are on the same page here.

I do however, have an itch to kick those who wants to limit my freedom, whether that be religious mullahs, communist thugs, or the good ole ex-spy turn dictator.

Agreed.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The mullahs want the American public to be afraid of war thus pushing for the government to to lift the sanctions.... CNN and its crows of believers falls for that. Luckily for us, currently the adults are in charge

HAHAAHAHAHA. LOL. Dang, Willi, that is the funniest thing I have ever heard. Trump—AN ADULT? Not an hour goes by without a temper tantrum, and one time it was reported in the first few weeks he wanted to blow away some country, and was told that is not how it works, you can’t just drop bombs on a country, and he FLIPPED OUT. Adults in charge, dang that is good!

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Not one of the tanker's crew members have claimed that it was the Iranians who had recused them from the sabotaged vessels. Only the Iranians, and their reporters working for Reuters, have made the false claim that Iranians rescued 44 crew members.

Heh, it's kind of funny watching people troll the right the with crazy talk as if it was real, considering that's the usual tactic of the right.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Miscalculation? There is no miscalculation when a US Aircraft is shot down. Get ready for another War ladies and Gents. I have been part of 2 Wars, and I am glad my time is over. I rather be a disabled Vet than do that all over again.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

but it's just sport.

It's a sport to cheerlead for those who want to bomb and maim the Iranian population based on dodgy intel? Because just like in Iraq, Libya, Syria etc that's what will happen.

I do however, have an itch to kick those who wants to limit my freedom

Perhaps you should look closer to home, where ever you are. That's not to say the Iranian leadership is any better. But they're no threat to you.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

trying to pressure Europe for new terms to the 2015 deal.

Iran pressure can not match the pressure Trump has as trade over rules common sence and preventing the possibility of war.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Most of this is due to Saudi Arabia wanting its Sunni-Shiite war with Iran, like we should care, with Bibi itching for a war before he is jailed for corruption—Already his wife is going to the slammer. Buy oil stocks now—the outcome is inevitable. These neocons have been itching for war ever since Iran overthrew the Shah, a tyrant that the US imposed when the CIA and the Brits got rid of Irans democratically elected president who had the temerity to ask for real money for its own oil! The Nerve! Now, for the last Act. By the way, the USloses this war, the draft, the tens of thousands of dead bodies, the hundreds of bombing throughout the US, Iraq getting involved, a larger Muslim war sucking in even more troops, around a quarter of a million, a draft, oil prices through the roof, food shortages, ethnic cleansing.....just to name some of the fun coming your way. Oh, and the 2020 elections canceled to boot!!!

2 things:

1) "Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, which answers only to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei..."

Like Her Majesty's Navy? In the sovereign's name. The Queen can literally prevent a prime minister from going to war. She is still the commander-in-chief (something the americans go to the extreme with with their presidency) just as the ayatollah is for Iran. As stated before, it has a parliamentary nature to the structure of govt, it's just the ayatollah is more publicly verbal and opinionated than the Queen.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

So I heard Iran doesn't want war but refuse to talk and is always ready for war. I don't know the truth but I know how the fans or anti-fans decide on what the truth is.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Every Iranian provocation will be met with a cruise missile strike

And then you read the news about Donny capitulating to and appeasing the Iranians by making excuses for why they shot down the drone. It was an "accident," just ask Donny.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Funny how some people seem to think that there is no evidence that Iran rescued the crews, and then decree that in the absence of said evidence, Iran must be lying, but hold that if the US claims something, no matter how long their track record of making false claims about things in the region in general, and Iran in particular, the US is telling the truth not just when there is no evidence, but even when there's evidence that contradicts the American claim.

PS, given that the rescued tanker crews were interviewed by Iranian reporters, with an Iranian news program on the TV they were watching, and talked about the rescue and how Iranians were treating them, you have to wonder what it would take to convince some people that Iranians rescued the tanker crews.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

I've posted before what I personally want:For Iran to voluntariky give up its nuclear ambition

Me too. It would be nice if American and say 5-6 other nations got together, and worked with Iran to put together an agreement with them whereby they don't create nuclear weapons, and instead work together with the world. Imagine that. I don't see how it could ever happen though.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

all of the sailors got METALS for their “service.”

Iron? Copper? Steele?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

@IloveCoffee

If i was Iran, i would be moving as fast as i can to get a nuclear weapon

Right. A dandy answer for the “Jewish Question”. Try thinking of the Iranian clerics as clerics and not statesmen.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

trump is not pleased. He has been caught out by a drone. LOL

There is a joke here.

If the drone was in Iranian Airspace and they shot it down, I cannot see why trump is complaining.

The only crime that I can see is that trump got caught spying.

Petulant little snot isn't he. Damaged oil tankers are a minor problem says trump, shot down my spy drones, then I will drone on and on and on.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I don't blame them for shooting down this drone . The USA would do the same if another country breached its airspace in such an aggressive act .

LOL, US, Japan have rules, I can tell you it's not based on trigger happy engagement. Japan just sent up fighters to escort a Russian 'BOMBER' from its airspace, that is what a reasonable engagement look like.

Shoot first, lie later, is not reasonable.

Sigh...where do you get your stuff from?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Right-wingers are so stupid! My god, do these people pushing for war still don't know the difference between Shiite Iran and the largely Sunni members of al Qaeda, and they've had 16 painful years to learn it. But Pompeo's not clever enough to pull off the full Wolfowitz yet. The CIA claiming a link between these TWO groups who despise each other? What, last year the sunnis, maybe Al Qaeda planted a bomb in Iran killing a bunch of Iranian troops, and the crap hit the fan in that country. Seriously, HOW STUPID these conservatives are, can’t do simple history or sociology in their run up to war. I guess those military-war stocks have plateau-ed out and some of these conservatives are pissed about not getting more return on their dollar because.....in the end...who cares about Iran? Oh, Japan does! It is buying Iranian oil!

Oh, and Shimon Masada, Iran a threat to you? The USA shot down a passenger plane filled with civilians, the US never apologized and all of the sailors got METALS for their “service.” It is the Iranians who should be afraid. Boy, Mossad is busy trolling sites lately.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

zichi - Whats's going to happen when war planes are shot down and American pilots returned in bodybags?

It will mean that lots and lots of Iranians have already died. If it comes to that. When the Iranian leaders have all been captured, or killed, Iran will lose it's ability to threaten it's neighbors, and all traffic thru the strait.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

RichardPearce - Those dastardly Iranians.

LOL. Not one of the tanker's crew members have claimed that it was the Iranians who had recused them from the sabotaged vessels. Only the Iranians, and their reporters working for Reuters, have made the false claim that Iranians rescued 44 crew members.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Nonsense...the deal was working just fine , everyone from the UN, the Europeans , Iran and the Obama admin was fine with it until the Don decided to rip it up at the behest of the Israel/Saudi/ Neocon warmongering axis.

Non sense, the sanctions were working fine until Obama ripped it up under pressure from oil customers, Volkswagen, etc The EU is a cesspool of corporate self interest, and has an even bigger alt-right problem than anywhere else.

Since lifting sanctions conflicts has broke out in more parts of the middle east than during the gulf war or Arab springs, ALL funded by the $100 billion that OBAMA released to Iran. Sigh, blind devotion to a terrorit.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

The US would deny it to avoid looking bad. It's all about optics.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

I keep tellin' ya'll Trump has Bolton on a tight leash.

...and he better keeps it that way. Bolton is the stereotypical neocon warmonger, not different from the neolib counterparts.

But Trump is smart enough to use him as a useful tool.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

lovecoffee:

The United States is like that school bully that keeps pushing you, tripping you as you walk

"The United States" does not have consistent policy. They change governments occasionally. Count your blessing that war criminal Clinton is not president currently.

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

Wolfpack:

Every Iranian provocation will be met with a cruise missile strike on a Revolutionary Guard asset, oil platform or pipeline.

No, it won´t. Luckily for us, the neocon/neolib cabale is not in charge right now, and Trump is not stupid enough to fall for the Iranian provocations and Israeli/Saudi prodding. He will just keep the sanctions screws on. As he should.

The Mullahs are getting desperate and are lashing out

Exactly. The mullah directed provocations are proof that the sanctions are working. The mullahs want the American public to be afraid of war thus pushing for the government to to lift the sanctions.... CNN and its crows of believers falls for that. Luckily for us, currently the adults are in charge.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

It's a sport to cheerlead for those who want to bomb and maim the Iranian population based on dodgy intel? Because just like in Iraq, Libya, Syria etc that's what will happen.

No, and I've posted before what I personally want:

For Iran to voluntariky give up its nuclear ambition; or

Forcefully, denied its nuclear ambition.

Because Iran has shown time and again, for any situation, they will go the most extreme route instead of the reasonable route. Japan just scrambled fighters to usher a Russian 'bomber' from its air space. Iran shot down a surveillance drone and biasted about it. Which is a threat to lives, bomber or surveillance drone? Assuming the drone even ventured into Iranian airspace, which I doubt, because drones are programmed to fly outside restricted and enemy airspace.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

You might want to check the cost again

Yeah $130 millions, thanks.

You sure have a burr under your saddle for Iran. Do you personally feel threatened by the Islamic Republic of Iran

Thanks again for your concerns, but it's just sport.

I do however, have an itch to kick those who wants to limit my freedom, whether that be religious mullahs, communist thugs, or the good ole ex-spy turn dictator.

I can understand those who have opposing views to mine, though I just wish when things turn to shiit that all of a sudden everyone of them wants to migrate to a free country instead of their ole favourite. Just look at communist South America for shining example.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

Perhaps you should look closer to home, where ever you are. That's not to say the Iranian leadership is any better. But they're no threat to you.

I would suggest you would just look. Because you've obviously not seen, let's started with the 79 oil crisis...google the rest. They are a nefarious force yesterday, today, and tomorrow, they do not deserve nuclear weapons.

And of course they're a threat to me, they're a threat to you too, you just choose to not see it. When was the last time you boarded an international flight? All those extra security measures, they're because of Iran and its proxy.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Oh my!

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

The USA is completely responsible for this mess after withdrawing from the Nuclear agreement with Iran .

What a bunch of BS! We’ve been at odds with Tehran since 1979 what a ludicrous thing to even think, that deal wouldn’t have done anything to keep Iran contained, the Saudis knew it, the Israelis knew it and the US knew it.

Donald Trump has proven the USA cannot be trusted to honor its agreements from one administration to another and that will have repercussion for decades after Trump has left office.

One can only hope so.

I am sure Trump will get his war with Iran

Seems like the liberals are the ones that want war because they seem to be the loudest screaming about it.

but it may not go the way he expects and it is young American soldiers that will pay the price for his duplicity and hubris.

Well, let’s see if Iran wants to do the right thing, it’s ups to them how the rest plays out.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Crazy Joe:

The USA is completely responsible for this mess after withdrawing from the Nuclear agreement with Iran .

That is probably what CNN tells you, but it does not pass a fact check. The so-called "agreement" was fundamentally a surrender document and did not solve anything. Cancelling it was one of Trumps election promises, and a sensible one.

Donald Trump has proven the USA cannot be trusted to honor its agreements from one administration to another

What, you are upset that a president actually follows through on his election promises? Well, I guess if you are used to Clinton/Obama politics, that would be a shock for you.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

Bolton is the stereotypical neocon warmonger, not different from the neolib counterparts.

But Trump is smart enough to use him as a useful tool.

Exactly!

Question 1 : Have the Iranians been on their best behavior since Trump took office? No.

Didn,t realize Trump was elected as a boss Iranians had to justify their behavior ( to )

Let me rephrase: Have the Iranians been causing mayhem in Yemen and Syria during Trump's presidency? Yes. Has Trump ordered any attacks on Iran? No. is Trump showing restraint when it comes to Iran and a desire to avoid war? Yes.

Probably the same drone that attacked the tankers

Pure conjecture.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

Trump will probably write a condolence letter to the family of the drone pilot.
