Good, let Russia get its hands dirty in Iraq, like the U.S. has for over a decade.

"Like the U.S. has for over a decade"?? The U.S. unilaterally made the decision to go into Iraq, based on incorrect data and lies, without being asked by anyone, or even supported by much of anyone. The US got dirty by choosing to go into Iraq, it wasn't being in Iraq that made their hands dirty.

The US invasions were planned way before Bush. Gen Wesley Clark talks about it in a U-tube video. Iraq probably had its most stability during Saddam Hussein, like it or not. As fas as the Muslim religion, it shows that it is divided, and a kingdom divided against itself with not stand.

" American officials have also said a proposed $500-million plan to arm and train moderate rebels in neighboring Syria could also help Iraq fight ISIL, which operates in both countries. "

There are no words to describe such mind-boggling stupidity. These American fools seriously think that somehow there is a firewall between the Sunni extremists in Syria which they are supporting and the Sunni extremists in Iraq which they are opposing? Un-friggin-believable.

Getting very messy...

Maliki on Thursday announced that Baghdad was buying more than a dozen Sukhoi aircraft from Russia in a deal that could be worth up to $500 million (368 million euros).

I saw on TV unloading fighter jets from Cargo plan and they were very bad shade. I doubt about some Jets will ever fly and operate over Iraqi sky.

How many millions dollars will go into officials' pocket?

Kobuta Chan, this is an all out Sunni-Shiite war starting, IMO.

And you're right. Lot's of top hats and dancing when these war machine deals go through.

Russia is not nearly as compassionate. Russia would love to control oil prices more than they do now. Russia will absolutely move forward with the sole interest being themselves.

Quite concerning.

Strangerland -- did you read my whole post? That was my whole point. Just like the U.S. made a huge mistake by following Russia into Afghanistan, I hope Russia makes the same mistake by getting involved in Iraq.

Amazing....this american sense of entitlement. Russia is HELPING you clean up your OWN mess and while you accepting their help you actually want to hurt your ALLIES. Same thing as america is doing to europe right now. Typical American mentality. I know for a fact that most Americans dont think the way you do. Unfortunately some do and give the rest of us americans a bad international image.

Hardly Russia is an ally for the USA. It is like to be ally for well-known murderer, coward and traitor. How Japanese can tolerate Americans, providing them a soil for military bases after infamous nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is beyond my understanding.

as Russia delivered Sukhoi warplanes to aid Baghdad in what diplomats warn is an existential battle against Sunni militants.

Good, let Russia get its hands dirty in Iraq, like the U.S. has for over a decade. Iraq, as the article says, for all intents and purposes no longer exists. It is three parts -- Sunni, Shia and Kurd. And since Bush foolishly took out Hussein, it has just been a matter of time before it blew up.
