Actually, the Christian minority has been terrorized by both Sunni and Shia muslims for a long time, the news are late to pick this up.
That is what happens when you introduce "democracy" in places like this.
Zenny11
WilliB.
Agree, most likely they lived alongside happily for a long time.
Too many people today still think that Democracy is the Golden Bullet that will sort everything out.
It Ain't and can cause as much good as bad.
asahi_man
Can you imagine the outrage if the muslims living in the western christian countries were subject to the same behaviour as dished out to the christians in iraq?
yabits
What happened? The United States launched an attack that left the nation in chaos, and gave radical Muslims the green light to terrorize non-Muslims.
yabits
Yeah, it's called Bosnia and Kosovo.
goddog
Asahi-man hit the nail. Good question.

Iraq was not so bad under Hussein, but old W Bush just had to get some revenge, invade the whole country, blow everything up and now we are paying for it with not only taxes but with the lives of our men and women in uniform who are being asked to serve in messed up places like Iraq. The USA should get out, let say the Saudis, Kuwait folk etc..do their share. They speak the language, they understand their culture, while our US men and women their are just sitting ducks, to be shot at by both the Sunni Muslims and the Shiite Muslims. I guess it is only wishful thinking, the rich cowards in Saudi etc..would never give their lives for poor Iraqis.

It's ethnic cleansing, pure and simple, carried out in the name of Islam.
If not, say it's just Sunnis trying to get support from other bullies in the area, then we might expect a different sect to help protect them.
yabits, Bosnia and Kosovo, yes, but the international community rallied round and helped the Muslims. Many Muslims seem to have conveniently forgotten that part...

Except for the attempts at genocide (of Kurds, marsh Arabs) and the subsidies to families of 'Palestinian' suicide bombers, paid for out of the public purse, though the country was supposedly starving under the embargo by the Clinton administration.
Christians are terrorized in Egypt, in Indonesia and probably anywhere they seek to coexist with Mohammedans.
TimRussert
Meanwhile, Obama is back in his adopted home of Indonesia, regurgitating what he learned in the madrass there, and trying to tell the world that jihad has many different shades of meaning and violence is not among them.
Mittsu
Not ethninc cleansing. Religion is not ethnicity. Agree, Iraq was much better controlled under Saddam (similar to Syria today) and this stuff didn't happen. This and Afghanistan both triumphs for the US of A.

Why is it that Christians are not allowed to hit back those who kill and torture them on spree? These murderers go free with impunity. Where is the human rights that America and all other free nations has been shouting about?
nandakandamanda
Mittsu, is not an attempt to move a whole human traditional community out of your country ethnic cleansing? What would you call it then?
Madverts
Christian Iraqis are being advised to get the hell out of dodge by some church seniors. This is a rotten situation getting worse. And of course once the Christians and the gays are totally iradicated via persection, it's just a question of Who's next, and when.
No wonder Timmy is prattling on about Indonesia and space aliens instead of manning up to the reality of Mission Accomplished.
nandakandamanda
And the Islamic websites and recruiters assure the newbies that Islam is under attack, that Muslims are being persecuted??? Ha. ha. ha. ha. ha....
NeoGeo
Since the US invasion of iraq no one is safe in iraq atheist, christian, muslim or jew. As bush once said mission accomplished!
MisterCreosote
But the same terror can be found in Pakistan, Indonesia, Egypt and even Turkey. The common denominator is one of the religions you mentioned...
Madverts
100,000 to a million dead in the last few years in the countries you cite , Old Friend?
Thought not.
WilliB
NeoGeo:
Yes, nobody is safe. But lets get real for a moment: Are the violent religious misunderstanders who commit the terrorism found among atheists, christians, jews, yazidis, or mandeans? Of course not. Those groups are only on the receiving end.
MisterCreosote
Spare us the creepy 'old friend' stuff. You sound like John McCain.
And no, there is no figure comparable to the 100,000 dead - - because that number is from your imagination.
WilliB
Madverts:
Saddams Baathist dictatorship kept the religious fanatics under control. I thought a frequent commentator like you would know that.
nandakandamanda
What is a 'hated' Muslim?
He was hated, yes, but no-one really thought of him as a Muslim.
Being a Muslim is not a reason in itself to be hated, except by a few bigoted people maybe. The VAST majority of people on the planet wish the Muslims well, and fervently hope they can sort out some of their internal problems. Aside from isolated pockets, there is no coordinated conspiracy against Islam.
Madverts
That's one of the reasons I opposed the invasion willi. A so-called war on terror that created a terrrorists breeding ground. Even you apparently thought it was a disasterous idea.
Madverts
Amanda, that was directed at willi and his anti-Islamic crusade.
nandakandamanda
Madverts, thanks. I wasn't sure how to read your comment.
Helter_Skelter
No one is safe in any muslim country atheist, christian, muslim or jew.
NeoGeo
willb
you forgot to mention muslims are also being killed in iraq why did you miss that out???? Also did you interview the people who kill and ask their religous beliefs ? these problems are all because of the illegal US invasion plain and simple!
SuperLib
In your opinion would it be wise for Iraq to install a dictatorship again to reduce the threat of terrorism?
