Islam vs. Tolerance

e.g.

Islam NOT EQUAL to Tolerance

nice headline!

A good unbiased article. "Religious extremists" all religions have them. But they are a minority that causes all the problems for those who respect and understand their own faiths. “The Arab world is on the edge of choosing between joining the modern world and political development, or to remain as in the last few centuries,” and that about sums up the ME.

There is a huge gap between tolerance and respect. I have no respect for a religion that murders people for their sexual orientation, puts women in burlap sacks, and ransacks diplomatic compounds over cartoons. However, I can tolerate them. I only wish they would do the same for me.

I worship freedom, particularly free expression. I don't expect religious folks to respect me for it. They probably think I'm a right fool (or worse). However, I DO expect them to tolerate it.

“The West should accept the fact that Muslims might tolerate a specific level of criticism on Islam, but not mockery or blasphemy.”

SOrry, that's not good enough. Being a member of the world community requires a thick skin. If you want to isolate yourself, then turn off your iPhones and computers, shut down the TV networks, and build yourself an Islamic version of North Korea. Otherwise, participation in the global community requires following a few very simple rules. One of them is not committing crimes because your feelings are hurt.

There is NO human right to not be offended.

The first step ahead is for all people to choose NOT to take offense.

'I think the film is meant to provoke us as Muslims,' he said. 'My personal view is that we should have ignored it. It received much more attention than it deserves. Really, it was not worth people dying for.'

Finally, some words of wisdom.

Any kind of INTELLIGENT debate about all of this hate, anger and violence is better than just running around killing and hurting others. My guess, this is some kind of POSITIVE step in a positive direction.

Salman Rushdie was on The Daily Show a few days ago. He had some interesting points:

You should be able to view that overseas. He talked about there being two sides in the issue, one designed to inflame Islamists and Islamists who take the bait and start burning things down. In his view it's turning into an industry to produce outrage.

thank you sheik Hameed-sama, about time someone spoke up before the westerners go into their ethnic cleansing fit and treat all muslims alike

Good article. We need more information about how emerging Islamic countries, including Iran, Pakistan, Iraq etc., deal with their conflicting inner forces and mature.

The eventual answers, checks and balances, affecting the rest of the world, will surely be born there.

Its about time the Islamic world started putting two and two together. Sucks that it took centuries for some to figure it out this far. Unfortunately there still are some countries enforcing strict Islamic laws and using that method to spread the extremist way of thinking (take Mali for example).

You know whats I find strange about all this?

Muslim countries routinely make fun of Christians and Jews in their media, but they can't seem to handle it when some christian guy gives them the same treatment.

Hypocrisy much?

Tolerance is a two-way street. We will do unto others as they do unto us. Let's see how it all plays out.

Islam and Tolerance. There's two words you don't often see in the same article.
