Latest count: Over 800 palestinians dead. 14 Israelis dead.

The Israeli prime minister’s office said the U.N. action was not practical, and senior cabinet ministers decided to press on with the offensive.

There is no way for Israelis to kill Gazans if they don't continue to press on. < :-)

Israel and Hamas ignore U.N. call for cease-fire alongwith U.S.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It takes two but the Hamas started it. Egypt had their border closed as well so their excuse does not work. The death count shows how Israel is winning except in the foreign press! They need to carry this through till the finish.

It's, as predicted, all going for pear-shaped for the Israelis. As stated they will not achieve their objectives and simply radicalise more of the population. That's now happening in the west Bank, many who could not and would not relate to Hamas are now giving their support exclusively because of what Israel is doing in Gaza. Again, due to feeling they have a right to 'go where ever' and 'do whatever' they want the Israelis have made the situation worse. So, instead of undermining Hamas they have exposed the PA as lacking credibility and moved more people to support extremism, GREAT game plan aye? Way to go Israel. It's an exercise of gross negligent stupidity on the part of the Israeli government.

Since both Hamas and Israel have rejected calls for a ceasefire (according to BBC TV), it seems both sides want to continue the fight...

Since Israel always ignores ceasefires anyway, why bother? Hamas also wants the illegal blockade to stop, which Israel wants to keep in place.

Thousands of pro-Hamas supporters, with baseballs bats and molotov cocktails, turned out to protest in Oslo, Norway. Many arrests were made last night. I fear this will only serve to radicalize Europeans.

Why does Israel enjoy killing so much?

They ignore every reolution, worse than Saddam, yet are supported by American right wing extremists and their warmonering government.

Just saw more atrocities on the BBC by the Israeli'sw, mainly kids and women i may add. The state of Israel is wicked and should be 亜rogue stae like N Korea.

Can anybody name a Palestinian leader that supports the existence of an Israeli state?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Can anyone name an Israeli who supports the existence of Palestine?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Ya know, I don't know why everyone else in the world is even involved in this. Its clear that the democratically elected leaders of Gaza want to continue to fight. Israel is happy to continue killing them. Why is anyone else even involved in this. If the people of Gaza, don't want the war, then obviously they should choose someone else to lead them. Likewise Israel... How is what happens there anyone elses business? If either side wants a cease fire, and asks for help in getting it, then sure. But since neither side wants to stop, I say just stay out.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

so yang is your last post an acknowledgement that you can't name a Palestinian leader that supports the existence of an Israeli state?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

molenir: because some of us have a sense of injustice, of right, and some of us wish humanity to move beyond killing as a means to an end, because some of us believe in the political process. It is, counter to what's happening in many parts of the world, not the dark ages (at the moment). We're supposed to be an enlightened creature who can reason, converse and resolve issues, conflict, problems without resorting to war...

Since Israel always ignores ceasefires anyway, why bother?

One sided as always, I see...Hamas has also ignored ceasefires.

Hamas also wants the illegal blockade to stop, which Israel wants to keep in place.

Actually, Hamas' problem with the ceasefire suggestion is that it wants full border control, which neither Israel nor Egypt want it to have.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

can't answer the question can you yang?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Can't read can ya VOR, Yassar Arafat. Or are you going to adjust your original question AGAIN. Mine still stands as it was.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why does it have to be one or the other? Is there mindless Arab anti-Semitism? Yes

Is there Zionism’s insistence that a Jewish state must be created in Palestine? Yes

Can the problem be rooted in the combination? Yes

0 ( +0 / -0 )

YangYong,

The current Palestinian/Israeli conflict is rooted in the fact the two groups cannot or will not talk to each other. By Palestinian, I am specifically talking about Hamas. You would like to define Middle Eastern history with your one loaded sentence. However, Middle Eastern history cannot be defined so simply.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Techall: agreed. You have the ability for impartiality, reason and objectivity and that's what the process to peace will receive not the kind of rantings the likes of VOR blinded with hateful racism wish to see applied.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

pssst....Yang, Yassar Arafat is dead. His influence is kind of waning. Name a Palestininian leader that is willing to lead the Palaestinians out of the wilderness.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

You asked for a Palestinian leader who recognised Israel, then you 'qualify' once given an answer. Dear me. OK, living: Mahmoud Abbas and still no stones I see.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why does Israel carry on withy the genocide? I don't get it!

At lot of the Americans on here , and i reckon a few must be Jews, make it seem like Isarel is a nation of peace, that's cobblers!

They have killed more people in the Middle Esat tahn any other nation since 1948. They don't want a ceasefire, i reckon they want to blow up more schools and truck sfilled with kiddies. This terrible slaughter has to stop!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Since Israel always ignores ceasefires anyway, why bother? One sided as always

Of course. This is a one-sided conflict. The Palestinians are the victims and the Israelis are the aggressors. This is not just 2 groups who can't get along. Wake up!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Not responding to the last three responses is like watching a carload of clowns driving over a cliff. Its both tragic and funny at the same time.

Keep going guys you are on a roll. Is there a voice of reason anywhere amongst you?

If you, err 'think' the images from Gaza will temper opinion in the Arab world, causing them to reject Hamas and Hezbollah, and in turn create the "pragmatic internationalism" that Washington's foreign policy establishment dreams about, you delude yourself. Nearly 300 children dead.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sad isn't it.

Nearly 300 children dead.

Glad the article was able to mention it also.

The Islamic militant group, which was behind suicide bombings that killed hundreds of Israelis in past years,

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Hamas are finished is what I say. IDF have smashed em!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

WR10: That, unfortunately, is not true. Yet, even if they had, you seem to miss the fact that a more extremist group will fill the vacuum. Is that what anyone wants?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Present day Jordan was included in the British Mandate of Palestine. But today's Jordan doesn't want the Palestinians living in Gaza and the West Bank. I wonder why that is...

Triumvere

Thanks, interesting read. Found it to be pretty balanced with a good historical context of the faults that both sides bring to table, with a good showing of what was going on in the world at that time. The other events that really drove decisions by other Nations towards Israel and the Palistinians in their diplomatic decisions they made toward the region.

Thanks again.

"There have been daily protests in the Middle East and in Europe, where there also has been a rise in anti-Semitic attacks."

As I said, the Israeli government is full of morons if they think Jews are going to have a 'quiet life' after this; be it in the South of Israel or anywhere else in the world. I guess all those Jews in Europe, and soon to follow North America who are hit by hate crimes can thank Israel.

"In Geneva, the top U.N. human rights official called for an independent investigation of possible war crimes in Gaza for an incident in which Palestinians said Israeli forces shelled a house, killing 30 people. Israel’s military said it was not aware of the specific incident but would not have deliberately targeted the building."

Geez... maybe SuperLib can come on here and tell us yet again how superb the Israeli army is at targeting things since only 400 civilians are dead (to his credit, it was only 200 when he said it first, about a week ago). They didn't deliberately target a house full of innocents, which means they hit it by accident, which means they aren't so precise. They've also hit a UN school house, and shot to death the driver of a clearly marked UN truck as it approached the very soon to be open gate for delivering supplies. Seems their either targeting these people intentionally, or else SuperLib is just downright mistaken about how precise the Israelis are.

"U.N. officials said Friday that they planned to resume aid operations “as soon as practical,” based on Israeli assurances that aid workers would be better protected."

You mean not shot by Israeli forces.

"Two Israeli missiles clipped the roof of a building housing the offices of Iran’s English-language Press TV and a sister Arabic-language network, slightly injuring one person, the channel’s correspondent, Ashraf Shannon, said. The military said it had no knowledge of any attacks in that area."

Doh! More proof that they are either intentionally targeting said sites or they just plain suck.

"Israeli leaders oppose that step because it would allow Hamas to strengthen its hold on Gaza."

Ummm... if the Gaza land belongs to the Palestinians, and the Palestinians elected Hamas, this is perfectly legal, no? So, Israel clearly wants a weak Palestine in Gaza?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

UN should do up gaza once this war ends like at the end of lebanon-hezbollah war in 2006. Looks like same kind of situations today in gaza today. The UNIFIL(UN force) should also be done for gazan palestinians via UN.

There is better lebanon because rocket fire is now controlled by lebanese govt,UNIFIL and by peace agreements. When rockets are controlled via UN force, then there is better economic future for 1.4 million gazan palestinian . The gaza governance and UN force should follow the way of UNIFIL force and lebanon.

sayanorahello: Them Israeli thugs aint gonna follow the reolution.

The have totally ingnored Resolution 242 and carry on with racist policies and now yet more genocide. Strewth only a sadistic nutcase would support what Israel has and is still doing in he region.

It is a disgrace that the Yanks back up Israeli genocide time after time, a bleeding scandal i tell you.

Actually, Hamas' problem with the ceasefire suggestion is that it wants full border control, which neither Israel nor Egypt want it to have.

Egypt can still control its side of the border however it wants to. Israel can still control its side of the border however it wants to. However, the Gazan side of the border and its waters and its airspace should be controlled by Gazans.

As it stands, it is and has been controlled by Israel except for a brief period where Gazans got to control the flow of people, but not goods, through ONE checkpoint with Egypt. And that got shut down %86 by Israel citing "security concerns" whatever those are, until finally the border was shut down again.

Its like daddy buys his son a car for birthday, but when he wants to drive it, papa will only let him touch the steering wheel, and then abruptly yells "HANDS OFF!". The son can sit in the car, and that is it. Only daddy holds the ignition key. So, whose car is it? Do you expect the son to be happy about it? Do you think the son might stop being so angry if he gets to drive his own car already?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Doh! More proof that they are either intentionally targeting said sites or they just plain suck.

I am inclined to believe the Israeli military knows exactly what they are doing. That leaves only one option.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

likeitis: The statement I made, or question, was rhetoric -- I know full well they know what they are doing. In one statement they say they, "hit with pinpoint precision targets in Lebanon", and then it's, "UN target? We weren't aware we blew up a schoo -- I mean, hit a UN target!"

0 ( +0 / -0 )

However, the Gazan side of the border and its waters and its airspace should be controlled by Gazans.

There is no reason why the Palestinians should accept anything less.

Its sad that the world has remained silent so long.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Really? Is there a reason why Israel and Egypt might not agree? Be honest now. Nothing you want to admit about Hamas and their importing of weapons?

Far as I'm concerned, Israel has been extremely patient with Gaza. They realize that if they open the borders to let food and aid in, Hamas who doesn't care about its people, will use the opening to try to bring in Weapons so they can kill more Israelis. With these facts in mind, its not surprising that the world hasn't made a big deal of it. Hamas=terrorist group. Would you want to allow a terrorist group greater access to weapons and munitions?

I think Israel should just start carpet bombing Gaza like England did to Germany in WW2. If it was ok for them, it should be ok for Israel, right? Who cares if noncombatants get killed right?

AlfGarnett - Still with the Genocide thing huh? With a population of over 1 million, a couple hundred dead does not equal genocide. When whole villages and cities are systematically wiped out, when the number of dead reaches and exceeds 100k, then you can start crying about Genocide. Hell, I'd join you then. But when Israel is doing its best to avoid civilian casualties, despite Hamas hiding behind the skirts of its women and children, well what can I say other then that, the people of Gaza wanted this. They wanted it, and now they've got it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Nothing you want to admit about Hamas and their importing of weapons?

Does Israel import weapons? Yes, more than most countries.

Does Israel use these weapons responsibly? No, worse than most countries.

Do Palestinians need weapons for self-defense? They are in desperate need of defense.

When whole villages and cities are systematically wiped out, when the number of dead reaches and exceeds 100k, then you can start crying about Genocide.

Countless Palestinian villages have already been wiped out; where have you been? The death toll just from the past few weeks is around 800, I wonder how many died in the past 6 decades of this genocide.

But when Israel is doing its best to avoid civilian casualties,

You haven't been paying attention, have you?
