I think the IDF can do both.

Israeli PM Netanyahu says land grab against Palestinians will not stop after cease-fire.

War won't stop and also grabbing land for settlers .

Why? They couldn't stop the October 7th attacks. I suppose they must have an amazing PR operation going on though, if anyone actually takes this "totally eradicate Hamas" stuff seriously. As if it's ever worked before.
bass4funk
They were definitely caught off guard and made a huge blunder without a doubt.
Hamas sure does, and if we’re them, I would as well.
The IDF is doing a great job so far. More needs to be done.
Capuchin
Yes, it's important that Israel save the hostages from their own bombing.

To put it into some perspective, 1200 were killed and 250 were kidnapped. Many more than when the US exited Kabul.
According to the IDF, 388 soldiers have fallen since the October 7 attack.
stormcrow
When dealing and negotiating with terrorists, it’s best to be the one applying pressure.
The hostages who’ve been abused the most, such as rape victims, will probably be the last ones let go. Can’t have those rape victims smearing a religious organization like Hamas!
sakurasuki
@stormcrow The problem is which one is which, https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/5/15/nakba-mapping-palestinian-villages-destroyed-by-israel-in-1948

Really? How would you know?
According to.. the IDF.
That's probably what the Americans and the British were thinking after they overthrew the Taliban the first time.
RichardPearce
Did anyone with any sense expect the Israeli regime to stop committing war crimes and perpetrating the Crime Against Humanity defined in the ICSPCA?
Given that in the past, even when it agreed to those things, it was about as faithful to the agreement as Trump is to anything he's agreed to.

And after the cease-fire Netanyahoo's war against the Palestinian people will plunge Israel's image and reputation further down the toilet in the eyes of world opinion. Callous politicians are incapable of understanding that few humans can stomach the slaughter of innocent children, never mind their mothers, fathers and siblings. The new acronym WCNSF (wounded child no surviving family) is rattling the conscience of all who possess one. All around the world people are opening history books for the first time to understand the holocaust of Gaza and are being shocked at what they are discovering. Already 14 million Tik-Tokers have read Osama bin Laden's "Letter to America" and have expressed shock and awe to learn about the hand of America in this sordid tale of Occupation. And how many Americans have ever heard of 78 year-old Sirhan Sirhan? Who is he? And why did he do it?
Attilathehungry
There is no war against "the Palestinian people". This is useless hyperbole. Israel has the power to do much more damage than they are doing. Yet they don't. Because obviously Hamas is the target. And innocent people are being put in danger by Hamas. Ditto trite phrases like "genocide" and "carpet bombing". Anyone who uses them is not capable of rational discussion.
ycgdude
I thought Israel didn't negotiate with terrorists...
Also, Hamas is getting exactly what they wanted when they took the hostages in the first place!
RichardPearce
The Israeli regime is at war with Hamas, and with Palestine, and with international law.
It is going to lose all three wars in the long run.
Sanjinosebleed
Go straight to jail Netanyahu an don't pass go!
War criminal!
bass4funk
History.
As well as other reports of the growing Hamas body count.
Unlike the British and the Americans, Israel lives next door to these people, they know every conceivable way as to how these murderers think, in the west we prefer to take them in alive if possible, the IDF on the other hand prefers to send off to early retirement, which I’m all for.
Attilathehungry
If Bibi is a war criminal, what do you call all the Hamas leaders cowering in their hotel suites in Qatar? Funny how your rage is very selective on that point...
As for a cease fire, I think it is a bad idea. Hamas needs to surrender. Simple. End of story. If Hamas surrenders, the war and bombing would stop immediately. Yet, they don't. So any destruction and death is on THEIR heads, not Israel.
GuruMick
Netanyahu fears the day fter....when the war is finished and all those pesky international groups like the ICC and humanitarian agencies like the Red Cross come asking the hard questions.
Plus he will likely be voted out of office leaving him even less protection .Who knows, maybe the existing indictments involving bribes and corruption may be reissued.
The "if only Hamas surrendered "argument doesnt hold water when you look at 1/the West Bank and the Israeli occupation in a place NOT run by Hamas and 2/the accurate definition of Gaza as the largest jail on earth with every aspect of peoples lives brutally restricted.
What should the oppressed do ?
Israel ignores all UN resolutions and continues its expansion rendering a Palestinian state impossible.
TechSavvy!
Did Israel find anything at the hospital?

I saw an interesting article about Israel. Here it is:
Is This a Real Video of Israeli Children Singing ‘We Will Annihilate Everyone’ in Gaza?
https://www.snopes.com/news/2023/11/20/israeli-children-singing-annihilate-gaza/
and the answer yes it is.

Good Job Japan. You made the correct call. The world is turning against the West and Israel, but everyone still likes Japan. It was smart not to follow the US on this war.

How would history make you sure of what people might be thinking right now?
The Germans killed a lot of Soviet soldiers in 1941. Didn't help much in the end.
Apparently not, as October 7th indicates.
That sounds like dialogue from a straight to DVD action movie.
kurisupisu
Israelis are committing genocide against the Palestinians – it’s a war crime!
bass4funk
Hamas has kind of a repetitive history.
And the Americans killed an obscene amount of Germans, as well as Japanese and your point?
And look at the body count of Hamas piling up.
Life imitates art.

We can add "open air prison" ot the list of words and phrases that are trite, inaccurate and needless. Gaza is a funny kind of prison- it has hotels, restaurants, beaches. It is also a funny kind of prison where people can come and go- why else are there hundreds of foreign nationals there waiting to get out? So let's please stop the meaningless descriptions.
And yes, many things were found in the hospital. Weapons, rockets, ammunition, tunnels. There is even video footage of October 7 hostages being brought in. Through the main lobby no less. So anyone who says that Hamas was not using the hospital is either deluded or lying.
Raw Beer
I think israel actually thought there was a tunnel under the hospital.

Hamas agreed to a four-day pause in the fighting. It will release 50 hostages in exchange for some 150 Palestinians. Both will release women and children.
Fredrik
So, what is the news? Israel will never stop it's war against Hamas, even it they wipe out all of Gaza. If there are no living left, they will fight the ghosts (and convince the world of the sanity of it).
Desert Tortoise
At this point the only beneficiaries of continuing this war are Hamas and Bibi. Everyone else, both Israeli and Palestinian are worse off with no prospect of continuing the war making life better for either side.
Hamas and their October 7th attack do not exist in a vacuum. There are understandable reasons for both if anyone bothers to examine those reasons. This war is only making Hamas stronger and more popular. It is probably impossible for Hamas to be defeated by military force. The only way to defeat Hamas are to change the conditions of life for the people of Palestine so they do not feel a need to arm themselves and fight the Israelis. But as the Old Testament often says, the Israelis are a proud and stiff necked people so do not have high expectations for a good outcome from this war.
Desert Tortoise
Even a cursory reading of the "United States Strategic Bombing Surveys (European War, Pacific War)" written immediately after WWII reveals that bombing German cities did little to slow German industry. The same was true in Japan. The Allies were also constantly frustrated with how quickly the Germans could get factories and oil refineries up again after a big bombing raid, typically a week or less. What did work in Europe was bombing the German railroads. That stopped the coal trains which in turn immediately took power plants and steel mills off line. In the Pacific probably the most productive use of the B-29 was their campaign of aerial mining of the Inland Sea. That sank a huge amount of Japanese shipping and made a measurable decline in Japan's industrial output. But bombing cities was an effort in futility. No matter how hard we bombed them the Germans and Japanese workers still went to work and make the products their respective military's used to fight the Allies with.

Desert Tortoise- Excellent posts!
Attilathehungry
Desert Tortise; so destroying the infrastructure that allowed the Axis powers to fight was effective- that is what I am getting from your posts. This is true. And it is why the Israelis are similarly trying to degrade the Hamas terror infrastructure rather than bombing indiscriminately.
Thank you for making that valuable point.
Raw Beer
Not bombing indiscriminately?! Have you not seen the aerial images of Gaza?
RichardPearce
That even reporters chosen by the Israeli regime from media that drop any reporters who aren't willing to treat Israeli propaganda as credible, after being escorted through the devastation of the Israeli attack on Palestine to a damaged hospital surrounded by dead civilians, and presented with 'proof' (like a few pristine weapons and Palestinian language calendars) that the hospital was being used to shelter Hamas command centers are refusing to treat that as meaningful tells you exactly how gruesome what Israel is doing is.
Attilathehungry
Raw Beer; a month plus of "indiscrimintate bombing" would kill a hell of a lot more than 10,000 people, even IF we believe the inflated numbers coming from Hamas. The Israellis have 300 attack aircraft. They could utterly devastate all of Gaza in 48 hours if that was their goal. Obviously, it isn't.
The eagerness to portray the Jews as the bad ones merely confirms the pervasive influence of the classic Marxist narrative being pushed. The Gazans are the oppressed, the Israelis (even though there was not one Jew in Gaza) are somehow the oppressors. Therefore the Gazans (and by extention Hamas) are blameless for their crimes, while Israel is responsible for whatever happens.
The existence of Hamas tunnels has been known and confirmed for years. Otherwise, with the amount of aid poured into Gaza, the place would be flourishing. Yet somehow it isn't. The money and supplies were stolen and used to make rockets and terrorist infrastructure.
