So some of my cousins, aunts, uncles, neighbors etc...can finally wrok and live in peace and try their luck with the so called American Dream?? I think it is good, because, if it is a law to help young people who are going to school, going to do good for themselves and for their families, great. Now, the other side of the coin, how many US CITIZENS are gang members?? How many idiot fools, born and raised in the USA who kill, who drug and poison others but no way to deport them, what are we supposed to do with all of these parasites?? Oh, Joe Blow was born here in Texas? In Montana, but Joe Blow is a drug addict?? He is a loser, lazy?? But one more, say some losers are illegal, from China, Russia, Mexico, El Salvador etc..it sounds very easy to just deport them, but in the case with Mexico, the USA is just dumping them along with regular illegals, in other words, the USA is dumping rapists, killers, drug dealers etc..who are from deep, deep Mexico right on the USA southern border with Mexico, and these horrible criminals just regroup, get ready to contact their buddies back in San Diego, LA, Houston, Chicago etc..while killing, raping, etc..on the Mexican side of the border, oh, do you think the US government BOTHERS to let the Mexican authorities as to who is a low level criminal?? Who is a real killer?? NO!!! This is one big complaint from the Mexican government for years, and then these same animals are on the loose and they start killing on BOTH SIDES OF THE BORDER!!!

-3 ( +10 / -13 )

While it is true that most are born in Mexico, the policy does not say anything about Mexico at all. With 12 million illegal immigrants in the USA, nearly every country in the world has a representative in the United States illegal immigrant underworld. Even some Canadians, Brits, and Germans will benefit. Not to mention...

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Absolutely agree with you, Amigo!

What's worse is those animals teach their lack of values and of humanity to their children who are born in the States, and like you said, they can deport a good kid together with the killers, but the criminal's equally warped son gets to stay and jis juvenile record is sealed when he turns 18. I think it's time to do away with citizenship by birth and give "permanent residency by birth", and remind the kids that if they are good, they'll get to be citizens, if not, they'll get deported from their birth country back to where their parents were born.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

A liberal estimate is 12 percent of the US population is "foreign" born. Illegal, however, is very low. Too often Americans confuse the two, because of fear of foreigners and the hysteria spread by pop-culture media like Fox News and hate radio. At least this law temporarily puts fear on hold for a few hundred thousand kids.

I worry that it only exacerbates the difficulty my "foreign" wife has in coming to the United States. The illegal ones get top priority visas, and she, legally waits indefinitely for never because of race.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

If you have such issues with people in the states, then why to you still seek to live there? Either put up or shut up! Become an American and make changes or stay in your own damned country but don't try to have it bot ways. I came form one of those families that you complain about and am now living the "American Dream" because I paid my way through college and worked hard. It's not that difficult. You can do it yourself or on handouts like Obama..

5 ( +8 / -3 )

Don't get me wrong, I like the law. Except this wasn't really signed by Obama into law because Congress lacked to guts to put a bill on his desk.

800,000 possible kids as compared to the total 100,000 all illegal aliens hiding in Japan might sound like a huge amount to absorb. But it isn't a strain at all. Because the US is already handling it, new law or not, and these kids can actually contribute without joining the underworld of illegal things.

The elephant in the room that nobody is talking about is the 12 million illegal aliens in the USA that are not covered by this new non-law binding policy. Not invited? I think they were when Ronald Reagan granted amnesty to their cousins when he was the POTUS.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Read "Hispanic vote".

Still good for them.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

So in other words, the parents of these children broke the law and they are not going to be held responsible for it. When a young person is illegal it isn't the fault of the US government or the people, it is their parents fault. So their children become their anchor babies as they no doubt will inevitably be granted US citizenship and will thus be able to sponsor their illegal parents. In no time 800,000 will become 8 million. No need to respect the laws of America, you got her by ignoring them - no since being a law abiding citizen now. America will be happy to borrow trillions more from the Chinese to set you up in a nice government home, with your food and medical costs paid for by Uncle Barry.

For those who obey the law and respect their prospective new country by applying to the government, paying the costs, and waiting for years, you are idiots and losers. You are stupid for obeying the laws that every other country on earth expects of non-citizens. You would have been better off disrespecting the laws of America and just overstaying your visa or walk across the border.

Let no law or amount of pandering stand in the way of Obama's re-election.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

@Elbuda Mexicano

Now, the other side of the coin, how many US CITIZENS are gang members??

The issue isn't whether American's are model citizens. There are other laws that deal with them. It's about people that are in the country illegally. However, now that illegal aliens are exempt from the law, I don't see why American gang members should not also be given free reign to break laws as they fit. Heck, let's just let everyone break whatever laws they want and just forgive them. I'd like to stop paying my taxes - I wonder if the President will let me get away with that?

Obama has really gone mad! What other country in the world would invite such lawlessness and lack of control over it's own future?

“Here in Texas, we face the impacts of illegal immigration on our economy every day, as well as the violence from drug cartels and transnational gangs infiltrating our neighborhoods.” ...David Dewhurst, the lieutenant governor of Texas and a Republican U.S. Senate candidate, said in a statement.

Hey lieutenant governor of Texas(now there's a great qualification) what does that have to do with graduates, veterans and non-criminals? Just a typical pea brain comment pandering to the lowest of IQ's.

The number one billionaire in the world is from Mexico. The Mexico government is probably having a celebration due to Obama new immigration law.

The old America was a leader. The new America is a follower. America have become like Rome.

Obama may have bought the Latino votes by using his excutive power but the citizens are still without jobs. Hey now they will have to compete with the new 800,000 (probably higher) people.

Here is a wish list.

1) Can Obama use his excutive power to create jobs?.

2) Can Obama use his excutive power to do away with the requirement of tipping because the service is so poor?

3) Can Obama use his excutive power tor raise the minimum wage to $10?

4) Can Obama use his excutive power to lower the gas prices to $0.98?

5) Can Obama use his excutive power to have every Friday to be a national holiday?

6) Can Obama use his excutive power to aurthorized one month of vacation?

7) Can Obama use his excutive power to give away free health care to everyone?

8) Can Obama use his excutive power to allow people to go to college for free?

9) Can Obama use his excutive power to give everyone 32oz of soda everyday for forever?

10) Can Obama use his excutive power to require a free toy for every meal bought at MD's?

11) Can Obama use his excutive power to require people pay $1 for a movie/3D movie?

President Bush's eldest brother, Governor Bush (Ex George W and Ex Jeb) went to Mexico when he was a high school senior, Si Señor. He taught English in a high school exchange and met the future Mrs. Eldest-brother-of-the-President, Colomba.

What was the law back then? The story in the El Paso paper is that she told her father in Mexico that she was going to the Post Office. According to the story, that was the last time Jeb's father-in-law ever saw his daughter.

It was not an "alien abduction," by any conventional measure. But what was it, really?

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

OOPS. OOPS. OOPS. Once again, Obama use of excutive power sidestep the Supreme Court and Congress.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Skip, I agree that this is an end around run. And yes, the POTUS has run amock, not just now but... since... Kennedy was shot? I don't know exactly when it began, but yes it is too much power.

We started to control the executive power, until this guy from Texas, son of a POTUS, took the POTUS himself. Obama is crowne royal on that. It was wrong before and it is wrong now.

I have a "dog in the fight," because I am on my eighth year of bringing my Far East Asian wife, baby not included, to the United States. Baby died in the process. I know the law, and the law is not just "broken," it is corrupt in the USA.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

The current system, as Elbuda points out, isn't working. We need a clear, fair, and fast immigration policy, and nobody wants to mess with it because there is so much passion related to this issue that it is political suicide to make any strong, permanent moves. That said, once the payroll taxes start coming in from the children of immigrants, this particular move may look a lot better than it does to some now.

At this time, I have no opinion on the matter. I would like to respond to your statement.

The current system is working. There are laws in place to address immigration. The Arizona immigration law is being decided by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court have ruled in favor of Arizona immigration law and would have likely give States more power to enforce the immigration laws.

Illegal immigration wouldn't be an issue today if the economy was doing fine.

Passion is over doing it more likely people are emotional about the subject matter from both ends on immigration. To say that they will contribute in taxes well wouldn't the young adult Americans who are hired in their place be contributing in taxes too.

The bottom line is what Obama have done is taken the decision from the Supreme Court and Congress so that he can get re-elected no matter what.

I have a lot of respect for Cesar Estrada Chavez who was a Latino civil rights activist. There were a time when ordinary people did extraordinary thing. Well today it seems like...

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

I am happy for the kids. I am happy the USA will not need to waste resources on kiddie round-ups, and the said kids can be "all you can be."

The time has not changed yet, in NYC. Today is the historical date this happened.

Happy Children's Amnesty Day!

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Why now? it is simply a shameless political move for the coming election. U.S. should enforce the immigration law while waiting for a new comprehensive law in dealing with illegal immigration. To by pass the congress and to use executive power like this is low and showing how desperate Obama is willing to do for his own self interest. Besides "economic stupid" policy, now this administration screws those who follow the rule and waiting in line for their turn. What next? Simply, it is not a good morality lesson for law abiding citizens, but does Obama care? Forwarding over the cliff!

4 ( +5 / -1 )

This spits in the faces of those who followed legal channels to get citizenship. Cheat the system and get the same benefits in the end...sound fair to you?

Go ahead, those of you sympathizing with illegal immigrants, let your visas in Japan lapse in a show of solidarity. Make a stand for illegals regardless of age. Tell us how it works out for you.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

The issue here is executive branch over-reach. Obama totally circumnavigated the legislative branch; the branch of our government that is entrusted with making federal laws.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

I am happy for the kids. I am happy the USA will not need to waste resources on kiddie round-ups, and the said kids can be "all you can be." Happy Children's Amnesty Day!

BTW, they are not kids when it applies to 30 year olds. Why didn't Obama give their parents the same treatment? They contributed to society. They been here the same amount of time as the kids. Obama is not for family staying together.

The reason Obama only did it for the "kids" because Americans or human beings in general have a soft spot for the good liitle kids but never for the bad little kids. It's all about perspective and psychology.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

President Obama has "evolved" on the appropriate role as President:

Faced by a young person who disproved his claim about his Administration’s treatment of these young people, the President now seemed to concede that students and young people eligible for the DREAM Act are being deported and says that it’s not his responsibility to change that: “America is a nation of laws, which means I, as the President, am obligated to enforce the law. I don’t have a choice about that. That’s part of my job,” he said. When Ramos asked a follow-up question about granting formal administrative relief to undocumented youth, Obama was even more forceful: “There are enough laws on the books by Congress that are very clear in terms of how we have to enforce our immigration system that for me to simply, through executive order, ignore those congressional mandates would not conform with my appropriate role as President.”

Hey lieutenant governor of Texas(now there's a great qualification) what does that have to do with graduates, veterans and non-criminals? Just a typical pea brain comment pandering to the lowest of IQ's.

lieutenant governor is, in the unique political system texas has, actually a very powerful position. just check who the former one is and where he is today. we are talking about a state with a gdp the size of canada. 'pandering' ? it is obama who is pandering. even that rare bird, an honest democrat, will admits it. the party of slavery, secession and jim crow is now the party of open borders and anarcho-tyranny.

Next GOP President is simply gonna undo this EO with an EO of his own. Not only will the Liberals not be able to say anything about it, it will be their own fault for trying to do this via EO.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

Obama is ruling by decree here. In the US system it is up the Congress to make laws here, and not to the President. If the country allows this, it is a big step towards democracy. One shudders to think how much more he can corrupt the system if he is allowed to carry on for another 4 years.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Sorry, should have been "a big step away from democracy".

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Another attempt by Obama to by-pass Congress and rule this country by executive fiat. If anything, trying to placate minorities to win their votes just proves how desperate the administration is about the upcoming election.

But this might turn into yet another exploding cigar moment for Team Obama. Allowing 800,000 illegals to compete for jobs in our sagging workforce that Obama created isn't going to help The One get re-elected. Unemployment figures by the BLS show young blacks and Hispanic youths who're in this country legally hovers around 25 percent. Pretty sure folks eligible to vote in those demographics are not going to be very happy about Obama allowing nearly 1 million people living here illegally to vie for jobs a shrinking U.S. labor market.

how many US CITIZENS are gang members?? How many idiot fools, born and raised in the USA who kill, who drug and poison others but no way to deport them, what are we supposed to do with all of these parasites??

@ Elbuda Mexicano: That is an irrelevant question. The simple fact that they are criminal even though that is a bad thing is not the issue, but the fact that they are US citizens. They have the right to be a criminal if they so choose because they are legal. Just because someone broke the law to come to the US but they are nice people still doesn't dismiss the fact that they broke the law. Since you are on the legal criminals, how many of those in the prisons are illegals that the US taxpayer has to pay for?

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Another attempt by Obama to by-pass Congress and rule this country by executive fiat.

Right! - because Congress has really been on the ball with this issue, fulfilling their responsibilities! I imagine full immigration reform is just around the corner! But wait - isn't the common complaint that Obama is too weak and vacillating?

...trying to placate minorities to win their votes.... Unemployment figures by the BLS show young blacks and Hispanic youths who're in this country legally hovers around 25 percent.

Those who benefit from this decision are still not able to vote, yet he's trying to placate minorities by increasing competition for jobs with minorities who are able to vote? That is quite a muddled message.

Republicans have recently adopted as a slogan "predictability," as in "businessmen will not invest unless they are sure everything will remain the same forever." Well, there is a huge number of young, bright, talented people whose only "crime" is that they were brought here as children. Different states have different attitudes towards them: some allow them in-state tuition for state universities; some don't allow them admission to state university at all. Obama's decision will not change this, but it will give them "predictability": that if they stay out of trouble, they can get an education somewhere, gain legal employment, and embark on the path to gain legal citizenship.

Sounds quite realistic to me. It's not like they'd be going "home," and it's not like the US is cold-hearted enough to round them up and deport them. They're here and they're here to stay, so as long as they're good, why not throw them a bone?

Oh, and I can imagine how this will aid their parents in keeping them on the straight and narrow. Talk about an incentive to be a good kid!

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Immigration wouldn't be a problem if there were no welfare state. If people came to America and KNEW that the only way they could get money was to WORK for it, there wouldn't be any problems. The same with citizens. If the only way people could get money was to WORK for it, there wouldn't be any problems.

As Milton Friedman (nobel prize winning economist) pointed out years ago, nobody had a problem with immigration in the U.S. when it wasn't a huge welfare state. All the immigrants that came knew they had a lot of hard work ahead of them, but it was better than where they came from.

Of course, this is the same thing that collapsed the Roman Empire, it slowly turned into a giant welfare state, destroyed their currency through devaluation, and self destructed. Same thing will happen in Europe and the U.S. It's only a matter of time.

As far as Obama's ploy, it's only that: A ploy to get more votes. Desperate times call for desperate measures. The handwriting is on the wall for BO, and he's trying everything he can to hold on to power.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Right! - because Congress has really been on the ball with this issue, fulfilling their responsibilities! I

The administration's announcement that it would suspend the deportation of hundreds of thousands of immigrants who were born abroad and came to the United States without authorization as kids has immigration advocates showering hosannas on President Obama. There is another politician, though, who deserves quite a bit of credit for the administration's move: Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio.

Two months ago, Rubio floated a watered down version of the so-called DREAM Act -- and the administration this morning essentially made it the law of the land (at least temporarily).

Rubio's contribution to the DREAM Act debate made it harder to allege the GOP was the "do nothing" party on immigration reform. The senator had been spreading the word in the media that the administration was telling DREAM Act advocates to refrain from working with him on his effort. It put pressure on the administration to shore up its credentials with Latinos, a voting block that could decide whether Colorado, Florida, and Nevada end up in the Red or Blue column this fall. With its announcement Friday, the administration did just that.

Senator Rubio released a statement criticizing the president's decision to bypass Congress in order to make that possible. But make no mistake about it: it was his own effort that helped spur the administration to action, and it has made Rubio the most influential freshman senator serving in the U.S. Congress today.

http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2012/06/want-to-thank-someone-for-obamas-immigration-move-thank-marco-rubio/258580/

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Remember Obamas statement on the issue last year: “The fact of the matter is there are laws on the books that I have to enforce. And I think there’s been a great disservice done to the cause of getting the Dream Act passed and getting comprehensive immigration passed by perpetrating the notion that somehow, by myself, I can go and do these things. It’s just not true,”

Well, that was last year, but now an election needs to be won, and big demographic groups need to be panderend to. So, the laws are all forgotten now, and yes, we can!

Can a political leader really lie so blatantly without being called on it`? Apparently yes.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Those who benefit from this decision are still not able to vote, yet he's trying to placate minorities by increasing competition for jobs with minorities who are able to vote? That is quite a muddled message.

@ Laguana: You are missing one important fact. If he is declaring that they will not be deported without the approval of Congress, then it will be just as easy for him to issue anoter EO that states that children who were brought here illegally by their parents should have the same rights as other citizens and be allowed to vote. Still plenty of time to get them registered befor November. Or, as you state, why else would he ensure that people who can't vote now have their relatives who also can't vote be eligible to remain in the USA.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Sailwind - Rubio has done a great service with his legislation, but getting his own party to accept it proved an impossible task. (Let's also not forget the controversy over his claim that his parents were refugees from Castro, when in fact they left Cuba in 1956 during Batista's rule, three full years before Castro came to power. Still, it sounds good!)

Alphaape, the chief executive has certain authority over how federal law is executed, and Obama has duly exercised this. He has not given them legal status; he has given them breathing room by stating that the federal government under his administration will back off their deportation. Stating he could require that "children who were brought here illegally by their parents should have the same rights as other citizens and be allowed to vote" is simply silly.

gaijininfo: " If people came to America and KNEW that the only way they could get money was to WORK for it, there wouldn't be any problems. " Right, because those people who pick American crops and clean American hotel rooms for what in many cases turns out to be sub-minimum wage still have six or seven hours in a day they could be working when they are in fact sleeping! What an ignorant statement. They are, in any case, prohibited from receiving the vast majority of government welfare funds.

Why are other people having so many problems bringing your foreign spouse to the US? We started the process for hubby's green card in 2009, got the first step approved right away, then when we decided to move in 2010 we did the other step. Medical exam, proof you can support yourselves after moving to the US, and a short interview was all that was needed. The green card was approved and sent 2 months later to the US, and then the social security card followed soon after. No. Problems.

It's only a felony if you don't have money. That's the reality.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Sailwind - Rubio has done a great service with his legislation, but getting his own party to accept it proved an impossible task.

Doesn't sound like it was much of an impossible task at all.

Recognizing that his proposal was never going to be an easy sell for either Republicans or Democrats, Mr. Rubio said in an interview this week that he was moving forward with his plan to give students a chance to study and work here legally, albeit temporarily. The senator said he and his staff had been speaking with Democrats, conservative Republicans in and out of Congress, immigration advocates and the students themselves.

“I don’t want to be unrealistically optimistic about it,” he said, but added, “I have not been discouraged by anybody in my party.”

(Let's also not forget the controversy over his claim that his parents were refugees from Castro, when in fact they left Cuba in 1956 during Batista's rule, three full years before Castro came to power. Still, it sounds good!)

They left in 1957 and Batista was also a corrupt brutal dictator. I understand that Rubio may well be Romney's V.P choice though and one does need to get smears on early to discredit the man, even if Obama stole his immigration bill by "executive order".

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

And so endeth the lesson to moribund those donothing Republican congressmembers obstructing legal reforms to immigration policies. The President of the United States is our Executive in Chief who bears power and responsibility to act with moral authority when the political system is vexed by small minded bickering. Who stands among the American people and says with the spirit of our forebearers..."throw those kids over the border".... because they represent an abomination to our nation.

Glad to hear it went so well for you. But for the other 99% of us the legal immigration process is a nightmare. There is a documentary out there titled "The Naturalized" from one of the cable networks, in it a young man tells how it took him something like 7years and $17,000 to immigrate to the U.S. and become a citizen. It also shows how badly immigration treats a couple where the U.S. citizen husband is trying to get permanent green card status for his immigrant wife, etc.

Obama granting legal status to ANY illegal is a slap in the face to those of us trying to do it the legal way (also to those who have done it the legal way).

They must be in school or have graduated from high school or be honorably discharged from the U.S. military. They also must not have been convicted of any felony or significant misdemeanor offenses.

Graduated from or be in school, they are illegals and that means that taxpayer money is paying for that. Discharged from the U.S. Military . . . How did an illegal get into the military in the first place? But I will allow for this one, if you serve our country you should be allowed in. Not convicted of a crime, well they may not be convicted, but their being in the U.S. illegally is a crime!

This is a ploy to get votes!

From USAToday, July 11, 2011:

President Obama told Hispanics today he is with them on overhauling the nation's immigration laws -- but he won't use executive orders to alter the law on things such as deportations.

"Now, I know some people want me to bypass Congress and change the laws on my own," Obama told members of a National Council of La Raza conference who shouted back, "Yes, you can! Yes, you can!"

"That's not how our democracy functions," Obama responded. "That's not how our Constitution is written."

RR

2 ( +3 / -1 )

How did an illegal get into the military in the first place?

You do not need to be an American citizen to join the US military. If you are not, you can't get a secuirty clearance and thus you are limitied to the jobs you can preform. Also, to be an Officer, you must be a US citizen so the non-citizens can only be in the Enlisted ranks. That is why you see so many Filipino's in the USN. When we had bases in the PI, many joined there provided they could pass the test. After years of service, some became naturlaized and their family memebers also became naturalized.

I don't have a problem with those who have been honorably discharged or are still serving becoming US citizens. What I do have a problem with those who have not, and just wait for some in the government to grant them some amnesty. They have not had any "skin in the game" so to speak but yet are benefiting from the services provided by the US government.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Admittedly, the system is broken We need to fix it. We need to start somewhere. By the way, how soon we forget! Where would most Americans be today if the Native Americans had met our ancestors on the shores and asked to see our papers? What did they do then? Just began a westward advance! Marauding and murdering and taking whatever they wanted, including land!

Thanks for the information and I agree with the quote above 100%. If a person is willing to put their life on the line for the country then they have earned a place in it. But those who come in through the back door and expect everything to handed to them can go back where they came from.

Romney made a pointed effort in his first response to Obama's announcement to include Senator Rubio.

“I’d like to see legislation that deals with this issue,” Romney said. “And I happen to agree with Marco Rubio, as he said this is an important matter, we have to find a long-term solution.”

And Senator Rubio's response in a statement was:

Today’s announcement will be welcome news for many of these kids desperate for an answer, but it is a short term answer to a long term problem. And by once again ignoring the Constitution and going around Congress, this short term policy will make it harder to find a balanced and responsible long term one.

I think we will be seeing a response from Romney's camp soon pointing out the blatant political ploy Obama has done here. Obama did this for fear that Rubio was actually putting together a real bi-partisan deal with his leadership and commitment on this issue , and he couldn't have that. He cynically decided that now was the moment for pure, bold, crystalline pandering.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Ah! How long has the immigration "crisis" been brewing? I seem to remember that Saint Reagan back in '86 gave amnesty to undocumented aliens who were able to prove residency for a certain period - one of my oldest friends is now an American thanks to that. But, wow, how Saint Reagan would be eviscerated for even suggesting such a move now.

So both Romney and Rubio claim that they would like to see a "long-term" solution to this problem. Bravo for them! And welcome to reality, while we're at it! The unfortunate reality for both is that any real, long-term solution will have to incorporate the reality of a million youth who have been raised since childhood in the United States and an angry right wing who would like to repopulate them to somewhere they don't know. Rubio putting together a "bi-partisan deal" on this - in an election year? Sure, and there'll be unicorns an rainbows, too!

It is a short-term answer to a long-term problem, but for those involved, it means they can apply to college and get drivers licenses and do real jobs without the worry of immediate deportation. As for the timing - Congress should have acted on this long ago. When Congress abdicates, Obama acts.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

. When Congress abdicates, Obama acts.

Forgetting that he himself actually once understood that he is President of a Democracy .........Square this circle with pandering he pulled today.

Now, what we can do is to prioritize enforcement, since there are limited enforcement resources, and say we're not going to go chasing after this young man or anybody else who's been acting responsibly and would otherwise qualify for legal status if the DREAM Act passed.

But we live in a democracy. You have to pass bills through the legislature, and then I can sign it. And if all the attention is focused away from the legislative process, then that is going to lead to a constant dead-end. We have to recognize how the system works, and then apply pressure to those places where votes can be gotten and, ultimately, we can get this thing solved. And nobody will be a stronger advocate for making that happen than me.

I seem to remember that Saint Reagan back in '86 gave amnesty to undocumented aliens who were able to prove residency for a certain period -

in 86 you were talking about a few hundred thousand illegals in california. seriously, do you think people miss such obvious points?

state broken people, do you really not know that Reagan was president of the United States in '86, not governor of California? I understand that dates are difficult, but really, Reagan as California Governor and Reagan as President are quite different. Wikkipedia is your firend. By the way, Reagan's law granted amnesty to nearly 3 million illegal immigrants.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Saint Reagan back in '86 gave amnesty to undocumented aliens

Pure nonsense. Unlike The One, Mr. Reagan did not unilaterally issue that amnesty. It was the result of a law passed by both the House and Senate.

For those who obviously don't know how the U.S. government works, according to our Constitution, the executive branch enforces laws passed by the legislative branch. The executive branch does not make laws. The lap dogs within the MSM keep saying/writing over and over that Obama's was a constitutional scholar back in the day. Heh, seems like he should be aware of this little factoid.

RR

0 ( +3 / -3 )

RR, you're right in four ways: the legislative branch wrote the amnesty bill, Reagan both supported it and signed it into law, and conservatives (including yourself) have enforced a collective amnesia about the whole affair.

The fourth way that you are correct is in your mention of Obama's Constitutional scholarship. "Factoid"? - Obama is interpreting how federal law should be implemented. He has the ability to do what he has done. If you don't agree, go cry to the Supremes.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

@Laguna:

Stating he could require that "children who were brought here illegally by their parents should have the same rights as other citizens and be allowed to vote" is simply silly.

No more silly than Obama dictating that illegal immigrants can legally reside in America despite a law from the US Congress that states otherwise. The role of the President of the United States is to faithfully execute the laws passed by Congress. He is stating that he refuses to do what the Constitution states that he must do. This is the definition of an Imperial Presidency.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

What about those young Candians, Europeans, Asians immigrants who have been here illegal and are in the same boat? Does this law only applied to Mexicans? If so then the law discriminate and is racist.

Oh now I understand! The president should not feel constrained to follow the law as written until the Supreme Court overrules him. Now I see how Liberals think.

Agree. People either lack the understanding of how the Constitution work or are just so in love with Obama that he can do no wrong in their eyes. Common sense have gone out the door.

Obama have just added 800,000 people to the unemployment line. He will most likely get the Latino votes. The end justifies the means.

The people are left with a dysfunction government.

Oh, I know this Congress won't call out The One for his abuses of power. It's up to We The People to send this administration on a permanent vacation next January.

Look at all the people who bought Obama's "hope and change."

Yeah. P.T. Barnum was correct. Only this time around Obama now has to defend his dismal record while in office. Blaming Mr. Bush, the EU, the republicans, FOX News, the weather, etc., for his ineffectiveness ain't going to wash with voters in November.

Coincidentally, this article just appeared on CNN; reading it gives an insight into the challenges faced by those brought to the US illegally as children. Ironically, if they'd just waited....

LOL. CNN is so pro Obama. It's not a coincidental. Nothing happens without a reason.

Obama played politics to get re-elected at the expense of the American people.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

The President of the United States is our Executive in Chief who bears power and responsibility to act with moral authority when the political system is vexed by small minded bickering.

Does that applied to Bush or just Obama? There are millions of abortions each year and if Obama is so moral and bears the responsbility then why doesn't he stop babies from being aborted? Those babies have a right to life. Those babies are never given a choice to live. The govenment funds Planned Parenthood where abortions takes place each day.

People who ilegally come to the country have that choice and knows that life won't be easy before hand.

Please don't talk about moral because coming from some liberals is an oxymoron.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

RomeoR: "Sounds more like the definition of an article of impeachment for dereliction of duty."

Actually, what you quote sounds more like intelligible nonsense. Not surprising, though, really.

"True dat. A President cannot just go out and make his own rules. Looks like some people never heard of checks and balances."

Haha! My guess is your memory is selective when it comes to Obama's predecessor.

"Oh, I know this Congress won't call out The One for his abuses of power. It's up to We The People to send this administration on a permanent vacation next January."

Are you guys still SO desperate you have to keep harping on that 'THE ONE' thing that so miserably failed McCain and the dolt Palin? You DO realize it didn't quite pan out for them, right? No one except you guys keeps calling Obama 'The One', so unless you actually feel threatened by him because he might be some entity you seem god-like I think it's high-time you put that one to rest. But of course... I'm talking to RR, right? :)

"Yeah. P.T. Barnum was correct."

Ironically (though not surprising from you), most of the phrases P.T. Barnum made famous were actually stolen from others and not original. Read a bit of history instead of simply misusing sound bites, my friend.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Haha! My guess is your memory is selective when it comes to Obama's predecessor.

At least Obama's predecessor got Congress to approved it. Obama presidency is an extension of Bush's two terms. Therefore, the people got 12 years of Bush under Obama term as president. Obama did not do away with Bush's foreign policy and domestic policy. Anyone who believes otherwise is fooling themselves.

It's ironic that those who dislike Bush, but like Obama and defends his policies when he is just like Bush. Lol.

He secured about 50,000,000 votes right there. I like Mexicans, I really do. They are my favourite non-Asian and non-white people in the world. Such attractive women. But I don't support them coming illegally.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

This also gave me a mixed reaction. I like the fact that if certain requirements are met the children that were dragged along with their parents while hopping the border should not be blamed for their parents actions. At the same time I'd approve more of the "illegal" aliens that just happened to overstay their visas compared to the majority of mexican nationals that don't even have a visa to start with. Really mixed feelings on this.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Mexico, Mexico, Mexico! Calm down everyone! Please read the first posting by konjo4u! Not all illegals are Mexican! Not all are even of Hispanic origin! Take a chill pill!

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Everyone, this is just temporary, not permanet. US needs to look at a successful immigration model practiced in Canada and Australia.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Mexico, Mexico, Mexico! Calm down everyone!

This is very true. The largest group of illegals are Mexican. The largest by race/ethnicity are Hispanics. This isn't a race issue for those that think that immigration should be handled in an orderly and lawful fashion. For those that support open borders this is a racial issue for them. As ridiculous as it sounds, opposing illegal immigration is racist in their eyes.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Again, everyone, not every illegal alien is deferred. I am posting the qualifications listed below. Again, this is just a temporary solution until the US congress decide what they want to do. The illegal (parents) immigrants will not qualify for automatic deferred treatment.

http://www.dhs.gov/ynews/releases/20120612-napolitano-announces-deferred-action-process-for-young-people.shtm

1.Came to the United States under the age of sixteen;

3.Are currently in school, have graduated from high school, have obtained a general education development certificate, or are honorably discharged veterans of the Coast Guard or Armed Forces of the United States;

4.Have not been convicted of a felony offense, a significant misdemeanor offense, multiple misdemeanor offenses, or otherwise pose a threat to national security or public safety;

I see solution to the issue. US needs to adopt a model of immigration policy from Canada and Australia.

For Obama to bypass Congress is what he does best. The reason this is a temporary thing is to get the Latino votes. Correction those two should be added to the previous comment. Those two are way too the right for my comfort, and they are the opposite. Not all Republicans believe in "morality." How the Republican mind works:

Rubio issued a statement Friday calling the announcement "welcome news for many of these kids desperate for an answer," but arguing that it could derail legislation on the issue.

Huh? Obama issues an EO that entirely dovetails with Rubio's proposed bill, and he thinks it could derail legislation? How come?

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) may decide not to introduce his planned legislation on undocumented youth in light of President Barack Obama's announcement on deportations, an aide for the senator confirmed Friday.

Wait! The problem with an EO is precisely that it is NOT legislation! Obama meant to give breathing room for these people while Congress worked through their process:

"I've said time and time and time again to Congress, send me the Dream Act, put it on my desk, and I will sign it right away," Obama said. "Both parties wrote this legislation."

So why would Rubio abandon his baby?

The Rubio aide confirmed that the senator may not introduce his bill because he believes the politics are now more difficult.

More difficult? A Republican bill backed by the support of a Democratic president gets more difficult? Oh, wait - I get it. Now that Obama is on record being FOR it, the GOP must automatically be AGAINST it.

Too bad, but there is a silver lining for Rubio: his shedding of whatever sane ideas he once stood for puts him one step closer to being Romney's running mate.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Wait, so these people who would normally walk out of a hospital without paying a dime with no social security number are now able to become legal, get a job, get insurance, and pay into the fund?

Well I'm certainly against that.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Actually, scratch my last post.

I honestly have no idea how it works anymore.

From the article:

For 18-year-old high school honors graduate Yolanda Medina, in Phoenix, Arizona, the rule change means a shot at studying at the city’s Grand Canyon University in the fall and the chance to escape a life toiling in menial jobs open to illegal immigrants.

So by becoming a citizen she now has a shot at college? But before that...

said Justino Mora, 22, an undocumented computer science student at UCLA in Los Angeles.

UCLA? Not too shabby.....but if he got in why can't Yolanda?

I'm honestly to the point where I have no idea what an undocumented person can and cannot do. Driver's License? College? Welfare? Work? Health insurance? Social Security?

Generally speaking, I'm of the opinion that if there are here and if they've been here a long time it's easier to make them citizens and get them paying into the system like everyone else. There's zero change of making a dent in removing them and with that reality the solution should be more practical than idealistic.

After that's done, then make the laws extremely strict on undocumented people. Each time you make becoming a citizen easier then make the penalty for not taking advantage of the system more and more severe. Let the ones already in stay, get them legal, then focus on a much smaller pool of people who refuse to follow the rules in the future.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Superlib,

Did a little research on this.

Under Arizona law Yolanda could attend Grand Canyon University but without proof of citizenship is not eligible for in-state tuition status or financial aid that is funded or subsidized by state monies. It will be very expensive for her to attend college there.

Under California law Justino as an undocumented student would have had to attended a state high school for three or more years, to have graduated from a state high school, and to sign an affidavit promising to file an application to legalize his immigration status to be considered a "resident" for California's student aid programs and in state tuition.

Short term politics aside, I also agree with most of your post for the long term solution.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

This is just Obama pandering for the Hispanic vote. Take a look at this information about California from a California source.

From the Los Angeles Times Newspaper

40% of all workers in Los Angeles County (Los Angeles County has 10.2 million people) are working for cash and not paying taxes. This is because they are predominantly illegal aliens working without a green card. 95% of warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens. 75% of people on the most-wanted list in Los Angeles are illegal aliens. Over 2/3 of all births in Los Angeles County are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal, whose births were paid for by taxpayers.**** Nearly 35% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally. Over 300,000 illegal aliens in Los Angeles County are living in garages. The FBI reports half of all gang members in Los Angeles are most likely illegal aliens from south of the border. Nearly 60% of all occupants of HUD properties are illegal. 21 radio stations in Los Angeles are Spanish speaking. In Los Angeles County 5.1 million people speak English, 3.9 million speak Spanish. (There are 10.2 million people in Los Angeles County .)

(All 10 of the above statements are from the Los Angeles Times)

Don't even try to tell me that illegal aliens are harmless people just trying to get ahead in life. The are a drain on the U.S. economy. Taking far more from the government than they pay in. Taking jobs from citizens (the people who employ them need to be the ones who are locked up). Tell me honestly if these things were happening in Tokyo would the people or the government allow it?

She conceded that there were no such data in official reports but suggested the LAPD "top brass" was hiding the truth. I called the LAPD's press office, which contacted the department's Fugitive Warrant Section. Officers confirmed that the statistics in item No. 2 and No. 3, which follows, don't exist.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Huh? Obama issues an EO that entirely dovetails with Rubio's proposed bill, and he thinks it could derail legislation? How come?

Pretty simple, as Senator Rubio pointed out in May.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said the White House is trying to sabotage his version of the DREAM Act by “ordering” activists not to work with him so that President Obama can maintain his hold on the Latino vote in the 2012 election.

“One of the things that already been documented is that the White House has been — the articles that have been written, two or three by now, the White House has been calling in DREAM Act advocates and asking them, almost ordering them, not to work with me on this issue,” Rubio said Thursday on the Laura Ingraham radio show. “They have been counting on using this issue as a wedge issue in October to drive up turnout.”

http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/226775-rubio-white-house-ordering-activists-not-to-work-with-me-on-dream-act

Obama and the Democrats use division and class warfare as the way and only means in politics. Now that Obama has bypassed Rubio's plan by E.O, they have no incentive at all to work out a compromise with him on this which is exactly why they did it this way. They want nothing at all to do with the word Republican on an immigration reform law passed by congress. They need to demonize Republicans as anti-immigration and anti-minority. It is what they do best and Obama just once again showed he's more about division then inclusion. He could have very well reached out and signaled when Rubio started to work on his version of the Dream act that his administration would back his efforts but that isn't this Presidents style.

@laguna I am big enough to admit my mistake in printing information that was not verified (it came from what was a trusted source). However the corrected statistics are still telling . . . 200,000 living in garages, living without proper sanitation it must smell horrible. 27% of the births is still 27% too much for the taxpayers to be paying for. The prison population is still at least 10% more than it needs to be at the taxpayers expense. As for the radio stations, it's a free market economy and if it supports them OK. Speaking Spanish is OK in your home or between friends, but stop wasting taxpayer money by demanding all services be duplicated in Spanish. Tell me does Japan do that for any other language???

Here are a couple of telling links from Maricopa County the location of Phoenix, Arizona.

http://www.mcso.org/Patrol/Statistics.aspx

Sheriff’s detention officers have turned over 45,173 illegal immigrants to Immigration authorities for deportation.

This is just one county in one state in the U.S.!

http://www.mcso.org/Patrol/Immigration.aspx

MCSO’s General Investigation Division has investigated numerous homicides where the victims were suspected to have been murdered while being smuggled into this country. It is our experience that human smugglers tend to be ruthless having no respect or value for human life. MCSO’s Special Investigation Division has interdicted numerous shipments of illegal drugs hauled through the desert on the backs of illegal aliens. Groups of 10 to 15 illegal aliens can carry up to 500 pounds of marijuana in at a time.

These are the people that Obama calls harmless and is letting into the U.S. by suing the State of Arizona to prevent the state from preventing illegal immigration. I can't help but wonder how many of the children he just gave green cards to are the children of the people described in the quotes I just made.

These are the people that Obama calls harmless and is letting into the U.S.....

People under 30 years of age who can document years of peaceful, productive lives in America are who Obama is allowing to stay in the United States. You need to understand what has happened and think before you post.

Laguna,

"I've said time and time and time again to Congress, send me the Dream Act, put it on my desk, and I will sign it right away," Obama said. "Both parties wrote this legislation."

Obama is referring to original DREAM ACT bill not Senator Rubio's proposed legislation, he's derailed Rubio's version for good now and never had any intention of working with him or the republicans on this. Mission accomplished for the Democrats and saving a wedge issue for them, but not for the nation at all. Obama even when he has a golden chance to unify the country on a really difficult issue goes the other route.

The Republicans have been reaching out to hispanic community and seeking their support. Rubio's effort was at the forefront of that. This is an election year and on this issue the republicans were ripe to concede and compromise on lesser version of the original DREAM act to bolster that outreach effort. President Obama and his administration could have seized on that and showed the nation that it was quite possible to work with the republicans and achieve real compromise and some very contentious issues and set the tone for how the next four years of an Obama administration actually would be like. It would have actually bolster his chances for re-election if he would have chosen this route in my opinion, independents who have been leaving him in droves would actually give him a different look if he could actually showed that he gets how to Govern. But it just isn't in this Presidents DNA. Rather divide and demonize rather than work and compromise and here was a golden shot at a good compromise when the moment and timing was actually matching up in both parties for some real long term overdue breakthrough Immigration reform. Now there is no way that any sane Republican is now going to try and work with a President on immigration now when he has decided that by executive degree trumps Democratic governance and everything else just to gain political pandering points with his base instead of the for the actual good of the whole nation. It would be asking the Republicans to approve of a by decree Presidency and that sure isn't going to happen. Or to put it in a better context It would be like asking the Democrats if Romney was elected after he issued an E.O that he wasn't going to enforce the penalties in the Tax Code if the rich don't pay taxes because those obstructionist Democrats just won't compromise on his economic legislation.

They must be in school or have graduated from high school or be honorably discharged from the U.S. military. They also must not have been convicted of any felony or significant misdemeanor offenses.

Just because a person has not been convicted of a crime does NOT mean the are not a criminal, it just means that they have never been caught. Go to any website about Latin American family traditions and you will read that children typically follow in their parents footsteps.

In school or graduated, these are the same kids who tear down the U.S. flag and replace it with Mexico's at a U.S. public school, the same kids who sing the U.S. National Anthem in Spanish, The same kids who had an American student expelled from school for wearing a T-shirt with the U.S. flag on it on Cinco-de-Mayo a few years back. The same students who expect their education to be all in Spanish in a country where the traditional language is English, to me that proves that the don't want to assimilate.

Honorably discharged from the U.S. military. No problem there, if a person is willing to put his life on the line for a country then they have earned a fast-track to citizenship. And that comes with provable documentation of education and no criminal convictions.

At age 18 in the U.S. a person is expected to know the difference between right and wrong. These adult children know that they are in another country ILLEGALLY and choose to flaunt the law and continue to stay. ILLEGAL is ILLEGAL!!! And Obama want to reward them for ignoring our laws??? Makes him just as guilty as the illegals!

I believe we need to consider comprehensive immigration model of Canada and Australia as I listed above. We need to encorage high skilled immigrants to stay in USA. Lazy Americans with no skill, no educations can stay at jobs where they are flipping burgers. America is a very competitive place, if these low skilled immigrants; except agricultural migrating workers), are thinking to come to US for easy break in life, they need to stay where they are.

@globalwatcher

Ask an Australian person what he/she thinks of all the Lebanese coming to Australia. Ask them about that riot a few years ago. You're painting a picture that isn't there. Actually ask a Canadian about their views of Muslim immigrants and honour killings.

I am a Native America, from the Wyandotte tribe of Oklahoma. Having seen the government in action, and knowing how they opperate. I am not surprised at President Obama,s speach or actions. Will he be re-elected? Not by me or my friends. I am not happy with how he has "pushed" his authority around. However, in a democracy we must follow our leader, and bare the burden. From war to shinning war, and from sea to shinning sea, from illegal to lies and misconduct. It's business as usual. The transcontinental railroad brought more non-Natives into tribal land in the west. Over time, the U.S. forced a series of treaties and land cessions by the tribes, and established reservations for them in many western states. U.S. agents encouraged Native Americans to adopt European-style farming and similar pursuits, but European-American agricultural technology of the time was inadequate for often dry reservation lands. In 1924, Native Americans who were not already U.S. citizens were granted citizenship by Congress. Now the President has assumed this reponsibility. Were is Congress now? And were will they put them? On illegal Immagrant lands? If they do what they did to my people, well then..., Welcome to Oklahoma!

obama: ‘This notion that somehow I can just change the laws unilaterally is just not true.’

this president just lies and lies and lies

Obama doesn't need the laws - He is the law. He doesn't need the Constitution - He is the Constitution! He is the great and all powerful Barack Hussein (aka "Barry) Obama. He makes the seas stop rising and the sun cool. He provides all that a citizen could possibly need from birth to the grave. He is more than a man, more than a mere president. He is the Chosen One, the Messiah! In 2008, the American people professed their faith in the Chosen One and he can do no wrong. If He proclaims the illegal to be legal; who dares to challenge the word of the Almighty?

OK a little hyperbole there - but this is apparently how Obama sees the world. When democracy get's too difficult, he just makes his own rules.

@Walfpack, how so?

Mexico deports illegals from their country. The U.S. should do the same. Obama seems to be facing a tight election. This might garner the scumbag some new and much needed votes.

*****Elbuda MexicanoJUN. 16, 2012 - 07:44AM JST So some of my cousins, aunts, uncles, neighbors etc...can finally wrok and live in peace and try their luck with the so called American Dream?? I think it is good, because, if it is a law to help young people who are going to school, going to do good for themselves and for their families, great. Now, the other side of the coin, how many US CITIZENS are gang members?

Its easy for you to make such a statement because you are no different from the other mexicans in the US. If you look at the numbers there have been more mexican citizens killed in mexico over drug violence than in both both wars the US fought. Here you have a country like JAPAN that was bombed to pieces and the rebuilt the second largest economy. With the corruption in Mexico and spreading to the US its easy for you to say its good. Mexico should clean u the corruption and take care their own, if Mexico was such a great place you would still be in that backwards country. So don't throw stones at the US and send your people here for freebies, all it takes is one Japan and the entire country will be there speaking spanish and not Japanese.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Obama is only letting young illegals to stay in America if they were brought here as children by their illegal immigrant parents, guys.

These are the type of people Obama is letting stay. Especially if they have attended school here and plan to achieve higher education or have a job without commiting any major crime.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Republicans blocked the Dream Act, so what they they expect? You cannot have it both ways.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

I just noticed ONE "native American" making a statement... Don't forget that, unless you're a "Red Indian" you are all also the offspring of illegal immigrants...

4 ( +5 / -1 )

I'm red, I like to think "always tan". My grandfather was born on the reservation, as was my mother. But I would love to visit Japan, as I have been learning japanese.

Making them citizens will increase the tax revenue. Now these so-called illegals will be registered and bound to the same rules. I don't think this is a human rights issue at all. It's just pre-election tactics to get the Hispanic vote sealed up. Money and votes people.

As of today (6/19/12) per CBS and ABC, the biggest immigrant group is from Asian countries; China, India, Philippines, Vietnam and Japan. 49% of these immigrants are college graduates, and many of them have a PhD degree in sience and engineering. Most of them are settling around US auto manufacturing belt, Arizona, Nevada and Texas. Their average income is $66,000, FYI

jforce Jun. 20, 2012 - 09:11AM JST Making them citizens will increase the tax revenue.

These people should wait in line like everybody else. They don't deserve to cut in front of the line and have shortcut to permanent stay in U.S. The U.S. goverment should take hard line and deport these people immediately. What their parents did was illegal and they broke the law. Now you are saying we should reward these people that continues to break the law. These illegal immigrants are part of the rising health care problem and the hospitals should stop refusing to serve these people that are illegal.

Settling around US auto manufacturing belt? Where? The only auto manufacturing plant on these three states is in San Antonio Texas with Toyota Plant. If you didn't know, the auto manufacturing belt is in Midwest area, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Kentucky, and Tennessee area.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

@sfjp330, Indiana has many auto parts vendors.

Dog gone right they should. I called the immigration service phone center to check on the status of my wife's application and the automated answering system was giving priority to these people already. In the mean time my wife will have to wait and wait and wait . . .

You sure did! But then maybe you're not familiar with the so-called pilgrims? Escaping to the "New World" from "problems" in their original countries, taking over the land and killing the natives of the "New World" they finally arrived in?

What's the three downvotes? I didn't understand the bit I quoted...

Yes, I do. But many here are not ALL illegal immigrants. Many go through legal procedures to obtain a citizenship.

He's saying that unless you are Native American you are all illegal immigrants or their descendants.

That is not entirely correct. In the early days of colonization of North America many Native Americans welcomed the settlers. Well maybe not MANY but some tribes did welcome the newcomers.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

How can one be an illegal immigrant when there is no government in place to speak of? It's when you violate the law that you become 'illegal'.
