What have the Taliban been doing for the last ten years? Just waiting for this moment?

At Burning Bush. Not the guys in this picture, but I have seen others where the faces of the men with thick beards might prove as a positive curtailment of the virus and the women are totally covered so could not even spread contagious skin ailments, so this might be a fantastic case study for a Ph.D. candidate.

George W Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld all failed in Afghanistan and left their successors with a huge mess to deal with. They compounded their error by starting a war with Iraq, creating yet another long term mess, instead of using those forces to occupy every corner of Afghanistan and root out the Tailban. They made it even worse by not disarming and disbanding every warlord in Afghanistan and their militias. Trusting a warlord at Tora Bora to secure the border with Pakistan was a huge mistake. Gen James Mattis wanted to use Marines to do that but the Army was in charge and the Marines were told to stand aside. We know now that bin Laden simply paid that warlord more than the US was paying them to let him slip away into Pakistan. The Taliban should have been defeated and destroyed in a year, two at the max and US forces withdrawn by the end of George W. Bush's first term. Instead we had 8 years of W fooling around in Iraq and no focus on destroying the Taliban. Those mistakes combined with nobody wanting to be accused of defeat set the stage for where we are today. There are no good choices left for the US and you can thank Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld for this situation.

The only thing up for negotiation is which lightpost in Kabul the government reps will be hanged from. The Taliban have always said this. They know they will be disappointed that the richest and most corrupt of the government officials will be able to escape from the country and live like kings elsewhere in the world.

Like in the movie Darkest Hour when Churchill says:

"You cannot reason with a tiger when your head is in its mouth!"

So true. It's the same problem here.

…in a short time, both sides will reach a result and we will witness a durable and dignified peace…

The winner takes it all. Every child knows that line out of a famous pop song. That means practically in that region there, neither two sides nor peace.

Trump had a withdrawal deal worked out for May, and the BIden regime totally botched it by first reneging on the deal and then stupidly announcing a unilateral withdrawal date for September. It is hard to get more incompetent than that.

The Taliban have capitalized on the last stages of the withdrawal of U.S. and other foreign troops from Afghanistan to launch a series of lightning offensives across the country.

Poorly done withdrawal, giving the Taliban advance details of when, where, and what.

The UK spent £22.2billion in Afghanistan in its supporting role. Biden announced the date of the American troop withdrawal.
