My Tara only barks then runs away. Attack dogs risk counter-attack fights to the death.

Oh my goodness! I'm glad the man is okay, but he really should have had the dog on a leash maybe. I'm glad no one killed the kangaroo either, that would have been a bit tragic, since it was obviously just trying to defend itself.

And people complain that there is too much violence on TV! They should take their dog for a walk on the wild side.

Any kangaroos around me, they get smashed!

[I'm glad no one killed the kangaroo either, that would have been a bit tragic, since it was obviously just trying to defend itself.] --- I think that once these things smell blood they become dangerous killers and humans and their pets are not safe anymore. Not like there aren't too many to cull this new killer with the taste for human blood.

Thinking off the top of your head is usually not a good thing.

From Wikipedia - The only reliably documented case of a fatality from a kangaroo attack occurred in New South Wales, in 1936. A hunter was killed when he tried to rescue his two dogs from a heated fray. Other suggested causes for erratic and dangerous kangaroo behaviour include extreme thirst and hunger. In 2003, Lulu, an Eastern Grey, saved a farmer's life by alerting family members to his location when he was injured by a falling treebranch. She received the RSPCA National Animal Valor Award on 19 May 2004

Skippy's gone wild. I was so interested to read the story hoping the dog was a Collie, Skippy VS Lassie The final battle.

Lovely animals and pretty smart for luring others to water to drown them. Big legs on those suckers too. Make for wonderful burgs too. Roo Cheese Burgers

This guy walking his dog with out a leash sounds like an idiot, waking up a wild, sleeping animal, in this case a 5 foot kangaroo, is just asking for trouble, and well both he and his dog both got trouble from the poor roo just trying to defend itself, they are wild animals, so do not be surprised mates.

Growing up in rural Australia, I still remember seeing old film footage of kangaroo/human boxing events, and old blokes telling us stories about kangaroos chasing people.

I also remember being put up a tree by a big red kangaroo after my cousin shot it with a pellet gun.

For those posters who have not been to Aussie should know that a phrase such as "Arthurs Creek, north of Melbourne" indicates the wilds. People do not walk dogs on a leash in this enviroment. And I have never, ever seen a Blue Heeler on a leash, anywhere. A blue heeler is a cattle dog. 5 foot is not so big for a Kangaroo. Try taking on a western Australia Red! Now they are BIG!

Sounds like a pretty vicious little scrap there. Am glad no one was hurt too badly, and that all three creatures in the scrap recover completely.

bushlover: " I think that once these things smell blood they become dangerous killers and humans and their pets are not safe anymore."

Where do you come up with this stuff? It may be the case for some species, but not for kangaroos. What's more, while no one can really be said to have been in the wrong here, the kangaroo is CERTAINLY not in the wrong for what it did.

when they surprised a sleeping kangaroo in Arthur’s Creek northeast of Melbourne. The dog chased the animal into a pond, when the kangaroo turned and pinned the pet underwater.

ha ha, the dog deserve it.

I never thought they were attackers at all. This story's got me. I hope if I ever come up on a Kangaroo it will smell that I'm a vegetarian and understand that I had no part in its family being made into Mac Burgers.....

Skip: YOU didn't think they were attackers; the startled kangaroo might have. Most kangaroos won't care one way or the other if someone comes up to them unless it's by surprise, or in this case by surprise with a dog that then proceeds to chase them.

And I don't think they find their way into McDonald's burgers, my friend. McDonald's isn't even that high quality :)

Seriously, though, there shouldn't really be much to confuse you about the story: man was walking dog, they came across a sleeping kangaroo, kangaroo felt threatened when dog attacked, kangaroo fought back. Everyone lived, and hopefully all involved learned a thing or two.

And I don't think they find their way into McDonald's burgers, my friend. McDonald's isn't even that high quality" Oh, so that was just a rumor? Never even seen a Kangaroo in the wild, just a zoo. I'm not the outdoors, hiking type.

Funny how an attempt at sarcastic humor brings out the disturbed bunch. Get a life please.

Sounds like self-defense on the part of the cangaroo to me.

What was this idiot doing, allowing his mutt to attack large wild animals?

spudman, fabulous point! LOL

With some posters, it's hard to distinguish between an attempt at sarcastic humour and their usual fare. It would be nice if JT would let us use smilies (proper ones, not sideways faces) or different colours to indicate attempts at sarcastic humour.

"Kangaroo tries to drown dog"

It's just a cryin' shame that no one got this on video.

From the information here, sounds like the kangaroo was just trying to protect itself from Rocky and his owner.

Still killing kangaroos should be done with more enthusiasm. The bloody things are a pest and should learn to fear man and his best friend. I think they'd make good dog food as well.

Roos are natural inhabitants, as well as dingos and other things Bush. The usual suspects aren't the animals... its the other people that encroach on their habitat and throw the ecosystem out of whack. Aside from that, the owner should have his pet on a lead/leash or w/e you wanna call it. Pretty smart case of evolution for a kangaroo to actually learn to do murder 1 by drowning...
