"My big concern is that younger people are losing interest in all of this and it won't be the same in the future."
Nothing will be the same in the future, that’s how the future works.
‘1,000 years of pageantry’ is a millisecond in the history of our planet.
Stephen Chin
Today, 6th May 2023, the Prince of Wales and Carmilla Parker-Bowles are crowned King Charles the Third and Queen Carmilla of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.
theResident
It was bloody wonderful. As I think those who watched it will all agree.
@Stephen: He hasn’t been The Prince Of Wales since his Mother died, and she hasn’t been CAMILLA Parker-Bowles for many years now,
wallace
Religion, rites, superstition, God, obedience.

when the queen died Charles became king and William the Prince of Wales.

…and the Protesters in Yellow? Irrelevant Parasites. Disloyal to their very roots. Toss them out, take away their citizenship and let them find solace in a Republic of their choice.
Laguna
Best luck to both. They're going to need it.
Fighto!
Umm - you do realize they are British born and bred right? You don't accept protests?
Anyway, good luck to King Charles 3 and Camilla. His heir apparent son William has the shiniest, cue-ball like head I've ever seen. Almost blinded by the light off his head!
rcch
Two words: good luck.

outrageous and fascist statements to even suggest British citizens should lose their citizenship because you don't agree with them. Someone who was born British and has no other nationality cannot be deprived of their citizenship in any circumstances.
Many people died fighting for freedom and for the right to protest.
GreenPeas
Protestors, 4th pic down. Nice use of the apostrophe.

All that money spent on robes instead of feeding the thousands of homeless in England.
gokai_wo_maneku
Time to get rid of these old institutions. They are irrelevant to democracy and just waste tax money.
Bob Fosse
Watched it from Japan did you?
wallace
There are Brits who think Brits living overseas should lose their citizenship.
Dr Maybe
Agree with the above three posters completely.
I really think this could be the last such event in the UK. Real world problems are growing worse all the time, without a realistic solution in sight (unless you somehow believe that multi-national & banking fat cat parasites are suddenly going to decide to act decently ...ha ha ha). British standard of living is going to continue to nose dive down the toilet in the coming years.
1789... 1917... Ring any bells?? It can happen again. Don't kid yourself. (Of course Charlie could transfer, say, 2 billion pounds of his massive wealth to spending on the public good -NHS etc.- and still have the same amount tucked away for himself, but I don't see him having the wisdom to do that.)

The important truth is that this royal family do not create or protect human rights in the UK, they do not uphold or write political law, they pay no taxes, nor do they manage the monetary banking system in the UK. They are merely a postcard family with a flag that sells at tourist stalls.
The real truth about this royal family fits the comment above. As opposed to the protestors who uphold our freedom of speech.
Paustovsky
The average age of the crowds watching tells you everything you need to know. It looks like Wimbledon. The type of old dears who went to Spain once and got an upset tummy.
These parasites have got 2 generations at best.
Mr Kipling
A national embarrassment. It's 2023! We no longer need a hereditary, consanginious, family as a so-called figure head.
Charles the last.
Not my king.
Madverts
Even as a Brit I'm uninterested in this pompous poop. I guess they're good for tourists.
Oh, and they should have paid for it instead of the serfs. It is the only thing I find offensive - well, they should pay taxes also...
englisc aspyrgend
Irrelevant.
And the last one was in the aftermath of a world war, the country still struggling to recover and swathes of the cities still bomb sites and still enduring rationing. The one before that was after a constitutional crisis and with another world war looming
This ceremony with roots over a thousand years old reaching back in part to the coronation of the Anglo-Saxon kings is a symbol of and confirmation of continuity, a part of the enduring, flexible, and stable societal structure that ensures the rights of every citizen.
While at the monument in other parts of the world there are riots, murders and outright war as politicians squabble over the presidency, change happens here without a shot or harm to any. Something to be proud of I would say.

Most democracies have either some sort of monarch/president, an upper house and a lower house.
And not including the US and France, the monarch/president sometimes has a different name and is largely ceremonial or has little to no power. Can anyone name the prime minister of France, the president of Germany or the governor general of Canada?
Bob Fosse
The right to protest the coronation was far from ensured and stable. The right to eat from food banks and cheer a gold carriage is alive and well though if you like that sort of thing.
Jimizo
I’d avoid using the word ‘parasites’ when defending the royals.
Open goal.
englisc aspyrgend
I couldn’t disagree with you more. We are not a dictatorship, we are a liberal democracy, indeed we were a liberal, comparatively tolerant country long before we were a full democracy. I am proud to say in this country people can hold what ever opinion they choose, no matter how wrong it may be.
englisc aspyrgend
About as wrong as possible, someone who patently does not know what they are writing about, not only do they pay tax but the rest is not part of their job or are you advocating that they should rule as well as reign, giving them back autocratic power like Pooh bear and poo tin?
ClippetyClop
I doubt it.
Brits have seen how foreign nations reguarly destroy themselves every generation or three (French, Italians), decide to massacre their neighbours (Germans, Russians, French, Japanese), periodically slaughter their own people en masse (Chinese, Russians, Americans) or go politically insane for a while (Americans, Germans, French, Japanese) and don't particuarly want to do that. Did I forget anyone?
So we'll probably be doing this for another thousand years. And we quite enjoy it. Annoying, eh.
Weather was perfect.
Jtsnose
Congratulations to his Royal Highness, . . . we wish him well on his becoming King!
Jimizo
Oh him. Pay your taxes.
Ridiculous organization. Founded on the family values of Henry the Eighth.
Peter Neil
Ah, come on, lads. The man was raised in Essex by a poor, single mum. He delivered coal and newspapers to help and studied hard in rough schools.
Joined the navy at 15 and worked down in the engine room then got out and opened a bakery, pulling himself up by his bootstraps to eventually have two shops.
He did it the old-fashioned way - he earned it.
cleo
Certainly not a monarchist, no way I’m going to be ‘pledging allegiance’, and I totally support the right of the yellow protesters to protest as loudly as they like.
But when I look at the awful heads of state other countries manage to land themselves with, from bloodstained dictators who readily exterminate any and all opposition to pathetic flag-huggers who conspire to overthrow the legitimate government when they get voted out, I think there’s a lot to be said for the UK’s non-political, toothless royals.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching the pomp and pageantry as it unfolded during the day, and even made a Coronation Quiche and Coronation Trifle for our dinner.
History, tradition, pomp and circumstance… it’s all good. And no one does it as well as us Brits.
Rodney
The crown doesn’t even fit.
Jimizo
Depends on who ends up with the bill.
falseflagsteve
I’m British but I didn’t watch it, no way Pedro, lol
I find it all silly and stuffy, bread and circuses for the blue rinses, the gammon and the easily led. I don’t hate any of the Royal Family personally, well maybe Paedo Andrew but it means nothing to me at all, didn’t even when I lived in UK.
TigersTokyoDome
So what exactly is their "job"? Which was my point.
Oh I see. They 'reign'...

I find that particular historical fact interesting, in its timing.
American patriots find themselves presently in a very similar situation
as those colonists- Not against England, or King George III,
but something much closer to home...
Peter Neil
I liked the part with the horses.

Good show, old bean.

WASTE of Time, Energy, Resources, and most of all Money. The people of the UK are in need of every pound, mothers and kids are on the brink of starvation can't buy there basic food and pay their energy bills while Mr. Charles wanting to be Crowned.
starpunk
British veterans fought and served for that right and so did many here in the US. I've heard this 'love it or leave' crap in America by chickenhawks, armchair generals, and lippy neo-fascists here in the USA. They ran their Pac-Man motormouths about all the protersters who demonstrated against racism, police brutality, TraitorTrump and especially wars. And many of those jokers aren't/weren't mature enough to serve in our military in the first place! Then their hero tRump and his supporters did that violent J6 coup attempt because they're not man enough to accept an election defeat. So who are the 'Parasites'?
Just like the USA, the UK is a democracy and Brits have a right to protest all this outdated trivial pennyante pomp and rubbish. That's their prerogative.
ZENJI
For me, the Imperial Crowning was more of an event.
Moira
How ridiculous.
Ah_so
Penny Mordaunt looking quite fetching in that blue dress.
lostrune2
Congrats to the Brits and the Brits here
N. Knight
Fair enough opinion.
But he's absolutely my King... And this is the opinion of about 70% of the British public. Loved the coronation. Long Live the King!
Paul
Queen Elizabeth must be turning in her grave!!!
Paul
Asking the public to swear allegiance is outright ridiculous!!!
sangetsu03
Asking the public to swear allegiance is outright ridiculous!!!
Britain is a society of “subjects,” not “citizens.” On the positive side, they are being “asked” to swear allegiance, in the old days they were ordered. The consequences of not obeying were severe.
N. Knight
Why? It wasn't mandatory and plenty of people were happy to have the opportunity to do that.
N. Knight
And yet the British public manage to buy and consume over 100 million pints of beer over the coronation weekend.
I don't know where the peasants find the money!
N. Knight
Ha! There's been republicans in the UK for centuries. But they are only a problem when they go full "Ollie Cromwell" and try to impose their views on a majority that don't agree with them.
The protesters had the right to protest yesterday, which was fine. The ones that got arrested were the ones that tried to disrupt the enjoyment majority of the people.
(i.e. "I don't like something so no one else should either!")
wallace
I wager the majority didn't swear allegiance they just released gas.
Dr.Cajetan Coelho
Congratulations. Getting on the front foot to serve one's flock is the foremost opportunity in a fast changing world. Wishing the king and the queen strength and stamina.

Penny Mordaunt was Imperious in her role - just topping off a simply wonderful that showed what a wonderful multi cultural, diverse, welcoming society the UK has become yet maintaining ancient traditions that make the UK and Commonwealth truly special rather than being some 'Republic' where the Head of State is usually some corrupt, rotten individual. Like many of the countries that chose to lose the UK monarch as Head of State.
God Save The King!

And what a shame the Liverpool Supporters once had to show disrespect again yesterday. Ship the lot of them back to the Emerald Isle and be shot of them.
Meredith Brooks
and a total waste of money.

If someone became a citizen, even with other citizenships or nationalities, they should be able to retain their citizenship. It shouldn't be do something good, win it; do something bad, lose it. If they earned their citizenship, they should keep it, regardless. If they commit a crime or such, they should face the consequences that other citizens, natural born or not, receive.
桜川雪
Republics have this problem too. They just wear suits and ties. Perhaps a nordic model (with a figurehead monarch) is more to your liking?
桜川雪
At least the kids don't need to do it every day at school, as in some countries ("I pledge allegiance to the flag...").
桜川雪
Continued: Yes, voluntary too now, but peer pressure.

Sumptuous...... is the right word....over 100 million pounds of taxpayers money for one of the richest men that ever lived ! Long live the king.....at our expense !

It wasn't all Liverpool supporters, just a section. If you knew your football history, you would know that Catholics, including the Irish, would support Everton, not Liverpool who traditionally would have been Protestants (or protesters if you like), But nonetheless, British cities were built on the sweat of the Irish Paddies.
More about Liverpool being shown disrespect by the Tory government.

Couldn't give a toss ot be honest @wallace. Never been that far North, and never will.

You are lifting your skirt and showing your prejudice.
The original inhabitants of these Isles before the Romans were the Celts, The Welsh, the Irish, Scottish, and not the Anglo-Saxon mobs.
Shame you would not visit the many beautiful places of the north, like the Lake District or the Yorkshire Dales or some of the best beaches in Europe like Formby.
u_s__reamer
All the ritualistic mummery of the coronation and the flummery from the media cannot hide the fact that the over-the-top religious service and symbols no longer convince the unbelieving majority of the Brits, or even the royalists themselves and, if I read the body language correctly, the coronation was something of an ordeal for the tense and self-conscious Charles himself while his retiring queen seemed distracted and at times even showed signs of bemusement. The only conclusion to be drawn from this day is that the age of "the divine right of kings", no matter how it is surreptitiously presented in modern garb, has long passed its sell-by date.

Noblesse oblige. Congratulations to His Royal Majesty King Charles III.

Big deal. News over. Let's move on.
