Centuries of colonialism and its modern guise, imperialism, have created a continent without a robust social infrastructure and impoverished huge swathes of the population who labor to enrich their ruling elites with the sweat of their brow, thus providing a perfect "petri dish" for the virus to flourish and thrive and, incidentally, serve as a launch pad to spread the virus to other parts of the world. Extreme right-wing leaders like Brazil's Bolsonaro appear to be pursuing a path of "herd immunity" that could morph into a plague pattern akin to a genocidal policy targeting indigenous peoples, blacks and the poor.

The virus is spreading all over the world. This nothing to do with colonialism or oppression of blacks and indigenous peoples. Stop making me victim you Antifa nut job.

Agreed with darknuts here, this is not about colonialism, and at least when Europeans were there they were more organized.

This is a problem due to high corruption and lack of social welfare.

reamer said the problem of high corruption and lack of social welfare was created by past colonialism/imperialism...so you're saying the same thing basically.

Worldwide basic income only way out. Working for the 1% isn't safe

I'm living in Latin America currently. There are many many cases, however life goes on here as the people have bigger problems. Everyone is happy, all the businesses are open. There are precautions in place and that's it.

Latin America has the most corrupt governments in the world after Africa, Latin Americans live very unhealthy lives, most people being obese and ridden with chronic illnesses, plus the health system is a joke. Lived there for many years, not surprising really.

i think removing the 2 occurences of the word "Latin", your whole phrase still makes a lot of sense. haha.

The impoverished millions in Africa, Asia and the Americas living precarious lives undernourished and without access to proper health care are especially vulnerable to the virus and will probably supply the greatest number of victims before the pandemic has run its course in the next 1 to 2 years. And as long as these marginalized populations continue to host the virus, we denizens of the developed world will not be able to sleep the sleep of the righteous. We are all together riding in the same Spacecraft Earth, as signified by the Greek word "pandemic". We should all be afraid, very afraid, especially as we now understand how many of our government leaders have failed to flatten the curve through greed, ignorance, lack of nerve and sheer incompetence.

Centuries of colonialism and its modern guise, imperialism,

I might have escaped your attention that socialist paradises are not immune from this (or any other) virus either.

"Impoverished millions" like in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea? Really? Somehow I dont think they are worse off than the millions of morbidly obese Americans with their junkfood-caused diabetes. There are concepts like lifestyle and choice, you know.

"Impoverished millions" like in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea?

No, like in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Mongolia, China, Central Asia... Not to forget that the virus has not yet finished with Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong where their poorest can expect to take the brunt of the pandemic and in its wake the resulting economic downturn or collapse.
