Oust him, he is seriously an embarrassment to Australia. I thought he would be good, but have been badly mistaken. I mainly supported him because he was my local MP back in Sydney

"Abbott to survive vote of confidence" sounds appropriate headline.

'Suppository of knowledge' was a classic. My Aussie mate at work regrets that Abbott isn't facing a leader of the opposition with the sharpness of Hawke or Keating who would have taken this numbskull to the cleaners long ago.

Anyone with even a ounce of common sense could see this guy was a total disaster. It is amazing that these zeros are regularly elected, generally coming from the right wing side of the political spectrum. Bush for example or Reagan in the USA. And of course not Abe now in Japan. Is that the best the conservatives can offer?

This is classic Abbot from when Abe visited Australia not too long ago . .

During a parliamentary address, which was attended by Mr Abe, the prime minister went on to praise the bravery of a group of Japanese submariners who attacked Australia during a 1942 raid on Sydney harbour.

He said: “We admired the skill and the sense of honour that they brought to their task although we disagreed with what they did. Perhaps we grasped, even then, that with a change of heart the fiercest of opponents could be the best of friends.”

I just read that Abbot gave Obama a surfboard as a gift when Obama visited. What a comic this guy is.

A real dry spell in terms of political talent back in Australia. The last administration was like the Titanic heading for the ice-berg with two idiots fighting over the captain's chair. The current government is just as bad, if not worse. Moreover, the volume of rancor is unbelievable. Back in the day Australian politics was dominated by leaders who could debate without resorting to personal attacks on each other. People like Hawke and Keating could strike people dead with their tongue. These days it is just so much noise. Abbott deserves to go, but who will replace him? Both sides of the political fence seem to have a severe lack of talent.

One thing that's always annoyed ne with parliamentary democracy is the idea that party politics can disrupt the Executive. (Giving simple legislators the tools of Executive power is bad enough itself).

It's one thing to have a little fit about direction when the party is out of office or is forming a new government, but turning the cabinet's focus inwards instead of focusing on the country is irresponsible politically and not in the interest of the people they're governing.

The cabinet was chosen at the time of election victory. Save the bickering and wait for the next election.

What would you propose as an alternative?

Kevin Rudd has a mensa level IQ. Tony Abbot would have trouble spelling IQ. You can disagree with his leadership but Rudd is clearly smart. Rudd speaks Mandarin, Abbot barely can speak English. See below for an interview that Rudd does in fluent Mandarin.

At the G-20 Heads meeting in Brisbane, Abbott complained about a list of domestic policy problems, like people not wanting to pay an extra $7 for doctor visits, boasted about blocking boat people and increasing education costs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_epjAMuS8Wo. But he still claimed great government. Nothing much about the rest of the world, or even a welcome to 19 other bosses of their countries who did not know or care about the $7. His speech also showed almost zero acumen for talking to group of people culturally different to him.

A head-kicker par excellence, enough to draw a withering response from the last but one prime minister , highly divisive, riddled Abbott is also very vindictive. Woe betide his party if he gets dumped. Watch this space!

Like an immature teenage bully not quite the full quid and totally out of his depth. Best for him, his party and all Australians is his sudden ill-health, scandal or something to cause his resignation - anything to take him out of the game so adults can take over.

What would you propose as an alternative?

Ideally, an independent Executive; analogous to a semi-presidential system, where the Legislative appoints the Executive but are not a part of it.

Barring that, a legal ban on challenges to members of the Executive during their elected term. (I know the systems are different, but taking the US Speaker of the House position, you get one shot to elect your candidate every two years - no exceptions, no recalls. ((I despise recalls))).

'Why was Phil the Greek given a knighthood: services to xenophobia?'

The old goat has thrown insults at many people and countries around the world but I can't remember one directed at Australia ( given how many there are, I could be mistaken ). Perhaps Abbott felt honoured and flattered that his country hadn't been on the receiving end of one.

@zurcronium Irrelevant comparisons, Rudd was a complete and utter failure, only interested in his own celerity, too busy undermining and white anting and destabilising the party. He was suited to be a mid level bureaucrat at best, as a leader he was proven to be beyond useless.

Abbott is an equally limited talent, the most disliked opposition leader of all time actually, somehow became Prime Minister. He has since stumbled from really bad, to even worse, if that's even possible? These two are without a shadow of doubt the two worst Prime Ministers in Australian history. The sooner Abbot goes the better for Australia and the sooner we erase the embarrassment of the Rudd farce from our memories the better too. Compared in stark contrast to Keating, these two imbeciles are a very sad indictment to the quality, talent, vision and intellect of the current political pool.

Sadly Australian politic was manipulated and controlling by left wing media like ABC and Fairfax. These left wing Medias and Union always want Labor Government in Canberra. The problem with Labor is it doesn’t have right and talented peoples to govern Australia. They are talkers and over promised but under delivery also big spender. Tony Abbott does not have charming personality like Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard but he is 1000 time qualified for PM Job than those two labor jokers. Abbott Government has stopped the boats which costs over 11 billions dollars and still counting for Australia tax payers. Labor had never really save Australia from recession but Australian peoples were left with over $ 450 Billions debt. Abbott Government has trying to fix Labor debt but ABC doesn’t like it because ABC was one of victims of budget cut by Government. Also ABC thinks one day Coalition will sale off ABC or merger with SBS. So ABC is attacking Tony Abbot from day one he becoming PM. If we think the person who has charming personality, popular and sweet talk and then we should ask Hugh Jackman for PM of Australia. Tony Abbot given Knight of the Order of Australia to Prince Philip was not big deal because other Commonwealth nations have given various kinds of honor to Prince Philip. It doesn’t cost any cent for given Knight to Prince Philip. I do understand some peoples do not like Prince Philip and also they do not like Tony Abbott personality too. Unfortunately, the Prince Philip’s Knighthood becoming weapon for left wing medias to attack Tony Abbott. The important thing for PM of Australia is performance of his PM job. Tony Abbot is doing his job better than previous Labor Government in difficult circumstance. We have voted and choose Tony Abbot as Coalition leader in last election and we don’t want PM change in Canberra. ABC, Fairfax and left wing Medias should be stop breaking unity between Coalition Government and let Tony Abbott fair go. Any MPs who afraid of losing their seat and then they should quit politic because they are self serving politician and they are useless for Australian peoples and nation.

@Kobuta Chan

You raised a lot of points but failed to deal with the main point. Why do the majority of Australians think he is a tit?
