Lawsuits challenge new Arizona immigration law

Gotta love this. All the controversy and news is causing it to spread to other states. Oklahoma, Utah, Texas, California, Colorado, and quite a few more. All 50 states are dealing with problems caused by illegals. Its going to be hard to put this genie back in the bottle. With states finally stepping in and saying, since the federal government won't enforce its own law, we'll make it a state crime and enforce it ourselves.

The cop needs to be put on desk duty. He should know that you just can't stop and check on the status of any person unless there is probably cause for a crime (4th Amendment to the Constitution agains unlawful search and seizure). So for him to say there is no way to find out the immigration status from a lawful stop and questioning is laughable.

If the person is not brought in, they are given a summons to appear in court just like most misdomeanors, and if they can't prove legal US status, then they go to jail. So, if he can't do his part of the job, then I recommend he find another line of work.

in the 100-Mile 'Constitution-Free' border zone they already are detaining people for no reason. -So I don't see what the Federal Government is crying about. It always seems the Libs want it both ways.

Alphaape: The problem with that is, there are many instances of some that is in the United States illegally, being stopped, detained, given a summons to appear in front of an immigration judge to prove that they are here legally, then released, only to never appear/show up for their hearing. Why show up, when you know you're not in the U.S. legally, and deportation is the consequence? If they didn't play by the rules to come to the U.S. in the first place, why in anyone's right mind would they believe that they would play by the rules later in the game, after getting caught?

So, if one doesn't have the presence of mind to just follow orders, even in the face of a perceived violation of Constitutionally guaranteed rights, then he or she is consequently not good enough to wear a badge? He's a cop, not a Marine. Cops exist to uphold civil law, and there is no law greater in the United States than the Constitution. Your "Shut up and follow orders" refrain sounds surprisingly totalitarian, don't you think?

The centerpiece of anti-immigration thought, and conservative thought in general, always seem to revolve around the idea that if the rights of the few or even the many are trampled in order to preserve a steady cash flow for the privileged, then it’s a fair trade. Many would disagree. This Arizona law won’t see the light of 2011.

When Arizona actually passes a law that drips Nazism ("Show me your papers!") like this one, it's time for the Americans to slam on the brakes, which I look forward to being done soon.

I'm for this law,and I understand both arguments. IMO If people get stopped by the cops and they're legal to live there, what's the problem, just show the proper documentations. 70% of Arizona residents support the law, so let them deal with the consequences, good or bad. I'm tired of my taxes paying for someone who doesn't belong in my country. Who ends up paying their welfare, us. If immigrants want to come to the U.S., fine, but do it the legal way, like my relatives did.

Kinda hypocritical right? I mean you're one of those always preaching about how the government should have more control over our lives. And just cause they want to ask for papers, now its not ok? So its all right if they decide what doctors you can see, whether or not you're operation is covered, whether or not you can drive. Where you can live, where you can work, and a myriad of other things, but its not ok for them to ask to see proof that you actually have a right to be in the country. Ok, good to know.

Heh, don't I know it. I admit I have my own concerns about civil liberties and the government. Right now I'm in favor of it, but I don't have to like it.

Dems don't have a corner on the hypocrisy market. Conservatives are hypocrites on some issues as well. When it comes down to it, everyone is. Still, its always fun to point out the logical inconsistencies.

Wrong as usual! The 15 yr. old veteran said it it would impede an investigation not that there wasn't a way to do it. Apparently the Police Chief agrees. The Phoenix Police Chief Jack Harris, chief of Arizona's largest city said on Friday the state's controversial new crackdown on illegal immigrants would likely create more problems than it solved for local law enforcement. Harris said asking officers to determine immigration status during an investigation would interfere with their primary job.
