The French 2 stage Presidential electoral system certainly does not favor the extreme views of the Le Pen's of this world.

2nd stage tactical voting could well hobble Le Pen's campaign candidature for President, based on low personal popularity ratings currently around 25%. Le Pen's agenda is to force political opponents to commit to a referendum of France continued membership of the EU or failing that the Euro.

current pundits view is she can't make it thru 2nd round. given all that is going on in France and the world, not sure that is a certainty.

Does France have better pundits than in the US?

It might be better for France if she could win.

The 'true' precursors of what's currently happening around the world are imo not Trump or Brexit but guys like Abe and Turnbull (i.e the Japanese and Australian model) or Putin, Singapore etc. Strong anti-immigration policies, 'we decide who come to our country and how', priority to our people etc. They have been doing that for decades and it's been working 'ok' for their ppl (at least it's what a vast majority of locals wanted/want in terms of immigration).

Not sure it can work in countries like France or even the UK/US though.

France hosts the most international tourists of any country, probably on a ratio of 2:1 tourists to locals. Japan would have to increase their tourism 10x above current levels to match that ratio.

Seems ignorant or opportunistic to dismiss the global economy so glibly, Marine Le Pen Apple Pineapple Pen.

it’s possible for presidents like Donald Trump to not only be elected in the face of a system ranged against them, but also that they keep their promises.

Ha ha! If LePen has her own national police chief (e.g. Comey) and the leader of a devious, desperate nation (e.g. Putin) behind her, she might pull it off as well. As for keeping his promises - how's that wall going?

She's playing a dangerous game. After observing a very messy first 2 weeks of the Trump administration (if you can call it an administration), voters might be very wary about electing someone who's banging the same drum, lacking any real experience to run a country.

Nothing is impossible, never say never, a phase I believe from the Pckwick papers, still may not disguise Le Pen's need to secure country wide support to win the presidency.

All the same, these are strange times with the hapless duo Emmanuel Macron , and Francois Fillon, the very definition of incompetent political lightweights, made fools by the own inability to manage a credible campaign.
