Los Angeles hopes new mask mandate will reverse virus spike

Common sense says it won't, but politicians have zero common sense.

Keep hoping. The statement shows they have no real clue

LA County Health Department declares a mask mandate but the LA County Sheriff immediately says he will not enforce it. The most recent budget for LASD is an $86 million increase over the previous year that permits the department to hire more deputies, but the Sheriff claims the county cut his budget and therefore the department doesn't have the resources to enforce the mask mandate.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Desert Tortoise, the sheriff is also quoted as saying he won't enforce the mask mandate becuase it's not based on science.

Can you believe that? Craziness.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Masks are not necessary for vaccinated people. The CDC (the science) says so.

2 ( +10 / -8 )

“number of cases” don’t matter anymore as they now include vaccinated people who got corona anyway.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

The level of COVID-19 transmission we are currently experiencing is now leading to significant increases in serious illness

Once again, I can guarantee without a shadow of a doubt that the anti-vaxxers do not care.

Prove me wrong.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

The mask mandate in LA didn't stop it being a mess. Compare Florida to California on cases and deaths adjusted for population and gatorland seems to have done better even

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Because mask mandates have proven to work so well thus far, right? Just more optics from our inept leaders that claim to be "following the science".

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

“cases” are irrelevant.

Florida has a 7 day average of 33 daily deaths compared to 30 for California.

one place is open and free and thriving. California is going back to the failed masking mandate.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

nope. Florida has 59% vaccinated.

https://www.news4jax.com/news/local/2021/07/18/greater-jacksonville-driving-floridas-covid-19-surge/

Nassau County’s 50% and Duval County’s 49% vaccination rates are not far below the state’s average of 59%.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Masks are not necessary for vaccinated people. The CDC (the science) says so.

When absolutely everybody's vaccinated, yeah.

It’s a 30 second google search

*July Fourth concert may have spread COVID among vaccinated residents at John Knox Village*

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

Which will never be the case, ever. And the CDC didn’t say that.

When absolutely everybody's vaccinated, yeah.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Which will never be the case, ever.

So what's your point?

2 ( +4 / -2 )

obviously, that we cant wait until "everybody's vaccinated" to drop mask mandates.

CDC didnt say that, and thats not "the science". plus it will never, ever happen.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

obviously, that we cant wait until "everybody's vaccinated" to drop mask mandates.

So what's your point?

So, vaccinated people can still spread and catch Covid. To a far lesser extent than unvaccinated, true. Yet they ARE far safer, and far less likely to do so than unvaccinated.

Ditto masks, right? Masked unvaccinated people can still catch and spread Covid, albeit at a lower rate than unmasked.

So, the big question is, which group is more of a risk- vaccinated and unmasked, or unvaccinated and masked? If the former, then there is no need for any more mandates. Public health is less at risk compared to the days of masks and no vaccine. Which means continuing mask mandates are only public theatre and virtue signalling.

Also true that doing both provides even more protection, but there comes a time when paranoia begins to take over. There is always an element of risk in any human activity. We cant EVER be 100% safe, so we have to decide what our risk tolerance is for ourselves.

Science trumps common sense.

Science caused Fauci to tell everyone that people did not need to wear a mask when common sense said otherwise. Scientists are going around making recommendations and assertions based on incomplete data - then when they are proven to have made a mistake they expect people to never question their lack of common sense. I generally think it’s smart to listen to the advice of scientists in order to make informed decisions about my health. But let’s not pretend that they don’t make mistakes - because science doesn’t work like that.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

So, the big question is, which group is more of a risk- vaccinated and unmasked, or unvaccinated and masked?

Unvaccinated and masked.

That was easy.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

JSAPC so then there is really no reason to ask/force vaccinated people into masks, is there? By being vaccinated, they have already taken a step up in public health protection. I honestly do not understand the drive to do so. The added public health benefit is minimal compared to the social disruption.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Science caused Fauci to tell everyone that people did not need to wear a mask when common sense said otherwise.

You are mistaken, saying that you don't need to wear a mask because 1- there was no evidence yet it worked outside of hospitals or in asymptomatic people, 2- there were only a minimal amount of cases in the community 3- mask were much more necessary in hospitals, and there was serious scarcity of them.

Everything is based in incomplete data, you will never have all the data that is possible to get, but as long as is the best you can get then the recommendations are valid, because the option would be to give recommendations without any data, or even worse to recommend things even when the data contradicts those recommendations.

Everybody makes mistakes, but science is the best method found until now to prevent them.

Florida has a 7 day average of 33 daily deaths compared to 30 for California.

California has a population of almost 40 million. Florida has a population of about 22 million. Florida therefore has twice the rate of deaths per 100,000 residents than California has.

Some here, without naming names, are very selective in what they remember. Early in the pandemic PPE was very hard to come by. A friend with a shop selling vacuum cleaners and sewing machines was cleaned out of cloth HEPA vacuum bags by the local hospitals. Their staff was cutting the bags up to make face masks because they could not buy them there was such a shortage. Dr. Fauci early on was not alone in telling people not to use face masks as the priority was to get them to medical care providers who were themselves becoming infected and dying in large numbers. Tell the whole story and stop distorting the truth.

JSAPC so then there is really no reason to ask/force vaccinated people into masks, is there?

Yes there is. Unvaccinated and masked being riskier doesn't mean vaccinated is 100% safe.

The added public health benefit is minimal compared to the social disruption.

If having to wear a thin piece of cloth on your mouth causes "social disruption", then you are living in the absolute weakest and dumbest country ever created.

liberal spent one whole year arguing with me against per capita calculations.

But ok, sure.

Now do the total deaths?

California: 63, 395

Florida: 38,395

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

yet he lied and said we didnt need them.

this is his after the fact justification for his lies. that he lied to us so that more would be available for medical personnel.

Dr. Fauci early on was not alone in telling people not to use face masks as the priority was to get them to medical care providers

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

The problem is that the honor system hasn’t worked with the unvaccinated, and in most places it is illegal to ask for proof of vaccination.

liberal spent one whole year arguing with me against per capita calculations.

Nobody knows whaty you're talking about.

yet he lied and said we didnt need them.

Nope.

this is his after the fact justification for his lies.

Nope.

Anyway, what's your point?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

my point is that Fauci said he KNEW we needed masks but he admitted lying to us

Nah, he didn't, though.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

except he did-

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, explains why, at the outset of the pandemic, he advised against wearing face masks:

“Very early on in the pandemic, in the very early months, before we even had many cases, there was a shortage of PPE and masks for health care providers who needed them desperately since they were putting their lives and their safety on the line every day.

“So the feeling was that people who were wanting to have masks in the community, namely just people out in the street, might be hoarding masks and making the shortage of masks even greater. In that context, we said that we did not recommend masks.”

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

my point is that Fauci said he KNEW we needed masks but he admitted lying to us so that more masks would be available for medical personnel.

Of course you can provide a quote for that, it is very difficult to believe you since Fauci was only repeating what the scientific community knew at the moment.

We can see many right-wingers signalling their conservative virtue through expressions of anger about mask mandates. There truly is much virtue signalling going on by the right about these masks. We now know which posters are virtuous conservatives, due to their having virtue signalled this information to the rest of us.

We can see many right-wingers signalling their conservative virtue through expressions of anger about mask mandates.

For many yes, for others they could care less. Apparently, Texas Democrats don’t care either as they all were photographed on the bus without wearing them. Even they know it’s a farce.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

except he did-

Your quote completely disprove your conclusions, as expected.

This is a well now misrepresentation of the facts used to disguise false conclusions, it is not new and it has not become less mistaken in all the time it has been repeated.

This is doomed to fail. If there's anything Americans have shown over the past year, it's that they are not willing to self-sacrifice for the sake of their neighbors. They were they first country to drop covid protocol, and there is no way they'll tolerate a re-escalation of any protocols.
