States that spend money on education get a return on that investment with jobs and prosperity.
I am very proud of the Los Angeles teachers. They stood up not only for themselves, but for their students and for public education in general. And ultimately, for our democracy.

And the pension system remains severely underfunded. The day of reckoning just got moved up a couple of years.
If the amount spent on education were directly tied to achievement the Washington DC public schools would be the best in the nation - clearly they are not.

The performance of students at LA schools is pretty shocking. Only 32% of meet the basic math proficiency levels required by the state (Latinos 21%, African Americans 16%, Whites 49%, Asians 72%). Whether the teachers are to blame is a controversial question, but I don't think results like this will attract the best and brightest into the teaching profession. It seems like a downward spiral.

It’s not that simple as throwing money at the problem. If the parents and the child’s friends are not committed to learning, no amount of money will solve the problem. It’s why Asian kids do better than anyone other children. As a whole, there is a culture of learning that doesn’t exist except in any other group except for Jews.

What's up with the Asians beating the hell out of everyone else in math?
