that tells you one thing: non muslims are allowed to have sex in the car, period.

Man, Malaysia sucks. You can't even have sexes and drink beers.

"Islamic religious police"

I'll bet they're all men.

"Non-Muslims - Chinese, Indians..."

Yeah, the Chinese and the Indians are too smart to be Muslims.

The war on terror moves to Malaysia.........

Why not throw in a bit of S&M too. Some people pay a lot of money to be caned, i am not talking from experience. Even if they were married i suppose having sex in car is sort of illegal isn't it?

aaaaah... no alcohol,no sex what's next? no tv , no music like Taliban as well!? I read many cases in which maids from poorer countries of SEA were raped by their Muslims employers in Islamic countries , but the authorities often tend to turn blind eyes.

"Muslim population in India: 150 million ( world's 3rd largest Muslim population"

Should have clarified: Indians IN MALAYSIA too smart to be Muslims.

Ah Malaysia makes the news again for all the wrong reasons. This is why a complete seperation of church and state is needed whatever the religeon.

Islamic religious police caught Mohamad Shahrin Abdul Majid, 29, and Nadiah Najat Hussin, 24, with only their undergarments on in a car at an office parking lot in May.

Religious police?

they pleaded guilty to trying to have sex out of wedlock in their car

Guilty for trying.

they are appealing the caning as they plan to get married soon

Maybe the caning could be part of the wedding ceremony? This might help them to think twice, who knows?

I wonder what this is going to do to the business climate in Malaysia. I wouldn't want to be caught doing anything by the "religious police." Nobody expects the spanish inquesition! Guess tourism is going to dry up. I'd rather go to Singapore.

I felt like that the islamic Malaysians are living under the watching eyes of two types of police. whenever I read this kind of news I think myself that I am lucky one.

JT presents only five topics of international news a day. How many have been about islamic court rulings in Malaysia recently? Considering that there are many other important things to report from the world, aren't these Malaysian court rulings a bit overrepresented here?

This doesn't mean I wouldn't find these rulings problematic, but at least Malaysia is a democratic state and people could vote for parties which want to change the laws. It seems the majority doesn't want that change.

You could certainly find a lot of similar "backwards" rulings from a lot of courts in the world, whether from islamic or non-islamic countries. So why so much from Malaysia and no other news from Malaysia?

@ gonemad because they're being tried under religious law. Simple fact, if religion gets free reign over goverment law this is what happens and true justice will usually get overlooked for blind theocratic dictatorship by religious ideology.

I hope Malaysia's muslims will start to rebel against this kind of rule in their country. It's outright wrong to treat people like they are slaves. I couldn't imagine a Christian nut trying to punish me for my personal choices that aren't illegal for others.

@ HonestDictator: that was my first thought as well, but then we should get such news from all the many other countries as well, where religious law applies? Just think about Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran which quickly comes to mind as examples. Why suddenly so much about Malaysia?

“Why suddenly so much about Malaysia?”

Maybe"somebody" has investments in hotels there that they are worried about.

Malaysia " well and truly Asia" ??? Next time you see the television tourist publicity inviting the world to Malaysia remember if you or your wife have dark skin you will probably be asked for a passport before you are served beer in a bar. If a women dares to dress like a women she will be stared at or looked down on. Extreme muslim Malaysians are carrying out a witch hunt which if not controlled will kill tourism! Now whipping is the in word - "The world is watching you Malaysia" shame on you and these stupid judges. Before planning a holiday to this crazy place where people are whipped for silly small religious offences between them and their god please be aware " Malaysia is now "well and truly Saudi Arabia" and how many of us would choose to holiday there? !

this law does not apply to non muslim.. so no need to be fuss about it.. the religious police only care about the muslim.. every muslim knows that sex outside marriage is a sin.. i think all religion in the world is the same about this matter... if you want to have sex, get married then.. beside the canning in Islam is way different than the canning in civil law.. canning in Islam does not hurt the offender at all. the purpose of the canning is not to hurt the offender but to remind them about the sin and not to repeat it. The canning process in Islam, the offender have to wear thin but not transparent clothe (cannot nude). the canning man cannot raise his hand over his head/cannot open the armpit. he cannot cane at one place only. every struck has to be at other body part except face, head, chest and genital part. this is totally different from civil law where the canning man raise their hand as high as they can, the offender is nude, they cane at the same place over and over again. the cane itself nothing like the cane use in civil law. it just small moderate stick. even the end of the cloth can be use to 'cane' because after all its purpose not to harm/hurt the offender but just as a reminder to them.
