Children are children, Adults are adults. Being punished for making adult choices (with no harm to others) as an adult oversteps that persons right to make their own decisions as an adult hint hint.

Malaysia is Malaysia, but there never has been any need for a mommy daddy laws as this one is. But as long as you have good old fashioned Islamic law pre-determining your faith well before you're old enough to make that choice as an adult by yourself and irrefutably denying you any choices otherwise should you attempt to go against it... Well that speaks for itself.

Rape doesn't happen in these countries. =People that rape are choosing death (it's that simple). Men and women are both subject to this "cultural law" = that is why both were caned.

Asiamuslim, one thing you need to understand clearly from a religious perspective. God punishes people, it is not the peoples duty to punish people. It is the parents responsibility to discipline their child, not anyone else.

As a culture this punishment makes sense and the populace understands that. The proof is the after effect -apology and/or marriage. =Women and men take their sexual and (more important) family roles seriously.

The caning of men or women is insignificant and the law is insignificant. It is the actual practice of "family" within the culture that has meaning. Laws are for practice (role-modeling) not for punishment anyway.

When you go to these cultures with your inherent corrupt attitudes you can really make these people upset when you don't follow their laws. -The laws are there for a reason and it is better if you just accept that even if you don't understand.

sidjtd, this is about women being caned for having had sex. This is not about criminals or law-breakers in the sense of how developed nations define the latter two.

I personally don't understand why criminals deserve sympathy. I am not talking about this case specifically, but if someone clearly killed, and is especially not remorseful of it, is corporal punishment that does not leave marks or permanent damage essential if it would teach a lesson?

Remorse and regret is important, but so is fear of punishment or consequences if the potential criminals have 'no shame'. If you are not scared of being guilty you have nothing to fear.

I am not saying criminals or law-breakers should be mistreated in anyway shape or form, but they need to be accountable for their actions...

That's not the point. The point is it is deeply degrading, cruel and inhumane. It is beyond comprehension that a religion in the 21st century would condone this action. It is reminiscent of the wayward catholic church in the dark middle ages. A country with a regime that deals out justice measured with two different standards should be shunned.
