Is it legal to have employees working those kind of hours?

Farm workers are under different rules than factory workers due to the nature of the work. There is a 500 man-day limit per year for this sort of work. A single man-day is 8 hrs. Working 12 hrs, 7 days a week for 4 weeks is 42 man-days. Perfectly legal. Federal law mandates that on a per-hourly basis, the pay must be at least the federal minimum wage. States might have higher wage mandates.

I was a farm worker in my teens, in summer. Pay was 3-5x minimum wage, but only lasted 6 weeks so we wanted to work as many hours as possible. We all hustled so the foreman would pick us for any extra hours. It was hard, dirty, work, but a right of passage for lots of mid-western kids. Plus, at the time you could be 14 and do the job.

Whenever I hear that Americans won't do X work, I know that is a lie, provided the pay is more than minimum wage. Better pay usually gets more hustle, as with any position, computer programmer or farm hand or restaurant worker. Doesn't matter.

Ok, news today says the he was using stolen identity to work in the USA.

He was in the country illegally and shouldn't have been inside the USA at all.

This doesn't mean that all people illegally in the USA are killers. But it does mean that had the border actually prevented THIS illegal gaining entry to the USA, then this girl wouldn't be dead by his hand. Allegedly.

To a point, but also, the people are tired of the left lying and making excuses and trying to stop Trump from building this wall. What the left don’t understand is that the situation is only going to get worse and if the Dems don’t think smart on immigration, yes, they will actually have to come up with real policies, the people’s patience is running thin. The majority of Americans could care less about color. Mollie is no exception, however, that doesn’t dismiss what happened and the fact is that this guy was living in this country illegally is a clear and straight shot as to why we need to overhaul our immigration system. Build a wall, stop chain migration deport or incarcerate any illegal breaking the law and end the visa lottery program, that’s the only way we can get ahold of this madness. We want immigration, but it has to be fair and by the rule book.

I saw someone on Twitter who was a grieving member of the Tibbetts family mention that Mollie didn't like generalizing whole populations on the actions of a single individual, and asking that we not politicize the tragedy they are dealing with.

And did they or are you saying that he had every legal right to be in the States? Who is paying for this guys lawyer? I have a good guess.

This is only true if his being an illegal immigrant caused him to commit the crime. There is no evidence suggesting that to be the case an no real credible, logical reason to think it would be.

So we need to wait and see the results of the different investigations.

I agree. Unfortunately, that's not what POUTUS and the supporters of his regime are doing.

People in Iowa are pretty good about seeking the truth, not about railroading someone when there isn't substantial evidence.

I don't know any reason to think people from Iowa are more resistant to bigotry-based propaganda and fear-mongering than anywhere else in the world, but even supposing they were, it doesn't really matter because Trump was spouting his FUD about immigrants in West Virginia. A just trial for Rivera will be a very small victory if the propaganda being spewed about this story leads to some other immigrant who is innocent of wrong-doing being harmed.

a) that this was the person who killed her

b) that this person was in the country illegally

So we need to wait and see the results of the different investigations.

We do know that a 20 yrs old girl is dead and the suspect's vehicle was seen nearby. Motive, weapon, and physical evidence are needed to convict. I used to live in that part of the country (midwest) and have relatives who still live there. People in Iowa are pretty good about seeking the truth, not about railroading someone when there isn't substantial evidence.

This is really disturbing.

Rivera's immigration status doesn't seem to have any bearing on the crime he allegedly committed. I don't see any argument that his immigration status caused him to commit the crime or enabled him to commit the crime, so why are people fixated on it?

What we're seeing is the attitude set by the Trump regime trying to co-opt this tragedy to use to demonize other immigrants who haven't done any wrong. Tibbetts's family and loved ones deserve better than to be used as props for rabid, hateful fear-mongering. They deserve justice, which can only come from prudent, clear-headed people in the criminal-justice system. Injecting this political issue into the case interferes with that.
