Man dies in California after Taser arrest

A man in the northern California city of San Jose died after being jolted with a Taser, police said Thursday, apparently the sixth such death since the department began using the stun guns in 2004.

The man, who police said appeared to be in his 20s, got into a struggle with two officers when they tried to arrest him in the backyard of a home late Wednesday.

"The struggle was very, very violent to get him into custody," said police spokesman Mike Sullivan. "Some time during the struggle, the officers did deploy a Taser."

One officer was cut in the face during the scuffle and the other had a leg injury. Police said both were treated and released from a hospital.

Police watchdog groups said the death is the sixth in San Jose connected with use of a Taser, though police could immediately confirm that figure. The city has been sued in at least three of those cases.

I never understood the mentality of getting in fights with the Police. You are out-numbered and out-armed. -Who do you think will win that one?

Running maybe your best option. But California has those heat sensitive (IR) cameras in helicopters. -and do you really want to be on COPS! that bad?

Nothing new, too bad no one had a camera......California police departments have an outstanding reputation in the way they handle their prisoners.

Hmmm... might be time to think up another 'non-lethal' weapon to subdue criminals.

I have no sympathy for someone screwing up and getting their butt kicked, even if it turns out to be lethal. Don't screw up!

Now, these cops will eventually get fired and become a target for these watch dog groups and will probably have a hard time finding a job if they are lucky enough not to be put in jail.

Now, had this guy hurt/killed a person during a robbery, he probably gotten a few years in jail. these who killed my dad only got a few years and one got out on good behavior!?!

I would hate to be a cop. It seems almost everything works against you.

California police departments have an outstanding reputation in the way they handle their prisoners." Yes, and those prisoners got such a lovely rep as good citizens!

As a matter of fact, why don't we hear what the criminals in the US do here on JT instead of how they are being handled?

He was arrested in the backyard of "a home". Doesn't sound like it was his home. Would be interesting to know what they were arresting him for. Would also be interested to know if he was hopped up on drugs/alcohol.

Also, I've got a novel idea...DON'T RESIST ARREST!

When the cops tell me to put my hands behind my back, guess what? I'm putting my hands behind my back. Physically attacking a police officer (or two) has to be one of the dumbest things you could do.

This guy was an idiot.

I am not usually one to trust cops to readily I have seen too many cases of abuse of power. I remember walking home from high school and having a cop us the N-word and then tell me he could arrest me anytime and say I resisted arrest. I am sorry just cause someone has a badge doesn't make them a nice person. It was my freshman year and yes I walked well around the stupid area to get home put an extra 15minutes to do every morning and after school. So if you don't get why people my sometimes resist arrest the I suspect you have had a sheltered life.

a criminal died? good. Maybe they could avoid the tazar and use the pistol instead.

smithinjapan, But it is fun to see the suspect sprawl around like a new catched fish.

BushLover how do you know it was a criminal, could also just been a violent drunk

I remember walking home from high school and having a cop us the N-word" Ok, so a white cop did that. Would you have felt the same if that cop was someone like me or another black?

just cause someone has a badge doesn't make them a nice person" NO it doesn't but neither does it make them bad. We need to face it that the cops are just another product of society. Perhaps if people didn't screw up so much we wouldn't need the amount of cops that we have.

So if you don't get why people my sometimes resist arrest the I suspect you have had a sheltered life." I think everyone here recognizes that sometimes there is a need to resist, but if we accept that then we should accept vigilantism as well.

skip: "I have no sympathy for someone screwing up and getting their butt kicked, even if it turns out to be lethal. Don't screw up!"

Cut the drama, skip. This isn't about how 'bad ass' you were way back when, or how you 'bashed some skulls' (as you once proudly balked about when referring to a thread on skinheads), or how you and 'people of your kind' have been discriminated against. You come off sounding high-brow and just plain silly, and it undermines the more objective posts you make.

A guy died, skip, and there's nothing 'good' about it. THere's a reason tasers are employed as opposed to guns -- they are supposed to be a non-lethal means of taking someone down. Had he just been injured in the process I'd say it's just desserts for fighting with the police, but no way is his death 'deserved', my friend.

I don't think any officers should lose their jobs for this, and if they do, I think it's a shame (unless it's proven beyond a doubt it was unnecessary, but it doesn't sound like that's the case). Still, it's a perfect opportunity, after the SIXTH TIME!!! for them to go into some R&D for slightly less lethal weapons, like the vomit sticks in 'Minority Report' or something.

Again, no good comes of this.

I'm not sure but I think public intoxication is against the law in USA, so that would make him a criminal. I think resisting arrest is also against the law. And certainly physically attacking two police officers is against the law. Sounds like a criminal to me.

Per San Jose news--

A man in his 20s died Wednesday night after being shot with a Taser by a San Jose police officer who was attempting to take him into custody.

Here's another novel idea...DON'T TRY TO TAKE A POLICE OFFICER'S GUN.

This guy was an idiot.

1, I thought you would've applauded me 2 way back when...? Can you use that on me? I ain't that old yet to call things "way back when.. 3 R&D for slightly less lethal weapons, like the vomit sticks in 'Minority Report' or something."

Why not R&D go into making people good? Why any weapon at all? Anyway, I bet you a lot of cash if that went into effect, someone will still sue for a violation of civil rights. That's just how we are these days.

Again, for the millionth time, if people just don't screw up, they for the most part won't find themselves in bad situations and remember, that cops are usually out of the same place the perps are.

There's a lot missing to this story.

The dude was in someone's backyard. The cops responded to a call. When the cops confronted him he ran. They later located him and attempted to take him into custody. He resisted. He physically attacked two officers. He tried to take an officer's gun from the holster.

It's stupid to run from cops. It's even more stupid to physically attack cops. It's game over when you try to take away a police officer's gun.

This guy was an idiot.

No, they won't.

What a senseless waste of electricity.

You mean like the Happy Helmet Ren put on Stimpy that eventually made him go berserk (more than usual, anyway)? Anyway, dude, in an ideal world we wouldn't even need police, but unfortunately as we all know our world is far from ideal. That's not to suggest we need to stop looking into ways to ensure people are not killed in the process of arresting them (even when they put up a fight), wherever possible. It's pretty clear the tazer is not an effective way.

I agree that we are a pretty litigious world these days, and the US takes the lead and sadly sets the example in many cases, but you're going to get less grounds for law suits if there are less dead for minor infringements or petty crime (and no, fighting the police is NOT petty, I know, but if they could have used something more effective when the man was simply trying to run, perhaps even the SCUFFLE could have been avoided). The whole law-suit thing is a different issue I'd love to talk about another day.

As for the way back when comment, it's really just a figure of speech. I'm not necessarily suggesting you're some old dude who did these things in ancient times at all.
