ReasonandWisdomNippon - Inconvenient truth that many don't know.

...Britain by itself trying to keep Hong Kong which is right next to mainland China would never succeed. That's why they gave it back.

It's not an inconvenient truth that control of Hong Kong was a 99 year lease.

@Mark

I fully defend HK freedom and hate the PCC intervention but don't be fooled, HK is a properous city only for a happy few. This is one the most unequal society in the world.

The super wealthy HK people (12 families) have always been in bed with Beijing to secure their big share of the cake.

in many ways Japan Today is more neutral and objective than other western media outlets. after all this violent body-harming crime is reported here . When something is bad the standards for being bad should be applied universely.

I have relatives who have just returned to the U.K. after living in HK for more than twenty years. They got out before it got too bad, but many expats there are living in a bubble where they believe China won’t have any affect on their life and jobs.

LOCK M up.

Sad to see this once prosperous nation in turmoil , I pray that HK and China can reach a fair solution and keep HK as great as ever.

What's the logic of giving back Hong-Kong but not Gibraltar..........................

Seems the whole world except for you knows that Hong Kong was LEASED (look it up) from China and the lease expired in 1997.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

All that China needed to do was not interfere with Hong Kong politics and laws until 2047. They couldn't keep their hands off the "internal matter for Hong Kong." See - how that works?

None of this would have happened without them installing pro-CCP leaders and trying to change laws in HKG.

The protesters need to get the police on their side or the violence will continue and get worse. They are all from Hong Kong. Talk to the police over a beer. Talk about the future of Hong Kong together. Whatever you both want can be achieved with a little compromise. Forget the HK CCP-leaders. They need to go. If off-duty police AND protesters march together peacefully, that can be achieved.

What's the logic of giving back Hong-Kong but not Gibraltar and the Malvinas ?

One difference is that part of the Kong Kong territory was acquired by the UK in 1898 on a 99-year lease agreement. Of course, the residents of Hong Kong had no say on the original acquisition or any subsequent decisions.

Inconvenient truth that many don't know.

UK did not want to give back Hong Kong.

The reason they handed over HK back to China was because of military threat if they don't do so.

America and European powers tried during the Korean War to push back China and take over North Korea to reunifie the two Koreas. It failed.

Britain by itself trying to keep Hong Kong which is right next to mainland China would never succeed. That's why they gave it back.

Falkland Islanders and Gibraltarians have the right of abode in the UK, as well as their own autonomy. UK citizens have the right of abode in these territories too.

What's the logic of giving back Hong-Kong but not Gibraltar and the Malvinas ?

Gibraltar and the Falklands are inhabited by British people.

They certainly do not need any more knife-wielding people in the UK with knife crime already at a high. If that is the guy, he needs to do the time. Although I have sympathy with people protesting against China blatantly breaking an international promise, I have no sympathy for this guy.

The UK has done the right thing in giving residence rights to 3m HK citizens.

It's in 1842 that they should have done it, when they signed a treaty with China saying Hong Hong was British for... ever. That should have mean Hong-Konger = Brit. Why were these people held in a sub-status till last month ? What's the logic of giving back Hong-Kong but not Gibraltar and the Malvinas ?

Has anyone realized Hong Kong is part of China, the agreement made with the UK in the handover was one country two systems, at least until 2047 when the agreement comes to an end.

It's only 2020 now. The CCP could not wait until 2047 because the way things are going it would probably take a full scale PLA invasion to take over Hong Kong by then.

Glad they caught him, I don't see how any rational person could condone or overlook his violent attack of a police officer.

@ Old Man - When the Communists come for you and your freedom, no doubt you're going to kneel down and let them march on and destroy everything.

Some, like this freedom fighter, will fight for what he values.

Let the freedom fighters go! Down with Hong Kong Government!

Well done again China. Proving to the world that you’re neither humane, nor Intelligent.

The above actions of stabbing a police officer in such a brutal manner is totally unacceptable!  This man using a dagger assaulting a police officer willfully! Thanks to a relative of him tipped the police and identified he is trying to run away! Look, in Hong Kong many people disagree these violence actions in the name of freedom! Actually he has committed the law of "Hong Kong Security Act" of dangering the state's security!

So, let me get this straight. You can be arrested for simply waving a Taiwanese, Tibetan or Uyghur flag in HK now?

It depends entirely on your intention. If you are attempting to incite others to separate these territories from China, then you are now breaking the law in Hong Kong.

It's worth remembering that many European countries including Spain, Italy and Greece have also enshrined territorial integrity and the indivisibility of the state into their own laws. That's why the leaders of the Catalan independence referendum are now in prison. China rarely does anything unprecedented on the world stage. They are just good at selectively following in the west's footsteps when it's in their interests and weaponising our own hypocrisy against us.

We don't know the circumstances behind the stabbing, but all things being equal, would you condemn a dissident attacking a KGB agent, stormtrooper or Gestapo officer?

In almost every single case, the totalitarian regime is the aggressor and therefore in the wrong.

Has anyone realized Hong Kong is part of China, the agreement made with the UK in the handover was one country two systems, at least until 2047 when the agreement comes to an end. Since the handover a security law for Hong Kong was supposed to be enacted, bill 23, but was never passed , so since the handover Hong Kong has been running for 23 tears without a security law in place. Do any of the countries criticizing China , America , UK , the EU for example not have their own security laws. The videos coming out of the US at the moment show the hypocrisy and double standards that the American government has regarding security laws. The latest one I watched was police in full riot gear pepper spraying a group of protesters playing violins https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0ETxIdMNCc. So China enacting a security law for Hong Kong to protect it's citizens from those violent protests which caused so much damage and disrupted the life of the majority of the citizens of H K , is thought wrong by the west. People in glass house should not throw stones, I supposed there is a Confucius saying along the same lines.

it's hardly surprising that Beijing is cracking down

The crackdown is not as a result of attacks against police (which are wrong), but in its attempt to squash any attempt at keeping democracy and personal freedom alive.

This was always going to happen post-1997 - China was never going to leave it as independent long-term. It will kill the the golden goose with us tyranny.

The UK has done the right thing in giving residence rights to 3m HK citizens.

I don't expect him to see his family for quite some time if ever again.

If that is him in the picture attacking the police officer then he deserves a few years inside.

Given the protesters long history of attacking the police with knives, metal bars, petrol bombs and lasers, causing huge amounts of damage to the local infrastructure, it's hardly surprising that Beijing is cracking down. What else did they think might happen?

So, let me get this straight. You can be arrested for simply waving a Taiwanese, Tibetan or Uyghur flag in HK now? They've already started indoctrinating children in schools. I just wonder how long it will take before they start banning the use of Cantonese in schools.

Beijing hasn't wasted any time in enforcing their illegitimate, brutal authority.

I don't expect him to see his family for quite some time if ever again.
