I have deep respect for Nelson Mandela. He is a symbol of self sacrifice, of tireless compassion for others, of devotion to the cause of liberty and wisdom to manage a transition of state as peacefully as humanly possible when it could easily have been far more bloody and violent.

When I was a student I worked for Anti-Apartheid movements in the US. Working to divest schools, colleges and companies from connections to South Africa. I met people who had struggled in South Africa, I learned about Nelson Mandela, Biko and others. And to this day admire the courage of those who fought so hard and long for ethnic equality.

I am sorry to hear he is gravely ill. It may be time that the world lets go of this wonderful human being. And time that we accept that he is ready to rest. But I am deeply saddened that he is sick and I wish him a well deserved peace.

@tkoined2

You just said and summarized exactly what the man is and what he stood for his whole life, just amazing what he went through, he has been through and seen everything, from the harsh brutal racist system of Apartheid and brutal beatings and torture of the police, seeing many other brave figures of political peace and wanting to end the system of inequality and racism with the help of De Klerk (who grew up under Apartheid and defended it early in his life) to emerge from 27 years of prison to become the country's first Black President to live and tell and then to bring the country together White and Black is an astonishing achievement of ANY standard. My heart goes out to the entire family. I wish I could have met him.

Get well soon, Nelson. He's a fighter and as tough as they come - I reckon he'll come good.

bass this is probably one of the only times we have been on the same page. You gave me a warm smile today. Thanks for that. We share a hero in common. :)

The man and this topic holds deep meaning and significance for me too. While working for a Fortune 100 company, and discovering that, while it had announced it had divested from South Africa, it was still conducting business there through a subsidiary, I became active in organizing employees to sponsor a proposal that had to be presented and voted on at each annual stockholder's meeting. (A personal letter from Archbishop Desmond Tutu is one of my prized possessions.)

It was a beautiful day when Mandela was finally released from prison. I am hoping he will be with us for awhile longer.

If one man like Nelson Mandela can bring people of different political views together like Bassfunk and Tkoind2, just think that just maybe PEACE is possible in this crazy world!
