Do these vaccine mandates and other restrictions actually help?
Strangerland
Yes.
WeiWei
No, the vaccines do not help at all in stopping the pandemic. That is clear to everyone already. Meaningless to mandate them.
Sleepytanuki
Do you think the restrictions and mandates are too extreme?
Very curious.
Up vote for too extreme.
(The restrictions don't make sense to me)
Down vote for not too extreme.
(I'm okay with these new restrictions and mandates)
Strangerland
No.

When protection of the public is no longer considered the right thing to do then civilization as we knew it is done. Anarchy will follow with lawlessness the outcome. In the US with gun ownership there it could get ugly fast.

The new mandate takes effect days before de Blasio leaves office and Democrat Eric Adams is due to be sworn in.
So, this mandate might last 4 days or so.

It won't change anything now. The Anti-vaccination crowd are entrenched, even though they can't tell you a single scientifically truthful fact why they won't get vaccinated. They've screwed it up so there can never be herd immunity.
And now some Republican states are giving people unemployment benefits if they quit rather than be vaccinated. No state has ever given anyone unemployment if they quit.
2,034 people died in the US yesterday. Almost 15,000 people per WEEK are still dying. No one cares.
I'm in the corner that says let people not be vaccinated. You can read every day about hot shots who were famously anti-vaccination preachers, radio people, etc dying off one by one from Covid. It's like a TV comedy skit. Get them out of the gene pool.
Strangerland
Yup. America is broken.
Asiaman7
Japan doesn’t need mandates — because residents are mostly compliant. They get vaccinated (as requested), wear their masks (as requested), and shut their mouths on buses and trains (as requested).

Good! No vax no job and that's the way it should be everywhere!
Happy Day
Obesity is a much greater threat to public health in the U.S., yet there is no mandate against being fat.
Plan for dealing with COVID should be simple: encourage vaccinations for the vulnerable and, if needed, use one of many highly-effective treatments. This has worked in some countries and U.S. States.
At this point, COVID is a public health problem only if politicians/bureaucrats want it to be.
plasticmonkey
Because obesity is not contagious. Your being overweight does not put others in danger of becoming overweight.
Peter Neil
Those with a rare breakthroughs even though vaccinated are almost always non-symptomatic and don't require hospitalization.
And no, not catching it like "everyone else." That's dishonest. Vaccinated people rarely catch it, and the unvaccinated are the one's hospitalized (over 99%) and the one's putting healthcare workers at risk and costing taxpayers dearly for their anti-social lunacy.

There used to be a large box with this information on every tv news program and on every news site. Those mysteriously disappeared late January this year.,

An increasing number of bars and restaurants are requiring proof of vaccination to enter here in Tokyo. Good. I don’t want selfish conspiracy theorists spreading the virus around me because they are too selfish or cognitively challenged to take a proven safe and effective vaccine.
Welcome to the future, guys.

Same with me. What to me is making things worse is calling health restrictions fascist, but then many of those doing that have little sense of what fascism actually was and is, beyond it being a bad thing and a word they use to call those they disagree with. While many of those saying health restrictions are fascist are at the same time supporting regimes like Russia's which is as close to fascism as any current one could be.
GdTokyo
This is not true. Daily updates are available on both The NY Times and the Washington Post. Updates are available by global, country, state and county level for infections deaths and vaccinations.
Sheikh Yerboaby
Vaccines undoubtedly help.
Masks and other garbage....not so much.
Hiro
Do not forget vaccines were never about stopping infection completely, but about making sever cases turn into mild cases. It strengthen the immune system. Which in turn prevent you from dying and overrun the health care system with critical cases. It's a way to prevent of burning out the nurses and doctors. Do you really want to risk the children, old people and pregnant women getting sick? So vaccine does help. Especially here in Japan where we have the world oldest population.
takeda.shingen.1991@gmail.com
Not true. No one is hiding Covid statistics, they've already been posted here.
What is missing, though, is any analysis or interpretation of the data.
bo
New York leads the world and about time, too. The anti vax brigade will of course try to evade it all, but just well done New York
Peter14
You dont seem to understand that being vaccinated protects against severe illness, death and long covid. Oh he/she was vaccinated and still got covid. Yes but they didnt get very sick because they were vaccinated.
GdTokyo
Yeah, because it’s not true. Deaths are averaging around 1,200 per day which is way too high but nowhere near the 3,000 per day peak of the Trump debacle.
Again, these are easily knowable objective facts.
Deaths and infections are up because a portion of the population has decided that facts, science and public health don’t matter. That’s not Biden’s fault. That’s on the GQP.

lets talk some facts, not some fake news.
-virus can be transmissed by both vaccinated and nonvaccinated people
-what you call a vaccine is just experimental product, not properly tested one.no one maker takes any responsibility for any side effects caused by using of it,even in case if this resulting in death
-no one country in world with high so called "high vaccinated population"/say Gibraltar,Denmark,Israel etc/actually won over virus and in every of these countries high part of hospitalized people are ones who were vaccinated already
-narrative that vaccine brings you freedom for travel, freedom for life etc is false one as even vaccinated people may get infected and since their immunity have been changed by vaccination with experimental product-they may have high risk of side effects and hospitalization
all in all-keep check details from many sources and dont rely just on some mainstrem media news where no discussion exists...and yes its kind of one sided story or propaganda.
so back to article-all of these measures like mandated vaccination for all is purely insane and groundless.
Attilathehungry
It is strange- I don't remember other vaccines as being touted this way. "You might get sick but it won't be so serious". Other vaccines, if memory serves, offer immunity from the target disease. This one not so much.
As for the whole quest to label skeptical people"anti-vaxx", that is just propaganda. There are many who are pro vaccine but anti mandate. Perhaps that level of nuance escapes the hysterical and authoritarian in our society? Plus, if you look at how other vaccines were accepted, the process is the same. Many were sceptical of MMR vaccines, polio vaccines, etc, yet in the course of time they changed their minds. The same logic can be applied to the Covid shot as well.
The more you try to force the vaccine on the unconvinced, the more pushback will be generated. Patience and a gentle word would work much better. Let the facts speak for themselves. There is no way to eliminate this virus, or to guarantee that nobody will catch it or die from it. It is just another, relatively small, risk factor in life. We all may as well get used to it and get on with our lives.
Strangerland
Yes, but unvaccinated people spread it by a factor of 3 or more over vaccinated people.
Fake news.
Um, Japan.
Vaccine passports.
Darn, you were wrong on all those points. Ouch.
Strangerland
Really? They didn't do that during the last world-wide pandemic with a high portion of anti-vaxxers?
When exactly was that?

@Asiaman7. “Japan doesn’t need mandates — because residents are mostly compliant. They get vaccinated (as requested), wear their masks (as requested), and shut their mouths on buses and trains (as requested).”
We do all those as recommended, not requested. We don’t get fined for not doing those things. We don’t get discriminated if we don’t get or haven’t got any jabs. mask has been with us long before COVID and we don’t need to be asked to do so. And mask doesn’t really threaten our life… some current vaccines might. We don’t shut our mouths in public transportation. We have our own etiquette to not disturb others.

Thank the Lord I don’t live in US.

Japan also doesn't need mandates because the public is not obese, ridden with diabetes, or drug addled as in many western countries. The demographics don't lie. Older, fatter, sicker people die of Covid in far greater numbers than other groups. This is also why half of Africa and half of India are not dead, in spite of low vaccination and new variants. They aren't old, fat, or sick either.

There’s not much more fun than triggering the Reddit kids with facts about vaccines and Covid.
Attilathehungry
Stranger, I noticed you didn't mention obesity or drug addiction in your answer. Diabetes is one ailment, but there are many others I could have mentioned that are more prevalent in the West- heart disease, high blood pressure, etc. that contribute to the lethality of Covid, and are less prevalent in Japan.
Japan started vaccinating later, and slower, than many other countries, yet the per capita fatality rate is much lower than most other major nations. It's a crowded place, no strict lockdowns or mandates, so I can only conclude that other factors matter much more than government edicts in Japan's relative success in curbing the virus.
Strangerland
Yeah, Japan doesn't have a lot of obesity or drug problems. I was pointing out the points you made where you were wrong.
Strangerland
And look how fast the vaccines worked once they got rolling!
Blacklabel
because it doesnt stop transmission of the virus as was originally promised. Nor does it prevent me from getting COVID, as was also promised.
Blacklabel
yet there were no unvaccinated people on that cruise ship that had the COVID outbreak.
Nor did any unvaccinated person spread omicron and introduce it into 30+ countries.
