mccain's speech barely mention his opponents at all. But I'm more worried about this nutjob running mate. she's apparently one of the end-timers, who believe that we're in the biblical end of the world cycle. great. that's someone who ought to be a heartbeat away from the presidency and the nuclear codes. dangerously insane.

GOP: The Party That Wrecked America

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If you talk so much about change, then its time to gather courage and admit that the last 8 years has been a curse. Thanks you Gustav, Bush dodged the time he was supposed to come and apologize for the 8 years he destroyed America.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

“USA, USA, USA,” chanted the crowd in the hall.

Says it all.

The Democrat Party convention ended with chants of "Obama!Obama!Obama!"

0 ( +0 / -0 )

“And let me offer an advance warning to the old, big-spending, do-nothing, me-first, country-second Washington crowd: Change is coming,” McCain declared.

Ha ha!! He's just admitted to the nation that Washington has been "old, big-spending, do-nothing, me-first, country-second" while he has been part of it for the past 26 years.

Why didn't he do anything about it then, and why should people think he is going to do anything about it now???

Who advises this guy???

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"Obama spokesman Bill Burton said, “He admonished the old, do-nothing crowd in Washington but ignored the fact that he’s been part of that crowd for 26 years, opposing solutions on health care, energy, and education.”

Exactly, exactly....

But the "America Last" Republican crowd are just too cowardly to admit it. :-)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Heh, McCain is going to change Washington in the same way that time changes cheese, ha ha.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sushi: Why didn't he do anything about it then

McCain is pretty famous for doing a lot of the things he mentioned in his speech such as working with Democrats and eliminating pork spending. You really can't ignore that just because you personally hate the man.

As for Obama, he said, “I will keep taxes low and cut them where I can. My opponent will raise them. I will cut government spending. He will increase it.”

The Republicans have really misrepresented a lot of things during the convention. McCain's plan will actually increase taxes on a greater number of Americans overall.

And his platform will increase the government deficit overall. That's true for both Obama and McCain.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Scattered protesters inside interrupted his speech briefly near the start. He dismissed them, telling the crowd not to be diverted by “ground noise and static.”

The Marxist retreads from Code Pink.

Can any American here imagine Truman, JFK or even Walter Mondale having anything to do with the kind of fruitcakes that now populate the Democrat Party?

Jodie Evans is one of Barack Obama's top bundlers. This woman is so unhinged she had to be forcibly removed the other day when she tried to interrupt Gov. Sarah Palin's speech by storming the stage in a hand-painted dress which declared ''Palin Not a Woman's Choice.''

sushisake,

nice post. mccain reminds me an overripe camembert.

But he did go after his own party, what a joke. He is right in that those old shinebox repubs in the half filled arena were being hit upside their heads for supporting bush for the last eight years and his trainwreck administration. Now you know why bush gave a five minute address on TV and Cheney is MIA. What a joke!! mccain calls his part a failure at their convention. Incredible.

you guys are idiots who voted for bush, who I hate, for two terms and now I have to clean up the mess . . .

I think Anderson Cooper said it best when he said, "The Democrats just don't know how to do negative campaigning." The fact is that the Republican machine are masters at it, and they're playing it out right now. I predicted this race would be close and it looks like I'm going to be right.

I think Obama is up to the challenge and I respect and support him, but I think those who lead the Democratic Party overall are mostly complete idiots who couldn't win an election if their Moms were the only people voting.

One of my favorite parts that all the media talking heads seemed to have missed but will hit a home run with the independents is Mr. McCain wants to do away with foreign aid, and it is about time.

American voters now see that John McCain is real and true to himself, whereas barack obama is a liberal puppet.

The choice is clear: false media-created icon vs. true maverick patriot.

heh....pretty funny. But I'm still voting for Obama. I just donated $50 to him through his website and I sent my voter registration information out yesterday. I still think he can win. And I think he can win despite the Democratic leadership doing everything they can to pull him down.

Historically it is their turn. Wouldn't be surprised if Joe Biden suddenly develops health concerns necessitating his replacement...

Eh, whatever. I'm tired of stumping for (against?) people who insist on shooting themselves in the foot with the guns they love so dearly.

The sad truth is that the "liberal elites" "Hollywood pinkos" and "left-wing media" that supposedly all of the red-blooded "real" Americans are sticking it to by continually voting for people like Bush and McCain are among the Americans least affected by partisan policy decisions because they are relatively well situated economically, and have education and skills that make them competitive in a global market.

So let the "real Americans" who always "put America first" (an act apparently defined as "acting out of self-interest like everyone else, but being Republican") vote for whomever they want, but it is laughable such people think they are sticking it to Obama, Ellen DeGeneres, Keith Olbermann, etc. worse than they are sticking it to themselves. At the end of the day, liberal elites have houses and money. Their kids aren't going to Iraq. They don't have to worry about unplanned pregnancies or kids learning medieval science. Not surprisingly, liberal elites benefit from pro-rich, pro-corporate policies just the same as conservative elites. They just don't feel quite so good about it.

Like your Bible says, "as you sow, so shall you reap." Real Americans, you want it, you got it. Just don't kid yourself about who is really getting it and where.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

With McCain/Palin , America will find its way back to GREATNESS. Obama speech brought "wow" and suspicions from me but McCain speech actually brought down my tears, especially those last words. And I am not American.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Nice seeing people sticking up for the parties.. right and left alike.. its just great, but I foresee something terrible coming on. I firmly believe there is going to be hell in the streets of America once the election is over. I don't think the right is going to sit back and accept defeat and I don't think the left is going to either. We are now a much more upfront and hostile people than we were just a few years ago.

Yeah, McCain says he is going to shake up Washington. Clinton said that and I think, although I was too young to remember, Regan was one of the first to point out that it is the US government that is the problem, not the people. The only shaking from McCain is going to be from that fat hanging off his body and Palin's upper body parts! Obama ain't gonna do a damn thing either, in fact I foresee a larger, much larger government than we have had. Only change we'll see is that on mount Rushmore.

So let the "real Americans" who always "put America first" " Please show me where these ET's are because I haven't met any.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

At the end of the day, liberal elites have houses and money. Their kids aren't going to Iraq. They don't have to worry about unplanned pregnancies or kids learning medieval science.

And like you what they have in greatest supply are simplistic caricatures of the real America, because most of them also despise it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I liked what McCain had to say. He spoke from the heart without any cynicism and you cannot challenge the bit about outgrowing his initial arrogance to serve a greater cause than yourself. Obama's speech was great, too. Neither candidate can afford to give a bad speech at this point. And neither has. It has all been calculated for effect. It's going to be neck and neck right down to the finish line, as it was when the George Bush barely passed by Al Gore so many years ago...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The point is, any president has to get his policies through congress to get them enacted. For McCain that probably means a hostile, Democrat controlled congress. For Obama, he will probably have things his way for the first two years but in 2010 we elect all new congressmen and one third of the Senate and, like Clinton, there is a change that he will face a hostile congress after that as the party in the White House usually loses congressional seats in off year elections.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

why didn't anybody tell those protesters that St. Paul bridges are unsafe? 200 Demo-Crats, illegals and AP reporters could have died.

And is having a 72 year old President really that safe?

If McCain loses a wheel we may have TR's Bull-Moose party.-we are talking Big changes that would even make T.R. Proud.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

And like you what they have in greatest supply are simplistic caricatures of the real America, because most of them also despise it.

And there you are, just like clockwork. Sometimes a caricature is simple because the subject is not complex.

Chants of "USA! USA!" do not demonstrate that Republicans put their country first. If these chants demonstrate anything they demonstrate that the flag sells--which probably accounts for the fact that the guy down at the American Muffler shop has a red, white and blue design on his stationery with a nice emblem of the old stars and stripes seeming to flap in an unfelt breeze.

But if y'all want to make this a case of Obama vs. The United States of America, don't let me stop the inanity. What is truly inane is McCain running the campaign that he has to date and then claiming that he is going to change the culture of Washington.

He'd better try something a little smaller first. Like trying to change the culture of the military. If that is smaller.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

“constant partisan rancor”

Yes he and Palin will fight the Rancor and defeat it like Luke did! Trust good old McC.....Btw he said yesterday that he saw the new movie called Return of the Jedi and there was a Rancor there also!

So all you good Republicans dont forget if you dont vote for good old McC then make sure to see that new Movie, Return of the Jedi! It is in the movie theaters right now!

What accounts for the flag pin Barack Obama now prominently displays on his shiny suit lapels?

I still haven't got answers to my earlier questions: What kind of change is John talking of? Where was he when all these issues that has brought the need for change was happening? Sarge:

Prepare to be bitterly disappointed.

Indeed. I wouldn't want to be Obama if he gets elected. There's no way any mortal man can live up to the hype his followers have slathered on him. If he does gets elected, those same followers will spend the next four years making excuses.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I'll admit this speech was a slight increase in tactical speaking than the last few, and had quite a bit more oomph to it. Still, while McCain spoke more eloquently and has probably won over a few more people, he still never even hinted at HOW he's going to perform all the miracles he claims he will. What's more, he says, "I don't work for a party, I work for YOU!", but calls other 'yous' in the crowd "nothing but ground noise and static"; in other words, he works for you, only so long as you support him and buy into his rhetoric.

If and when elected, McCain and Palin would IMMEDIATELY alienate more than half of their electorate with no qualms whatsoever. They have no grasp on economics, and evidently a very faulty one on religion. What's more, he would make even more enemies world-wide than Bush did, and thus more 'terrorists', and less peace in general.

All that aside, this is fun to watch.

McCain gets some points for his work today, I'll give him that, but he's still not the right choice. Now, if he had made his speech today with a better VP pick, he would be even farther; as it is now again Palin is going to come back and bite him in the a$$.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

There's no way any mortal man can live up to the hype his followers have slathered on him.

It's more like the lies that have been told about him and then the truths. From one extreme to the other.

We'll just have to wait and see.

But no matter what george bush will be out of office in 136 days. < :-)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

McCain is the man to finaly settle some of the party fighting and gridlock in government. He has a history of bi-partisan legislation and is well known to be anything but the darling of the Republican base. Let's hope people are starting to wake up to Obama's empty rhetoric. McCain is an American hero and honorable man, too bad he didn't win 8 years ago, we could have missed the Bush fiasco.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I notice the Republican hacks here at JT don't have much to say about McCain's speech.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The Republican convention was, unlike the Democrat's, was not a convention and not an acceptance speech that strikes fear in the hearts of Democrats anywhere.

'Cause In the real world, outside the convention hall, the jeering and cheerleading Republicans can't win by themselves.

"Cause America is sick of their crap.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

DanManjt, I thought McCain's speech was quite good he came off as genuine and sincere. It may not strike fear into the hearts of Democrats but Obama's typically well delivered speech didn't strike fear into the heart of Republican's either. For the record I'm an independent and have voted as follows: Clinton, Clinton, Bush, Kerry and will be voting for McCain. Personally if Hillary had gotten the nod it moght be more of a contest but with Obama not even close. Obama is a young senator who rocketed from obscurity to the national stage. He makes a great speech but he doesn't have the experience under his belt to make me even consider him. Beyond that the promises he makes and his speeches full of glittering generalities do nothing to inspire me. Lastly the fact that he is a product of the Chicago machine where dead people still vote should at least give people some pause to wonder exactly who pulls his strings.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I as a former Vietnam vet. As a former active duty Marine. As an American. I have the utmost respect for John McCain and the service he has given this country.

I just don't like his politics.

I heard about half of the Republican Convention about how John McCain's military service and his capture/torture should make him qualified to make him president.

There are a lot of vets who would be qualified to be president based on those qualifications. There is so much more.

I salute John McCain, but I won't vote for him. < :-)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I actually liked the speech about being a POW and his thoughts and actions throughout that horrible 5 year ordeal. When he says he loves America and will fight for America, I believe him. It is very genuine. Especially when he coulds have been released from Hanoi within 2 years had he given US information. He can't even raise his arms above his shoulders because of the injuries of torture. Someone that feels that way about being an American and will endure such horrors for their country; you better believe I will vote for him.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why does a politician need to strike fear in his opponents? Sounds to me like you are too much focused onto the macho/my d@*k is bigger than your mentality.

Time to see past the party-lines/propaganda if you want to elect a true leader. Cut out all the hog-wash.

I was involved in a merger a few guys displayed their "employee of the months" etc awards from last company. They were told to take them down, because past achievements/etc mean nothing only what they can do now for the company. Same should count for politics, who cares if X smokes Y or had a good time with Z.

What can the guys deliver NOW and in the future should matter not because he belongs to party X or Y. A good leader will go beyond the party-lines and shine as a true leader not as a stooge/doll of party X or Y

And a true patriot, IMHO, holds no party affiliation but will vote for the best candidate.

Just my view.

I didn't say anything other than the obvious:

McCain's speech was nothing special. Not great, not bad.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why is McCain wasting America's time hyping up his "experience" gained in a jungle war 4 decades ago where he spent most of it rotting in a prison camp for 4 and a half years after he crashed (yet again - the 6th time?) after bombing innocent civilians?

Probably Bush took a leaf ourt of McCain's book and followed suit bombing innocent civilians in Iraq.

Heh, rah rah "patriotism" to Republicans is like mud to a pig : -)

When it's there, wallow in it!

"John McCain, a POW turned political rebel" <-- got to love that from the first line of this article.

Considering McCain has clone-voted with Bush for 90% of the bills that have gone through Congress in the last 8 years, that must make Bush a "political rebel," too.

The Republican Failure Machine just gets funnier!! LOL!!! :-)

I hated that cheesy grin he seemed to want to call a smile.

McCain's NVC captors, ardent little Commies that they were, smashed his teeth in.

The various tortures he endured those five years also left him unable to salute the flag of the country that he, his father, his grandfather and his great-grandfather served.

Gonna go after him for that?

Why is McCain wasting America's time hyping up his "experience" gained in a jungle war 4 decades ago where he spent most of it rotting in a prison camp for 4 and a half years after he crashed (yet again - the 6th time?) after bombing innocent civilians?

I see you've combined some of your favorite McCain phrases into one mega phrase. It looks like you dropped the 2-6 reference on the planes and went straight for 6 even. The bombing innocent civilians appears to be another new addition.

Bravo.

Superlib, thanks for donating money to the Obama campaign.

Appreciated.

"The various tortures he endured those five years also left him unable to salute the flag of the country that he, his father, his grandfather and his great-grandfather served.

Gonna go after him for that?"

I don't get this "argument".

How many other war veterans from anywhere suffered similar treatment? Should all these people be eligible to become president too?

Heh, McCain is simply too old and a republican at a very bad time to be one.

No amount of amphetamines and sleepless nights in mom's basement is going to change this.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Madverts posts: Gonna go after him for that?"

I don't get this "argument".

Maybe you'd "get" his argument if you didn't leave off an important piece of context: McCain's "grin" that another poster was ridiculing.

I didn't take his argument to be anything more than the context in which he placed it.

As for "eligibility" to be President of the U.S. I am eligible based on the U.S. Constitution. Perhaps you mean something other than "eligible" in your post?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Interesting to see that most that the people who actually fought in wars (not just adaydream) support Obama, while the Armchair Generals who haven't been anywhere near a battle front support the "patriot" (ha ha!) McCain.

And I find it interesting to see that you are able to extrapolate so much information from a few poster's on an obscure forum.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sarge,

Eisenhower warned against the military-industrial complex and nobody really listened. As a result we have a country that idolizes the military so much that we spend more on "defense" than--by some measures--the rest of the world combined. And then we obsess about 20% budget increases by China to ask for more.

I have been safe and free to criticize the military. But it does not follow that the military has been doing a good job of securing that freedom. I could hire a private security firm to cordon off my house and whistle to keep the elephants away and, if I wanted to do so, I could use the absence of elephants to give out bonuses to the security team.

Why would the military culture need to be reformed? Well, in addition to its cupidity there's Tailhook, for example. There is the continuing problem of rape. There is the problem of Christian zealotry at the Air Force Academy. And I don't think these are all. So don't try to suggest that every thing is all hunky-dory.

But the point is this. Washington is the biggest bureaucracy going and it has gotten even bigger under Bush. It would have been good of McCain to begin his changes when the bureaucracy was expanding but he did not. McCain has not shown that he can change any culture, let alone Washington's. Perhaps he should start smaller.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

mar4eo,

What accounts for Obama's flag lapel pin? I would say idiocy. We cannot distinguish patriots by whether they sport a flag or chant "USA! USA!" But that does not mean that we will stop requiring people to genuflect at the altar of our prejudices.

"Tonight, in this hall, we resolve to be, not the party of repose, but the party of reform."

0 ( +0 / -0 )

We cannot distinguish patriots by whether they sport a flag or chant "USA! USA!"

Actually, those fools are not patriots. They are nationalists.

Had they been born in France or China or Japan, they'd be the same.

They are American's purely by accident of birth. Which has nothing to do with loving this country for what truly makes her great.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Nessie: "Q. What's the difference between a pit bull with an ethics problem who spends public money lke a drunken sailor and Sarah Palin?"

A. Sarah Palin is a fantastic woman with impeccable morals and has a record of standing up against special interests and entrenched bureaucracies, fighting corruption and stopping government from wasting taxpayers' money.

Any other smart-aleck questions?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

DanManjt: "those fools are not patriots. They are nationalists."

But the fools who chant "Obama, Obama!" are patriots, right?

"They are American's purely by accident of birth."

I would change that to

"They are Americans purely by fortune of birth."

Sheesh

Things just got shakened up even more. McCain now has a Cressbeckler problem. This guy is going to siphon off some crucial votes from a block he thought he had already sewed up.

This could actually lose it for him as the election is going to be close and he needs every vote just like Obama he can get.

Dang....Wish this guy wouldn't run as an independent, though I like his plan as to how he would deal with China.

Sarge,

We've had enough of trying slam potential candidates so called lack of experience from both camps. I think you really look at Cressbeckler's positions instead.

His health care plan is awesome. A flask of whiskey and needle and thread for all. Cheap, affordable and most importantly allows each person to make their own health care decisions as to how they would treat themselves.

He's making me think over who I might vote for after all this year.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sarah Palin is a fantastic woman with impeccable morals and has a record of standing up against special interests and entrenched bureaucracies, fighting corruption and stopping government from wasting taxpayers' money

Here's a quick one: Did she increase her town's budget, or decrease it? And did she leave it in the red or in the black?

I respect small-government conservatives. They understand the principles of conservatism. I don't always agree with them, but often I do, and even when I don't, I respect their ideological consistency. I have many friends who are small-government conservatives.

In contrast, I have nothing but contempt from conversatives who talk about small goverment until they get into power, and then spend like mad. Honestly, do you really think Palin's experience shows that she is a small-government conservative who understands fiscal probity?

I don't really hold her pork against her, because not getting pork is like declaring unlateral disarmament. Pork-barrel-free government works only if everyone else does it, too. But pretending to be against a pork-barrel project after supporting it? Dishonest, full stop.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

DanManjt,

Right you are. That kind of "patriotism" reminds me more of Bill the Butcher and the Natives of Five Points.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

That kind of "patriotism" reminds me more of Bill the Butcher and the Natives of Five Points.

LOL. More caricatures.

Got any real life examples? You come here with prisms like blockbuster movies or hilarious anachronisms like the old neighborhood "muffler shop" . Makes me think you have never lived in the US, or only did so for a brief spell.

sdmsec,

"Maybe you'd "get" his argument if you didn't leave off an important piece of context: McCain's "grin" that another poster was ridiculing."

Nah, I'm not getting into that bit of shameful childish shreiking like a certain poster seems to revel in.

My point is that just because McCain were unfortunate enough to be a POW and mis-treated, I don't see what extra summat that can add to one's resumé for the top job. On the contrary, I would expect all kinds of inherent phsycological problems having suffered at that extent...

That was the refernce to "eligible" in my post.

Nessie,

Here's a quick one: Did she increase her town's budget, or decrease it? And did she leave it in the red or in the black?

But pretending to be against a pork-barrel project after supporting it? Dishonest, full stop.

Your not going to find a more balanced or fairer assessment on this then this link.

The answer to your questions is pretty much yes and no. Things are always a little more complicated then they are originally are potrayed once again.

I hope you find the link and the information on the site useful, I sure did.

mar4e0,

Whatever I come here with, you come here with less. The point is this: Chanting "USA! USA!" is not a sign of patriotism. DanManjt correctly calls it nationalism and probably, in the case of today's Republican party, jingoism--if that isn't too much of an anachronism for you.

OK, it's been going on 20 years since I actually lived in the US, but I spend time there every year and I haven't noticed any fall-off in businessmen using the flag to promote their businesses. They don't want there to be any mistake. They're Americans, yes. More accurately, they are people who are that they are Americans and appealing to others who are that they are Americans doesn't hurt.

I don't know what your problem with blockbuster movies is. Apparently you think they have no relationship to reality? Would you have us believe that there aren't any who espouse the doctrines of America for Americans or America, Love It or Leave It? We can talk a little more when you have something to work with other than contrived disdain.

And was given me to give 'Notice; to 'America" of her impending; 'judgment! that with violence shall America be thrown down; and shall be no more at all. "Is not America a Blasphemer?" "Requesting God to bless the "ABOMINATIONS" But draw near hither! Ye" sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer and the whore. Against whom do ye sport yourselves? O kingdoms of America: And thou saidst, I shall be a lady for ever: so that thou didst not lay these things to thy heart, neither didst remember the latter end of it. Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children: But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments. As Alaska Governor, Palin slashed more than 10% of the state's budget in 2007, and vetoed $268 million in state projects. Comments, Nessie?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Ness,

Agreed, but it does give you a pretty good idea as to how she ran her town as Mayor and her priorities at the time for the people of Wasilla.

I would say she did go after earmarks when she could to benefit her town and I don't really blame her for that and only after she become Governor of the state did she start to try to wean the State off earmarks overall. She inherited a State that was addicted to the Federal Largesse for years and she's only had two years in office, but in those two years she has reduced her states dependency on earmarks.

I would say her priorities shifted from doing what she thought was best for her town to doing what is best for the entire State, once she saw how really dependent the entire state was on congress and it's whims that shift with every political tide.

Everything that I've researched so far in her record as Governor is to try make Alaska far less dependent on Washington than in the past as she can.

Sailwind - But as Vice President, she's going to keep Alaska on a tight leash! Ha ha ha! What I want to know is what she's going to do when President McCain starts killing the Eskimos for their oil! Ha ha ha!

Nessie - Palin also has an 80% approval rate in Alaska, the highest of any governor.

I would say she did go after earmarks when she could to benefit her town and I don't really blame her for that

I don't blame her for that, either, as I intimated in a post above. It's her pretending to be against slush projects that she initially supported that I think is dishonest.

Everything that I've researched so far in her record as Governor is to try make Alaska far less dependent on Washington than in the past as she can.

If this is true, then it's good news, and it will make her an anomoly in the current Republican framework.

I guess now would be a good time to ask whether Palin supporters would still support her if the extramarital affair story -- unsupported so far -- turns out to have any truth.

I should also point out that when gas prices are rising, as they had been, you don't need as much Washinton largesse and in fact it's harder to justify such largesse.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

****Where would one find a politician nowadays that hasn't had extra-marital affairs or smoked pot? One would be easier found among televangelists.

I would bet, after the Alamo, ole Davy Crockett lit up a reefer and had himself a senorita.

I'm so damned sick of this political crap that I no longer care who gets elected. We've had nothing but crooked, lying clowns in the white house for the past 30 years. Nothing will change for the working man.

Anyway, I favor Palin over Hillary. I wonder if anyone has checked her background.

It just didn't make any sense. McCain claims to support the troops, but when a veteran protester held a sign claiming that McCain votes against the interests of the troops, he was dismissive and called the guy "ground noise and static". He didn't refute the claims. He just encouraged the crowd to ignore the guy. To which, the crowd responded by chanting "USA,USA". How is demeaning and insulting a veteran with legitimate concerns about McCain's voting record patriotic?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Hoss1; 1 guy protesting cannot spoil McCain`s image. Dissent will not be tolerated by the McCain, Palin camp.

America is going to enter a golden age of prosperity with McCain, Palin at the helm. Any company or business that steps out of line will suffer no nonsese zero tolerance. We will drill our way out of Mid East oil dependency.

Things are looking damn good folks.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Colonel - "Dissent will not be tolerated by the McCain-Palin camp"

Absolutely. In fact, I hear rumors they will dissolve Congress and impose martial law. No more gridlock! Hee hee!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

ColAmerica - I can't tell if you are making some farcical joke or just insane."Dissent will not be tolerated..." Sounds familiar. Don't know who said it but I could swear it was someone scary. Yeah, that's American values all right. We don't tolerate dissent. Democracy ROCKS! Sarge - I assume you were joking since you tagged it with "Hee hee" but the funny thing is....yeah sadly, there's nothing really funny about that.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I'd rather they give more specifics about what they are going to change than just talking about change, change change. Sounds nice, as does " taking on Washington". Makes everyone go "yeah, go get em!!" But, what does it mean?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The editorial cartoonist, Tom Toles, put it best about McCain-Palin:

"Except for economic policies, and tax policies, and energy policies, and health care policies, and education policies, and Karl Rove-style politics -- except for all that, we're really going to bring change to Washington! We’re really going to shake things up!"

And Republicans, who treat the average voter as an ignorant sucker who can be manipulated by his/her fears, expect people to overlook the obvious. Thank you, Mr. Toles.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

There is no "big shakeup" coming. Whoever wins the election is only a president and has to work within the limitations of that office. This is campaign hype.

What is true is that a Rep president would at least preserve a divided government, whereas a Dem president would mean all 3 houses are under the control of one party.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

WilliB,

All 3 "houses"? Do you mean the Executive, the House of Representatives and the Senate or do you mean the Legislative, the Executive and the Judiciary? Traditionally, I think, we have thought of checks and balances as being the latter.

It seems to me that if the Republicans win the Presidency, there is a strong possibility that all 3 branches of government would be controlled by them. The Judiciary is currently said to lean conservative and that will not change. The Senate is evenly divided and all the House will change. If McCain has long coattails he could bring in Republican majorities.

If the Democrats win, the Judiciary will still be conservative. It seems to me that if preserving a divided government is a good thing, the chances are better with a Democratic Presidency.
