The American public are getting a close up look at just how Trump ran his own businesses. If he didnt get what he wanted, he circumvented the system, no matter who's or how many feet he stepped on along the way.
I hope the congress gets enough votes to override the expected veto!
Strangerland
Good. Make Trump explicitly veto this, in opposition to more than half the Congress people in both houses. His base will love him, but more of the non-partisans will be alienated by his abuse of presidential power in unilaterally deciding how billions of dollars of American money should be spent, in defiance of those who were elected to control the national purse strings.
The more he isolates himself, the more ineffectual he becomes. So force him to isolate himself with his extremist views.
Chip Star
Is it possible for Trump to become more ineffectual?
jcapan
Come now. Doing things we disagree with doesn't mean he's ineffective. Look at his own list (i.e. read it and weep):

It's not nothing.

We've been over this. I fully recognize that Trump has done some positive things. That said, I stick to hyperboleon these threads because that's what Trumpophiles do. I'm not trying to change the tone of political discourse on online message boards.
SuperLib
We should stop the minority on this.

“...if we take away those checks and balances...”
Trump can become a Putin and accelerate the US more fully adopting the political belief system Mussolini and others tried forcing on Europe in the 1930s.

Let’s see now - Obama couldn’t pass DACA in Congress so he circumvented the system and just issued an executive edict and it’s still in effect two years after he left office. If it worked for the Dems why should Republicans unilaterally disarm and wall themselves off from the same tactic? Obama blazed this trail of executive power and Trump is simply following his example. You could say that the declaration of emergency is an example of leading from behind.
jcapan
I'm not saying he's done positive things. I'm saying he's been highly effective at doing very bad things.
SuperLib
Nah, the DACA argument was created for non college educated Trump fans. This is about giving the President the authority to raid military funds for pet projects.
lincolnman
And again reality intrudes into Trumpers binary world of Lib and Con.
This is a pure smackdown of Trump from his own party - and it's about time. Where are the rest of the Repubs who ranted about Executive Branch overreach every time President Obama would declare a holiday. We know where they are - they're missing in action...
Grow a spine Repubs in Congress - show you're not the craven, hypocritical pols everyone thinks you are - tell this Incompetent Idiot we have in the oval office that you wont allow him to further endanger our country...
Laguna
Wolf, apples and oranges. Obama essentially prioritized limited ICE resources on apprehending, prosecuting, and deporting dangerous immigrants while allowing those leading productive, peaceful lives to continue doing so. DACA in no way interfered with congress' power of the purse.
Congress explicitly rejected Trump's wall funding request. Trump is trying an end-run around congress' prerogatives. This is quite different from DACA, and conservatives should be alarmed no matter their opinion of the wall itself.
Chip Star
Fair enough.

Looks like the rats are beginning to jump ship to save their careers

Hey Mitch, you say you advised Donnie against taking this course of action, yet you're not going to vote against his action? What type of hypocrisy is this? Oh, wait, you're looking to support your job and your party instead of the Constitution of the United States you took an oath to defend. That makes your actions a lot clearer.
I don't particularly believe any of the 4 Republican senators. They've talked tough and caved before. I'll believe it when I see it.
Serrano
Too many Democrats and RINOS in the Senate. That will be fixed in 2020.
Pukey2
Either fulfil your promises and get Mexico to pay for the wall, or pay for it yourself. Oh, that's right, your wealth has been inflated.
Strangerland
Less than 50% of the senate are Democrat.
Seems like your team is turning on your leader.
smithinjapan
'"That's one reason I argued, obviously without success to the president, that he not take this route," McConnell said.'
But then supported him because you are an absolute coward.
Goodlucktoyou
But trump was elected on his promise to build the stupid wall.
plasticmonkey
It's pretty funny that Trump is now considered by some to be a true Republican. Fiscally irresponsible, recklessly autocratic, morally reprehensible, shamelessly dishonest, vulgar and mean-spirited, and sycophantic to foreign dictators/murderers. Did I forget anything?
Ronald Reagan would have no place (or desire to be) in today's GOP. That's not an exaggeration.
As for McConnell, the man has no backbone. If he had constitutional reasons to oppose Trump declaring a national emergency, he should have done something about it earlier. But I have little doubt that McConnell gives a fig about the powers of Congress. He's happy to let governance be handled by the executive and the legislative.
Republicans with integrity will rue the day the GOP hitched their wagon to Trump.
lincolnman
Just idiot, lazy, incompetent and wimp - courtesy of Ann Coulter...
It's the flat out truth - Reagan would be disgusted with someone like Trump...romping with a porn star? Insulting Gold Star families?
As Donnie said, he's a "snake" - or is it a turtle?

And there seem to be fewer and fewer of them....
Serrano
Less than 50% of the senate are Democrat.
Seems like your team is turning on your leader.
Like I said, too many RINOS.
bass4funk
Ok, Mr. President use your phone and pen and Veto the measure. Don’t let the Weasley Democrats or the Spineless and cowardly Republicans stop your agenda. Whatever it takes.
He’ll hire more people, no big thing.

What, hire more Senators? How's he going to do that?
Chip Star
Agreed, except for the childish hyperbole regarding. Repukes and Dems. Expand that presidential authority so the next democratic president can grab everyone's guns under a national emergency edict.
So much winning for democrats. They completely forced Trump's hand into expanding presidential powers. Your 800-D chess player just got beaten by libs!
SuperLib
The minority shunning democracy when it doesn't suit them.
