Just goes to show, when you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns. Mexico has some of the strictest gun control laws in the world. There is actually only one gun store in the country (run by the military) and yet all of the gunfire and killings that go on there make Detroit look tame. Guns flow into Mexico from all soursces not just the US, just like the drugs made there not only end up in the US but other parts of the world too.

But, good work on busting the drugs. I hope that none of the arresting persons get themselves and their families killed by the cartels.

Would you like us to legalize prostitution across the board too as it does make about as much as this drug trade. what about crack, meth, etc... skipthesong, you are comparing marijuana to crack. May as well compare BB guns to fully automatic rifles, or say that if we allow economy cars to drive the roads, what's next? Formula one cars straight off the track? We are doing just fine with alcohol being legal. Marijuana is even more benign. timeon has the right idea for marijuana. He was not talking about crack, full autos, or F1 cars. Lets not get carried away.

This is HUGE, HUGE drug bust! What scares me though, is that I know these scum narco terrorists will now want REVENGE,that means they may go wild and start killing off cops and soldiers (Mexicans for now) and Tijuana is a nice town, but it is just too bad that these mafiosi can not stop being so violent. I hope Obama puts the US police and army on alert near the border with Tijuana, because there may start some kind of mini assault for hard core revenge, and the Mexican police and army are out gunned by all the Made in USA guns flowing into Mexico ILLEGALLY from North of the border, USA, so just keep on smoking away and try to think that your bong hits have nothing to do with all of this violence.

I always wondered why weed came in from Mexico as it can be grown anywhere in the US. You can grow it in your closet in the middle of winter if you're so inclined. It's the prohibition that drives the drug cartels so just legalize it and tax it.

One scenario, if it's legalized major corporations will get involved in growing it. It will become cheaper because a) supply will increase b) no need to hide it from the cops c) no need to transport it very far. Plus, there will be no need to buy cartel marijuana when Bayer and Exxon deliver it to your local convenience store.

With the increase in competition, it would financially benefit the cartels to go legit and pay taxes. They could also reduce their overhead by laying off their armies, further increasing their profits.

If cartel leaders didn't pay taxes - it's much easier to prove tax evasion than illegal drug or alcohol sales - that's how they got Al Capone, who claimed to be a used furniture dealer and was never seen transporting or selling alcohol. And yes, there was a turf war between the tax man and bootleggers but the surviving bootleggers turned legit. (Although the illegalization of alcohol helped create organized crime in a big way.)

borscht, You make good theoretical points, but I seriously doubt that someone who sits on an empire that makes up to hundreds of millions of dollars a year, will all of a sudden feel the need to do the right thing and get taxed.

Most of the cartels are overseas, so their incomes wouldn't be taxed by the US, yes their businesses would but if they are not US citizens their personal income wouldn't.
