All drugs should be legal and controlled for tax purposes.

"The figures in Mexico are so scary that it has produced a subliminal sense that Mexico is a dangerous place and you'd better keep away,"

Understatement of the month! They peeled a victim's face from his skull and sewed it onto a soccer ball.

Yeah yeah, it probably won't affect you if you are tourist and not doing anything related to drugs. But there's a million other paradises to relax at where you don't have to worry about your face in a game of footy.

As long as there is demand there will be illegal drugs. And as long as there are people there will be demand. So...

Legalize weed and take away that portion of the crime world's market and income. Second, explore legalization of other substances that can be controlled and managed with the exclusion of addictive substances.

Hard drugs have to be taken on with law enforcement. You cannot legalize heroin, cocain and crystal without unleashing monsters on society beyond their current negative impact. So focus the war on drugs against these crime segments and quit wasting resources on non-addictive drugs.

Without an armed populace the criminals have free reign.

Well, the cartels fight each other to a large extent. The death toll is high because both sides are heavily-armed, often with actual Browning machine guns mounted on armoured SUVs, as well as grenades and RPGs from El Salvador's old civil war.

Unfortunately, the figure of "69 drug-related murders" only refers to the bodies that were actually found. Many more are dissolved in acid and never found. Look into the case of "El Pozolero" (The Stewmaker) for more details about that horrific aspect of the drug wars.

I always laugh at Americans who think that their puny little semiauto handguns or civilian rifles would be any good against a cartel attack. Look; the top cartels have weapons like the AT4 anti-tank missile. You'd die if you tried to fight them with a Winchester or Sig-Sauer.

An armored suv only protects from small arms fire = 30-06, 8mm, 7.62x54 will cut thru that easily. In fact it will go thru the frame rails quite easily, into an engine block etc.

Many fools think that these AKs, M16s semi-autos (7.62x39, .223) are the weapons of choice, but any armed farmer knows different. Sig is one of the best makers of small arms and for larger arms I would recommend the Sig 57. But for home use a shotgun works wonders.

The point is, when you get hit by a "team" of 50 zealots and ex-soldiers, you are not going to prevail. That is what often happens in Mexico. Labour is cheap; the cartels can throw wave after wave of men after any given "problem." If you make yourself a problem, you will die. It doesn't matter if you are well-armed, or if you are a cop, or even (increasingly) if you are in Arizona rather than Chihuahua or Sinaloa.

If the cartels want you dead, you die. The cartels have people within the US Border Patrol and the FBI working for them. How do you plan to deal with that?

@couversaka - you're a bit of a conspiracy freak, aren't you...

Zealots/bullies don't make the best soldiers or husbands. I am not a Lib and I expect Mexico to be responsible and make the right changes or else their populace will suffer.

-You can't blame everything on the USA and their tighter border security. -The game is changing and these cartels are having difficulty.

-Don't use drugs and support these cartels.

Supply and demand. Rather than legalize drugs, get rid of the demand, and make the supply worthless. Such a crazy concept apparently...

And Japan keeps a highest 6 months free Visa system with Mexico. Any person from Mexico can come here and certainly become a overstayer easily. The US is so near to them that they are busy with crossing the border. Otherwise, Japan would be flooded with Mexicans like Arizona.

How to fix it:

1) The US buys cocaine directly from the Government of Colombia and heroin directly from the Government of Afghanistan, for use in treatment programmes. Addicts register, and the drugs are available on prescription.

2) After a while addicts are transferred to methadone and cocaine substitutes, and supported with counselling and psychiatric drugs.

3) Within a couple of years new and unregistered addictions are heavily criminalized. Prison sentences and solitary cold turkey are compulsory. Exiting former addicts are transferred to the psychiatric program.

4) At the same time the penalties for dealing are made draconian. 30 years for possession with intent to supply, reducible only in return for informing on others. 50 years solitary for trafficking. Natural life solitary (never see a human face again) for gang leaders. Mandatory death sentence for production or possession of crystal meth.

Drugs ruin the lives of our most vulnerable citizens. We can and should eradicate addiction and exterminate dealers. All it takes is flexibility (buy direct, register, treat) and determination (higher taxes for extreme sentencing).

Please forward the text of this if you like these ideas.

Everybody comments about either "drugs, the horror, the horror" or "legalize all of them and it will stop." Wrong answer, this is not a drug war at all, but a civil war. The drug lords are in the "people's war" of a sort. In the first stages of the war you simply shake out all of the weaklings, establish leadership, and get a experienced fighting cadre'.

In the case of Mexico, you would not need popular support to take over the failing government. Once the drug dictators control the countryside, they can use terror as a tool of "recruitment" aka conscription. Eventually, the professional solider class will side w/the drug lords to be on the winning side. Bada bing, bada boom, another junta type government south of the US border.

Just legalize pot and you've solved most of the problem.

Maryland just legalized it for medical purposes. You know the state is well aware that a lot of people will get Rx for Marijuana, just to get a good supply of good pot. < :-)

if you legalize one drug, you have to legalize them all; wouldn't want to look like a hypocrite. Plus marijuana is not the only drug of choice in most cases. A lot of the drug lords are getting into crystal meth and ultra-mixed cocaine and heroin. If you legalize drugs, it will be harder to regulate and it won't stop these guys from making drugs. No society has prospered from drugs, it has only made it worse. Many countries in Europe have legalized different drugs before with disastrous results. The US should never make the same mistakes.
