Mexican president says she is confident that a tariff war with U.S. can be averted

So am I. As soon as she can come to the final realization that she will be securing the Mexico side of the US border and not allowing fentanyl and illegal aliens to pass through.

Trump had earlier threatened to impose 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada until those countries satisfactorily stop illegal immigration and the flow of illegal drugs such as fentanyl into the United States. He also said Chinese imports would face additional tariffs of 10% until Beijing cracks down on the production of materials used in making fentanyl.

Wonder if he'll do the same for adderall, or the other substances which were apparently pretty easy to get during his first term.

Maybe if other leaders acted like the President of Mexico, they would not have to grovel to Trump

It would be pretty amusing if she made him look stupid...I mean even stupider than he already is. I can't imagine there are many things which would make him feel worse than being outsmarted by a woman, let alone one from a country he clearly looks down on.

She made Trump look less of a man, especially when dealing with a hot temperd Latina

I can’t imagine there is a world leader more stupid than Trump.

I would have argued for our very own Liz Truss, but she's fortunately no longer in power. (Apparently, though, she's trying to get a foothold in the USA, so I'd like to say sorry on behalf of the UK for that).

But yeah, with her out of the way, he has no opposition on that front.

Wow, the discourse from the left has just devolved to name calling and juvenile level commentary,

that loss must have been devastating, half your team never even came back here after election night.

sure, fine let her “girl boss” a second for those who will fall for that. We all know how it’s gonna end.

-9 ( +3 / -12 )

Wow, the discourse from the left has just devolved to name calling and juvenile level commentary,

I don't know. I see one comment about hypocrisy (he'll go after Fentanyl but not the host of drugs which were said to be floating around the White House during his first term) and a handful of reasonable observations about his general mental acuity, which world leaders have said in public.

5 ( +9 / -4 )

US made toy: $19

Chinese/Mexican made toy: $9, slapped tariff, now $30

US made toy now: $28.99

Not to mention that companies from other countries will find it more expensive to do business with/in the US, so they trade with China instead. Reducing American influence everywhere else. Trump tariff is exactly what China quietly wants, the world not trading with the US.

Trump is basically Xi's lap dog.

I can. How much time you got?

US should stop the flow of gun to Mexico

I think Mexico will buckle either before Trump is sworn in or before Summer next year.

Again, all Mexico has to do is to control the flow of Drugs and illegals coming in, it’s not that hard, she just needs to step on the necks of the Cartels a bit more, but she has the power of the military and they’re not so corrupt, so use them. She can definitely avoid a tariff war.

And they'll pay for the wall right! LOLZ

The cost of those taxes would likely be borne by U.S. families, importers and domestic and foreign companies in the form of higher prices or lower profits.

Anecdotally, I already know workers feeling the pain of Trump tariffs.

A company that uses foreign sourced components is having to buy a huge supply of these components before the installation of Trump tariffs in a couple of months that makes them much more expensive.

So Xmas bonuses have been zapped!

Thanks Trump!

Uh, please don’t put words in my mouth. I did not say such a thing.

-11 ( +1 / -12 )

the discourse from the left

Anyone who opposes Trump is a leftist. It's that simple.

all Mexico has to do is to control the flow of Drugs and illegals coming in, it’s not that hard,

Trump could do it in 24 hours if he were President of Mexico. It's that simple.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

America could secure its border to prevent American weapons from entering Mexico. Most drugs do not enter the US across the Southern border. Most enter via a port of entry. That is well known for years.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Trump could do it in 24 hours if he were President of Mexico. It's that simple.

Well, it’s up to them. They did last time, but I get it, she’s trying to see how far Trump will go, well, she’s in for a ride. I love my Avocados, but California ones will just have to suffice.

-10 ( +1 / -11 )

Trump is not even POTUS yet and he is delivering results already. Be it in the Middle East or Mexico. What a contrast with the current White House occupants. Deflated Biden/Harris team and its supporters are spinning.

"She made Trump look less of a man, especially when dealing with a hot tempered Latina."

Bruh, in all honesty 99% of grown men are reduced to a boy status when dealing with angry hot tempered Latinas. LOL. Scary stuff.

Sure. But not good ones.

Trump doesn’t do well with strong women.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Sure. But not good ones.

For the U.S. it is

Trump doesn’t do well with strong women

Cuban said that and he’s still reeling from that insult. Mexico is the US's biggest trading partner. Bigger than Canada and China. I cant wait for Trump to close the border and bring in the Tariffs! See what happens! Going to be explosive to say the least!

"Why 90% of the U.S. avocado supply comes from Mexico. The U.S. eats a lot of avocados. Here's why the country's production won't catch up with demand. Avocados have become nearly ubiquitous in American society, served at fast-food outlets and fine dining alike as demand grows."

1 ( +4 / -3 )

So avocados will be $5.

but we will get 300 billion in tax payments and the border will be secured by us from illegal aliens (cost savings) and drugs (saves lives). And we can use the tariff payments to benefit programs for Americans.

man that Trump guy getting stuff done, it’s like he is already President.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

"Why 90% of the U.S. avocado supply comes from Mexico.

The U.S. produces a significant amount of avocados as well, primarily in California, which accounts for about 90% of the country’s total avocado production. Florida and Hawaii produce them as well, so we can easily adjust for that.

The U.S. eats a lot of avocados. Here's why the country's production won't catch up with demand.

We can, we just never met the challenge

Avocados have become nearly ubiquitous in American society, served at fast-food outlets and fine dining alike as demand grows."

And if Mexico wants to fight this war, other countries can take its place if need be that also grow avocados. Dominican Republic, Peru, Colombia, Indonesia, Kenya, Chile, Israel, Spain, Brazil, South Africa.

So Mexico should bring it on, if they really think they can win this, go for it, but I seriously doubt it will come to that.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

we will get 300 billion in tax payments

Paid for by American consumers.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

They did last time

What did Mexico do last time?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Buckle

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

Buckle

What did Mexico "buckle" on? Did fentanyl and illegal immigration cease?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Paid for by American consumers.

and then returned to them in the form of tax reductions and special programs.

this revenue plus the cost cutting of DOGE could lead to some wonderful new benefits for Americans- instead of illegals and other countries.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Aren’t high prices really just “price gouging” by evil corporations anyway?

or has the election loss already changed that failed narrative to “trump’s fault!”?

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

What did Mexico "buckle" on? Did fentanyl and illegal immigration cease?

Mexico agreed to President Donald Trump’s border demands on June 7, 2019, during his first administration. This agreement followed threats from Trump to impose escalating tariffs on all Mexican imports unless Mexico took steps to curb illegal migration. Mexico committed to deploying its National Guard to its southern border and expanding the Migrant Protection Protocols (also known as “Remain in Mexico”), requiring asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their U.S. immigration cases were processed.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

tariffs are on the wholesale import invoice, not the retail price.

if the wholesale cost is 40 cents, the 25% tariff adds 10 cents to the cost.

the $2 retail price doesn’t have to go up to $2.50. it could go up to $2.10 to cover the tariff.

but some retailers will go to $2.50 and make 40 cents more profit, since the average consumer read some factually incorrect thing by the associated press and other media.

21% of the u.s. population is functionally illiterate. they read, write, do arithmetic and have the cognitive skills of a 9-year old. they’re easy prey and the media enables it.

what, 3 people really think tariffs are on the retail price?

oh my.

How many economists actually believe this bunk?

Well, they will be ok. I am sure of it.

Newly planted avocado trees take 3-5 years to produce fruit—it does not happen overnight. American avocado growers cannot meet the demand.

tertiary effects of tariffs include reduced demand for usd as nations reduce u.s. debt holding in response. and that affects the usd by...

naw, that might be a little too esoteric if someone doesn't understand the fundamentals of tariffs.

Noooo, how can a liberal live without the the smashed avocado on toast and a cup of 5 ways customized decaff soy latte? Damn Trump, he is really pushing it.

Of course not and that’s why we have the other countries that can deliver including our own to supply the demand

At the same high (tariffed) prices as Mexican avocados. Brilliant plan.

I think bass4funk would take offense at you calling him a liberal. After all, he's brought up avocados more than anyone. ("I love my Avocados")

No, I just think liberals wasted too much time fighting other nation wars giving money to other countries and putting the U.S. on the back burner and they are so used to the status quo, why change. Well, finally we have President that will do what the other Presidents wouldn’t and if the left doesn’t like it….oh, well…

Gee, all the US has to do is curb its voracious appetite for recreational drugs and cheap, exploitable undocumented labor. I mean it is really so simple. The demand for labor and drugs comes from the US. If there was no demand for drugs the narcos would have nobody to sell too. If farms and businesses using illegal labor were confiscated and the owners and managers sent to prison for a decade or two the demand for illegal labor would dry up in a New York nanosecond.

But that would require blaming Americans for their many problems and we all know that is not allowed. America by definition is blameless. It is always and forever some other nation's fault.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

No, I just think liberals wasted too much time fighting other nation wars giving money to other countries and putting the U.S. on the back burner and they are so used to the status quo,

You are exactly like the Repubilicans of the 1930s who claimed Hitler represented stability for Europe and who called Winston Churchill a war monger for standing up to Hitler's aggression after Neville Chamberlain's capitulation to Hitler in the Sudentland.

Today is almost exactly like 1938. If the west surrenders Ukraine to Russia the way Chamberlain surrendered the Sudetenland to Hitler there won't be "peace in our time". Such weakness will only set the stage for Russia to attack Moldova, Poland and the Baltic States, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

You are a fool to believe otherwise and that foolishness will bring great tragedy to the US. We stand up for Ukraine today not because we are war mongers but because we fully recognize that not doing so guarantees WWIII . WWIII is preventable but only by defeating Russia in the Ukraine.
