Ah, you had to post that picture of the dead child. Grotesque sensationalism, everyone deserves dignity, even in death.

You guys should warn before putting pictures of dead people on here.

How did we reach the point where people trying to emigrate, legally or not, feel they have the right to demand the conditions of their entry? The photos are really scary. I can't imagine what Europe will be in a few years if this is allowed to continue.

What a mess. no easy solution. human tragedy but EU can't take all these folks either. I guess the heartless view would be that they should stay in their home countries and try and sort things out. but clearly in the Middle East and some of Africa that is not an option. and when the UN or NATO try they just make things worse. Plenty of these folks were fine living under Saddam or Assad or in Somalia or Eritrea before we interfered. as for the ones from West Africa, they have been coming for years and are economic migrants. As for pictures, they are more eloquent about the suffering and desperation than words.

There are dozens of islamic countries in the region, but these hundreds of thousands (and soon millions) of muslims insist on going to the infidel countries of the old Europe. And demand that they are housed, fed, and accommodated there. And Europe will submit.

I can't imagine what Europe will be in a few years if this is allowed to continue.

It won't be Europe anymore. In fact it already hasn't been for a long time. Thanks to mass immigration, the European culture will disappear. Japan should really take a lesson from this.

The abhorrent lack of compassion shown by some humans to other humans in desperate need saddens me beyond words.

Well, Europe says goodbye to its culture and heritage. Its nations are bankrupt and unable to provide for its own citizens let alone the hordes of new arrivals. But it has diversity now and that is the most important thing. As long as there is diversity, Europe will be happy and nobody would dare complain about that.

Interesting that, when confronted by images of a dead child of about 1-2 years of age, only two commenters (Wakarimasen and Paustovsky) have made comments that display any sort of humanity while all everyone else can say is "ew, stop showing me those pictures" or "OMG, European cutlure and Christianity is going to be destroyed by hordes of these evil people overwhelming us and forcing us to speak Arabic and convert....gasp gasp...."

My personal reaction on seeing the photo was first and foremost deep sadness - the kid looks exactly like my own when he is sleeping. The message I got was "this is what happens when you ignore people in need."

My next reaction was to donate 140 bucks to the UNHCR which is trying to provide the basic necessities to Syrian refugees. Its not much but it will keep a family alive for a month or so and it is probably the only thing I can do from Japan that will make any difference.

Freaking out about some sort of imaginary existential threat to European culture never crossed my mind.

It has nothing to do with the message that the media is trying to give about lack of humanity. There are people in this World that would like to be warned before viewing pictures of dead bodies. I was reading this article while my son was behind me playing. If you think that not wanting to see a picture of dead body when I wake up in the morning eating breakfast is inhumane so be it.

Fair point, apologies for implying you were inhumane. That said, the photos in this article are tiny thumbnails at the bottom you have to click on to really see. Not quite the same as when you are scrolling through Facebook and the full images suddenly pop up (which is how I first saw them).

Thank you. If there is one thing I do find comfort in it is that these images are making indifference harder for people to maintain. Personally, yesterday I only had a general awareness that there was some sort of refugee crisis going on thousands of miles away but since it didn't affect me I pretty much put it out of my mind. Now I care about it and actually feel an obligation to do something to help.

The internet usually just reinforces my laziness, but at least this time it has spurred me to do something. Hope other people feel the same way. Maybe most don't, but hopefully some do.

The photos are propaganda. They'll be blasted by the media non-stop in the coming days. Anyone who supports the rule of law and the concept of borders now lacks humanity, according to rainyday. Anyone who disagrees with open borders will be labeled a bigot, a nazi, a fascist. Sorry, but not everyone is so easily manipulated. A picture of a dead child is the most basic propaganda tool that exists.

Its not the fact that you puport to support the law that means you lack humanity, its the fact that your reaction to a picture of a dead child is to spout smug, self-righteous indignation at people being moved by it. The human reaction is empathy and anger that this sort of horrible suffering exists. Your reaction lacks either of these.

I'm not indifferent to the suffering, but I know what a dead child looks like, I don't need to see this image posted on the internet for cheap sensationalism. If you need to see the photo of a dead child to trigger your compassion and humanity, then I pity you.

So what, people weren't moved by the 71 dead in the lorry, the thousands dead at sea, the people run over while walking on train tracks? People need a picture to know that people are dying? The fact that every single major media outlet is now blasting pictures of this dead kid above articles demanding Europeans take more refugees is what makes it propaganda. People are using this dead kid as a tool to advance a political agenda. Of course I'm indignant about that!

Nobody is saying they need a picture of a dead child to trigger compassion. What I said was seeing that photo inspired me to become much more aware of the plight of these refugees than I had previously been (not for lack of compassion but simply because it was something happening far away without any impact on me) and, moreover, to actually try to turn my newfound concern into action that might help some of them out.

This would distinguish my reaction from, say, someone whose concern manifests itself in proclamations of a lack of "indifference to the suffering" and condescending remarks expressing pity for people actually trying to do something to help.

All wars and conflicts have victims young and old. Most of the photographs I see of these migrants as the media is calling them are middle eastern men with few women and children. What scares/disturbs me is that europe is being overrun by muslims with no documentation. How many of these migrants are muslim extremists taking advantage of the chaos and slipping through the system to take up residence all over europe and establishing jihadist networking cells. I love europe and my family roots come from europe but the future culture and basis for european life just got screwed big time, europe will lose its local cultures and become diversified like the usa and look at what a mess the us is in.

The closest region of China is about as far from Syria as Sweden. Then you have all the central asian countries like Kazakhstan around 1000km from Syria. Potentially very low cost level (per refugee) if used for until they can return home. Yet you never hear any such talk. Now ask yourself: Why? Isn't the purpose supposedly helping people in immediate danger? Aren't we supposed to save as many lives as possible for the money spent? Why is the West expected to house unlimited numbers of migrants?

Pathological altruism in a nutshell.

Really the picture of the dead infant is nothing more then mere sympathetic triggering propaganda. When opposition to this mass illegal migration grows, and it is growing throw out some picture to gain sympathy like the noted picture above. Of course things like this happen all time somewhere around the world, but no need to show all of these cases as it would reduce the shock value. Once sympathy is gained then they will ask of you to take more of these people in.

Really the humane thing to do is simply to prevent these people from landing in Europe and deporting the ones already there. For all this "compassionate" and "humane" language garbage really comes from people that have never met to dealt with these so called "refugees". An elderly couple in Italy just a few days ago was murdered by the very same pets you want to cuddle. People that live near the "refugee" camps often find themselves mugged, harassed and if female raped by these "hapless" souls. If your living complex is near their camps and you go on vacation, expect your belongings to go missing while your gone and these illegals to squat in your own home while your gone.

Of course the likes of you will NEVER extend the same amount of compassion and humaneness to the victims of your own illegal immigrant pets.

They say what comes around goes around. These Europeans played a major role in destabilising middle east and north African countries and now the people in those destablised countries want improved and stable societies wat better place to go Europe and next stop wil be the top head USA. It took Europe centuries of religious wars, persecution and yes, beheadings, to finally find a way out. Now there going to have to do it all over again. Anyway, in the long run, 300 years from now, maybe it's not a bad thing. I mean, who cares that Europe will no longer be Europe. While indeed in normal people it does trigger sympathy, it also seems to have provoked a lot of smug, self righteous contempt against them by people like you. This is exactly the same rhetoric that people used to justify turning away Jewish refugees from Germany in the 1930s.

Yes, clearly in a situation where people, including young children, are dying by the thousands, our sympathies should lie first and foremost with the adverse effects this is creating for people with holiday homes on Greek islands who are, after all, the real victims here.

You have truly shamed me. I now understand how insensitive I have been. Fortunately it is still possible for me to claim a refund from the UNHCR, so if you could just direct me to a charity that tends to the much more pressing needs of Europeans whose holiday plans have been inconvenienced by all these annoying dead refugees I will immediately take that money back and put it where it can do the most good.

These so called migrants are not content to remain in Turkey or Hungary, they are angry because they can not get to richer countries like Germany or France. They should be happy that they made it this far and settle down. The Hungarians are not throwing them out, they are creating camps to house them until some resolution can be found and applied. What is going to happen in Germany when 800,000 so called migrants are sitting in their streets, are German families going to share their homes with these Muslims? How is Europe going to weed out the Jihadists from the pack if they carry no documentation? This is a mess and merely letting these so called migrants into all of Europe is going to cause huge problems that Europe may never solve.
