The troublemakers in Indonesian should interogate themselves before protest the Miss World 2013 in Indonesian. Because their favorite music "dangdut koplo" is more porn-action and uneducated. When concert, dangdut koplo the artist wearing sexiest. The singer dangdut just Moslem from java, and now tohey'r protest the advantages fabolous event. Actually, the place should held the event in North Celebes Manado, the majority of Christian in Indonesian and the located so very far from java. North Celebes Manado near by philpines but still in Indonesian area ... I think no one session of miss world (even bikini or swimsuit) will be ignored if the event in Manado. The people here 80% Christian and very wellcome of Miss World event. And the point is far from the troublemaker FPI the Moslem... They'r just Making troubles for Indonesia. That's why Indonesian never being the top up country even thou Indonesian is a rich country.

Somehow I think the radicals in Malaysia would get their noses out of joint over the pageant as well....

Unfortunately the protests causing trouble often end up being a bomb blast, at which point it's too late to lock 'em up.

I have to wonder how tone deaf the organizers and government are to think that this wouldn't stir up trouble. The troublemakers always want something to complain about, it's how they get those donations flowing in.

"in the face of radical Muslim protests"

Let the radical Muslims protest. Unless they make too much trouble, in which case, lock 'em up!

Jean: Be that as it may, both the Indo gov and pageant organizers stuffed up

You are a foreigner to their culture. Stop imposing your views on them.

Beauty pageants are an anachronism in today's world.

Until there is a reasonable expectation of general acceptance of the pageant, it should be posponed and moved to another country and Indonesia should not be considered as a venue in the future.

but some areas are Hindu, like Bali where they're proposing moving the event.

Very true. However, I remember the bombing in Bali. The minority has the dangerous potential to make their voices heard again. Better to stay out until they sort out whether the citizens can accept such activities without making a fuss.

Frungy,

" the Indonesian government actively lobbied and ASKED for this contest to be hosted there."

Be that as it may, both the Indo gov and pageant organizers stuffed up. The gov was likely focussed on economic benefit without considering public acceptance.

JeanValJeanSep. 11, 2013 - 09:26AM JST Just as islamists should not try to impose their cultural/religious mores on other societies(France for instance), neither should western cultures try to force something like Miss World pageant(which I personally like) on Indonesians.

You make two mistakes:

They're not trying to impose their culture, the Indonesian government actively lobbied and ASKED for this contest to be hosted there. One does not get an international event like Miss World by saying, "Oh dear, please don't come here, this sort of thing is against our culture.".

Indonesia may have a majority of Muslim citizens, but some areas are Hindu, like Bali where they're proposing moving the event. This means that Muslim radicals won't have to see scandalous things... unless they travel to Bali to watch, or tune into the right channel on their TV.

And there was just an article on JT about the views on rape in Asian countries, Indonesia was high on the list. Yet, they can't handle a beauty pagent, because I guess it will just get the men "rilled up." I hope next time they just bypass these types of places and have the event in some place that is more willing.

The organizers should have had their collective heads examined for staging the pageant in Indonesia in the first place.

By-pass this so called "moderate muslim" country in the future. The fundamentalists look like they're the ones that are wielding actual power.
