Well if that is their culture that's their culture. It's up to those in power in S.A. to take up the matter if they so desire. Even though we may not like this bit of culture we are not obliged to take action on it.

Why stop at SA men? Why not take the study and just say one in three men admit to rape? Stats are funny.

If you polled 487 (lets say) white south african males you would probably find a completely different result to (lets say) polling 487 only Xhosa or Zulu males.

Exactly. Its like having a survey claiming that "1 out of 3 Brazilian men admit to sell drugs" by examining a number of 500 participants from the favelas.

Sorry - replace "tribal" groups with "ethnic" groups to include rooineks, boers, Indians and others.

I think this survery is extremely misleading. SA is home to (I believe from memory) at least 18 different tribal groups with different cultures, traditions and ethics. If you polled 487 (lets say) white south african males you would probably find a completely different result to (lets say) polling 487 only Xhosa or Zulu males.

It is absolutely NOT 1 in 3 "South African men" - I would put money on it being 1 in 3 men from a specific group within which culturally rape is accepted as normal.

molenir,

"So, essentially what this is saying, is that if people went into SA, took aside 1 out of every 3 men, and executed them. The world would be a better place."

No I've read some stupid comments on here, but that could be a contender for the crown.

Not sure I agree with your police work there, Lou. (Problems with murder of innocent people aside, your application of statistical inference needs remedial work.)

"How many men in South Africa DO NOT ADMIT TO RAPE" (Some people don't admit to it because they don't do it.)

So, Elbuda, have you stopped beating your wife?

"and if we divide the number of the participants in the survey with that...then it makes something like 0,00001948%"

The "I can use a calculator, but my brain needs batteries" award goes to Antonios. (a couple too many zeros there Tony?)

"The sample space is too small to make such a generalisation..."

Thanks for saving the thread, YongYang. Yes. Election results in the US were "guessed" from numbers that were not too much bigger than this.

The most disgusting thing about this generalization is that this many men admitted to committing a violent felony. This speaks volumes to how sick that society is. They don't care what they did and they don't care that they will get caught, which sort of explains Elbuda's comment... and makes one wonder if the real ratio is higher than 33% or whatever. What really caused my jaw to drop was that they just casually admitted it for some stupid study. No shame at all.

Still, 20 years from now, 50 years from now, Apartheid will still take the blame, just as "colonialism" does in other hopelessly failed regions, because no one ever holds these criminals accountable. I wish these bleeding heart liberals would stop making excuses for these awful behaviors and instead demand that the rule of law be enforced, at least where there still is rule of law.

Spot on, S. Africa is not a country of barbarians, and where there's still the rule of law it must be enforced...

Wow, South Africa really has come a long way since being liberated from apartheid, hasn´t it.

So Apartheid is to blame? Not the individuals? I suppose Apartheid, nearly 20 years after its demise, is also responsible for the witch burning, the practice of necklacing (putting a tire filled with gasoline around someone's neck and setting it on fire), the belief that Aids can be cured by having sex with a virgin (usually by rape), the sky high murder rate, etc? No, because these practices occur in the rest of Africa, too.

@Betterdays, no, it is perfect to make a 'generalisation' but not large enough to assert any truth / fact.

Rape in SA is an appalling reality, women in SA who are openly gay find themselves 'cured' of their 'illness' by rapists. One of SA best female footballers was murdered in this way.

The sample space is too small to make such a generalisation...

I'm once again worried by comments by a colleague poster. I quite remember this same poster made a distasteful comment about the Cambodian stampede because they are a third world country and that we shouldn't be surprised by a similar stampede in India pretty soon. I'm referring to mexicano. Once again you are generalizing it as a problem peculiar to ''many of the poorest countries on that continent'' Even if you gonna believe in this bogus survey as explained by Antonios M, spare us the generalization.

Ok, i am not from South Africa, but saying that 1 out of 3 South African men admit to rape out of a survey of AN area of 487 people, isn't it a bit TOO MUCH? I mean, the population of South Africa is almost 50,000,000. If we consider the male population to be around 25,000,000 people and if we divide the number of the participants in the survey with that...then it makes something like 0,00001948 % percent of the male population. Is it really accurate to say "1 out 3 South African men admit to rape" judging by this percentage???

I'm going to assume you meant "AIDS" there.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Wait , wait Molenir, this says 1 in 3 ADMIT to rape, so come on, yes, use that brain of yours, aha! How many men in South Africa DO NOT ADMIT TO RAPE? Very scary indeed, and also AIFS is a huge problem not only in SA but in many of the poorest countries on that continent.
