Funding is needed to research the link between climate change and whale beaching, again.

.
Interestingly, a rare oarfish that typically resides in depths up to 3200 feet deep has washed ashore in the Canary Island.
According to Japanese mythology the surfacing of this fish is considered a harbinger of doom - when the oarfish surfaces and washes ashore that is supposed to portend some imminent catastrophe.
Wonder if that applies to these beached whales.
Sad and very disturbing to see nature in distress.

Why spend money on that? It will not change anything.

Probably due to an underwater nuclear test.

What’s the real cause of the mass stranding of these crustaceans that seems to occur too often? Is it parasites, their filial nature to the leader, or submarine sonars?
Harry_Gatto
Whales are mammals not crustaceans.

I am sure he meant cetaceans, not crustaceans.

Present the scientific basis for the request, that is what happens when scientists actually think climate change is related. Contrary to what you believe research grants are not given just by putting "climate change" in the title but only with actual scientific justification that can convince the committees in charge of evaluating if something is worth doing or not.
If there was actual justification (not something said in the article) how would you know? People complained about the value of studying gila monster saliva, it ended up producing very effective medication that is changing treatment for diabetes and obesity.

Harry_Gatto and EvilBuddha,
Thank you for the correction.

The matriarch could have just gotten lost and the other whales followed. Nothing human related.
Or they could have been running from Japanese or Chinese whale hunters. Doubtful.
Or 5000 other possible causes which just aren't clear to land animals (like humans) yet.
If research funding is desired, feel free to fund it. And it should be clear that the US won't be funding it as Trump cuts that sort of research. Would be great to see NZ, Australia, Japan, and China work together on this, assuming they don't kill any whales as part of their process.
