Very sad for a lot of families here and overseas. Let’s hope something like this doesn’t happen again.

RIP to those lost.

RIP

Sad times.

My thoughts are with their families.

Yes a very tragic event.

So let's also commemorate and honor those people who died from other bombing incidents, regardless of what side of the political spectrum their leaders were.

It's a pity and a fact that, by its "kid-glove" treatment of the terrorist perpetrators, the Indonesian government has never shown sufficient sympathy for the unending hurt and sorrow of the victim's families and survivors. The ever touchy nationalist sentiment and religiosity of the Indonesian authorities is why the terrorist attack in Bali has been more a cause for embarrassment than for shame and self-reflection. RIP.

That's sadly what you get when a twisted mentality thinks they are right

While members of the Indonesian government might not be fundamentalist or even practicing Muslims, there are regions within Indonesia that are decidedly so. Their government has to walk on egg shells to keep the nation together and prevent a violent separatist movement within the regions that are home to the most strident fundamentalists, who obtw just happen to see these barely dressed foreign tourists as an assault on their values. I don't agree with the fundamentalists of any religion and am not religious myself but can see clearly that the hand the Indonesian government is dealt by its own people make it very hard to achieve the kinds of human rights and religious freedom standards typical of western nations. Imposing a western style constitution on Indonesia would lead to a revolution. The people there are not ready for that.

I have to agree with your description of the Indonesian government's delicate position vis-a-vis the muslim majority, but the government is itself guilty of having politicized religion (Islam), too, creating an unholy cocktail of politics and religion so they must also reap what they have sown. Fascist militarism kept the lid on for decades, but when it comes to religion (Islam) in Indonesia, everybody must walk on egg shells, or else...

Hmmm, but did the government politicize religion or did religion politicize the government there? How does a government that aspires to be a representative democracy deal with a region that demands Sharia law? How does this government handle its people when some of them are perfectly willing to kill anybody who does not comport to a strict interpretation of Islam?

Been to Indonesia too many times to count. Only Muslim country in the world where you can see women walking around in tight hot pants, midriff showing and wearing a hijab on their head. But I agree the Indonesian government does have to walk on eggshells. They have 5 national religions enshrined in their constitution, Islam being the majority. But those terrorists weren’t from Bali. Bali isn’t even Muslim, it’s predominantly Hindu. Do you think Indonesian muslims would eat Bali Pork?
