Although I'm almost certain he won't be the next president — most of the diminishing number of people who still call themselves Republican even find him repulsive — I hope this very public debate helps to ensure that he does not become POTUS.

Trump has been burning bridges and alienating everyone but the Tea Party types. Once the election is over, he will have a hard time finding anyone anywhere who wants to enter into a business deal with him.

His opinions are abhorrent and, being British, I would be happier if he didn't make it into the country. Freedom of speech has to be an issue here, though, and it doesn't seem to me that there are reasonable legal grounds for barring him entry.

As mentioned in the article, the Home Secretary can ban his entry if they determine that he is "fostering hatred," which he clearly has against Muslims and Latino immigrants in particular. There are even many members of his own party that accuse him of doing so. Previously, Michael Savage was denied entry into the UK on those grounds.

Kudos to the MPs! Trump's bigotry needs to be slapped.

Trump stated that there should be a temporary ban on Muslims until the government could figure out how people like the San Bernadino terrorist were able to get through the immigration system when there was public evidence on social media that she was radicalized. I do not agree with the blanket statement of all Muslims. But it would be reasonable to "temporarily stop" immigration from Muslim countries with a known problem with radical extremism. Immigration isn't a right - it is a privilege granted by the host country.

Imagine if the British themselves had done this back in the 1990's before allowing in hundreds of Muslim men from the Middle East who formed gangs to systematically assault, rape, and abuse over 1,400 of their own young girls in Rotherham.

Just think of how many young girls would have avoided the trauma of being caught up in a large ring of sexual predators whose crimes were systematically covered up by politically correct bureaucrats and law enforcement officials. A "temporary" halt to immigration could have allowed officials to strain out the political correctness that allowed for these abuses to take place and averted at great deal of misery. It doesn't sound unreasonable if you look at it that way.

The debate in a small parliamentary committee room was purely symbolic—Britain’s government has already said it will not >>ban Trump and lawmakers did not even vote on the issue.

The British government, if the public allowed it however would embrace Donald Trump as long as they thought it looked good.. There are many on the tory right who believe that he is correct. The conservatives are ideologically aligned with the republican party and their ideas are very popular among older xenophobic tory voters here. The UK has history on this though. Geert Wilders wasn't allowed in, and he was one of the few voices of reason re Europe's problems with Islam.

I've said enough about this elsewhere but above all else, it shows exactly what was talked about in various fora following the end of the last war in that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance. America has not been vigilant, has sold its birthright for a bunch of filthy lucre, and Trump (which in some parts of the UK is a slang word meaning "fart") is just the latest fallout from all that. If he comes to the UK, I don't really care but if he does I suspect that he will be met with a sizeable protest.

Most of those who come back are arrested. Out of a population of 65 million we have 2.7 million people who are Muslims. 4.5%, and most of them are from Pakistan and Bangaldesh. 575,000 is around 1/6 of the number of documented muslims in the UK (3 milllion), so I'm sure that they'll be able to achieve such a number by themselves.

I don't think he should be banned because he is outspoken. The UK has a culture of allowing free speech. The UK has always simply allowed speech it doesn't like, just like the USA.

Many Europeans now agree with his views on Muslims and it would be explosive if he was banned, and might in fact spur a reaction from people who only mildly support him. Remember that at least 10% of Brits voted for UKIP and 30% of French voted for FN.

It's the free speech that allows Muslims to speak out against gays, and it's the same free speech that allows gays to speak out against Muslims.
