exactly.

We get some horrible and stupid imams (if that is what they're called) coming into the UK and spouting their extreme muslim nonsense.

I'd like to see them banned from entering rather than Donald Trump.

Also, muslims who don't subscribe to our western norms and freedoms should be banned from entering, too.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

His opinions are abhorrent and, being British, I would be happier if he didn't make it into the country. Freedom of speech has to be an issue here, though, and it doesn't seem to me that there are reasonable legal grounds for barring him entry.

Wow, fools calling a fool a fool. But the people are even bigger fools for electing these fools, and the fools the fools will be fooled into electing in the future.

MPs debate banning 'fool' Trump from Britain

It will be interesting if Trump becomes president. Stranger things have happened. They will hardly be able to refuse him then

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Going to be some awkward silences if UK winds up hosting President Trump for tea and crumpets.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

As stated in the article, his popularity shows how far the land of Lincoln and Roosevelt has fallen. How very true. I wish we could ban him from America. We will have to settle for not electing him President.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Britains should be embarrased by this.

It is irrelant if they disagree with Trumps opinion, or if they think he is an idiot. Do these MP clowns think they should regulate visa policy based on their idea of what is the correct opinion?

3 ( +8 / -5 )

The Parliamentary calendar is chock full, every hour wasted could be spent on debating 101 higher priority issues, from the NHS, Immigration and asylum, gender segregation, hate speech on university campuses, to UK Sharia courts now numbering eighty five dispensing their summary 'justice'. Or perhaps the inevitable 20,000 Jobs losses, a result as oil price falls below $27 PB.

Nevertheless 50 out of 650 members of parliament decided to spend 3 hours descending to a toe curling display of playground politics, hurling childish insulting names across the Atlantic Ocean.

This utter waste of tax payers 'hard earned' could just as well have been spent on debating asylum status to what resides atop of Mr Trumps head.

It sure appears that the British Left is desperate to gin up a straw man for its phony arguments. Would be funny if it weren't for the sad fact that Britain continues to allow in its citizens and residents return after fighting for ISIS and other terror groups.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Hello Itsonlyrockandroll

Why can't UK politicians aggressively debate the agenda Mr Trump is advocating toe to toe, instead of Trump the 'man' and his ego.

Because its much easier to avoid the issues. Democracy.

Cleo

Oh boy. Let me just quote the following form Monty Python The Meaning of Life:

"Now some of you may feel that the cormorant does not play an important part in the life of the school, but I would remind you that it was presented to us by the corporation of the Town of Sudbury to commemorate Empire Day, when we try to remember the names of all those from the Sudbury area who so gallantly gave their lives to keep China British."

3 ( +5 / -2 )

"But it's ok for the US to listen to liberal looney UK bashing? That's seen as rational? How so?"

The US is listening to liberal looneys bash the UK?

The point I was making was that UK conservatives and even most kippers are sane compared to the Fox-fuelled, gun-lovin', don't-make-a-monkey-out-of-me yokels you have slobbering the place up over there.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

He would lower the tone but I wouldn't like to see him banned.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Cheney banned or even threatened with arrest if he enters a number of countries in Europe?

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Trying to skirt their own Muslim problem with a distraction so they come off as PC whiners.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

Wolfpack

I agree. Religions allowing and covering up sexual abuse of children is intolerable.

So, let's ban the Catholic Church, the Mormon Church, the and the whole Born Again Movement (Dugger Family).

2 ( +3 / -1 )

These M.P.s have thier heads where the sun don't shine! But what else can they say when they live in London-Stan! Mr.Trump is No Hump but speaks his mind & (unlike Parliament)will put his Rump on the Line against low down Swine! Bully for Him!!

I agree. I am no fan of The Trumpster, but seriously, who cares if the British parliament tries to ban him, if he does end up becoming the president, sooner or later, they would have to deal with him. So No need to worry.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

The Trumpster must be laughing his ass off.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

His opinions are abhorrent and, being British, I would be happier if he didn't make it into the country.

I can assure you that the opinions of the people he wants to keep out are far worse.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Fair enough, just as long as the US ban Ricky Gervais and Russell Brand.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

. You can be banned for fostering hatred and inciting violence, both of which are crimes, not ideas.

It's not the first time they have done this. And it is about ideas. No violence has been incited, and "fostering hatred" is a vague phrase that can be used to describe just about anything. Great for silencing political dissidents.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Another Conservative, Adam Holloway, added: “I feel we should almost apologise to the people of the United States—it’s for them to decide on Mr Trump’s views, not us.”

But I think it's for the British people to decide whether he's allowed entry to the UK, which was the point of the debate.

it doesn't seem to me that there are reasonable legal grounds for barring him entry.

I'm not sure that it requires legal grounds, just a decision by the Home Secretary.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

@Geogg: it doesn't seem to me that there are reasonable legal grounds for barring him entry.

@albaleo: I'm not sure that it requires legal grounds, just a decision by the Home Secretary.

As mentioned in the article, the Home Secretary can ban his entry if they determine that he is "fostering hatred," which he clearly has against Muslims and Latino immigrants in particular. There are even many members of his own party that accuse him of doing so. Previously, Michael Savage was denied entry into the UK on those grounds.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Because he is not a war criminal. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-26145293

1 ( +1 / -0 )

don't forget Ted Cruz, he is Trump with the volume turned down to level 3 of 10 but the far right Christian religion turned up to 11 of 10

1 ( +5 / -4 )

He sparked fierce controversy last month when he called for a “complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what the hell is going on.”

Trump stated that there should be a temporary ban on Muslims until the government could figure out how people like the San Bernadino terrorist were able to get through the immigration system when there was public evidence on social media that she was radicalized. I do not agree with the blanket statement of all Muslims. But it would be reasonable to "temporarily stop" immigration from Muslim countries with a known problem with radical extremism. Immigration isn't a right - it is a privilege granted by the host country.

Imagine if the British themselves had done this back in the 1990's before allowing in hundreds of Muslim men from the Middle East who formed gangs to systematically assault, rape, and abuse over 1,400 of their own young girls in Rotherham.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotherham_child_sexual_exploitation_scandal

Just think of how many young girls would have avoided the trauma of being caught up in a large ring of sexual predators whose crimes were systematically covered up by politically correct bureaucrats and law enforcement officials. A "temporary" halt to immigration could have allowed officials to strain out the political correctness that allowed for these abuses to take place and averted at great deal of misery. It doesn't sound unreasonable if you look at it that way.

But I guess the Brits want to get up on their high horse with the Germans as their women become prey for Muslim immigrants. That's for their conscience to abide. I wonder what they would say about Trumps "temporary" halt idea should 130 Londoners get slaughtered in the streets. Ahh, but such worries are just so politically incorrect.

1 ( +10 / -9 )

Hi Black Sabbath, I have always thought that banning is a short step away from booking burning.

The debate triggered by 575,000 signature public petition had to run its course, that is democracy I guess.

The atrocious timing, the UK's precarious finances and a current account deficit, recorded at £17.5 billion in Q3 of 2015, the impending EU referendum etc. Why can't UK politicians aggressively debate the agenda Mr Trump is advocating toe to toe, instead of Trump the 'man' and his ego.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I don't think he should be welcomed officially by the state, but that's not the same as banning. Let him in and let the satire shows rip him to pieces (metaphorically, of course).

The British habit of banning political figures they don't like

I'm not sure there is any such 'British habit'. You can be banned for fostering hatred and inciting violence, both of which are crimes, not ideas.

over half a million Brits wanted this debated.

Half a million out of 70 million, not really all that many. Many, many fewer than the 25% plus of Republicans, is it, who claim to support him?

Personally, I think the politicians should have spent the entire time explaining to the people who signed the petition how banning unpopular ideas is un-American

Err, I very much doubt there's a Brit alive who gives a toss about being 'un-American'.

1 ( +7 / -6 )

@BlackSabbath Do you honestly believe that coconuts migrate?

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Trump has an overwhelming negative effect on otherwise rational people, and brings out the worst in both his supporters and his detractors. Having him in the public eye any longer is a lose-lose proposition. Stick a fork in him.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

I really do believe that UK Parliament need s to focus on the fundamentals, the UK economy, pensions, sorry to sound like a warped record, NHS, junior doctors have participated in a unprecedented strike. Mr Trump is a political side show to hide at best.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

So, the Americans try to get Justin Beaver banned, and the British try to get our next positive and intelligent president banned.

Hold back the monies for those golf courses Donald. England is no longer a world power player anyway.

So we (The UK) wants to ban a man from entering the UK for exercising his right to free speech that was said in another country that constitutionally protects such rights?

We start going down that road, where does it end?

"He said we Brits have bad teeth and talk funny"

"He said what!?…..ban him!"

1 ( +1 / -0 )

It's not a "PC" move to call Trump a foment of hate. It's the ONLY move. Trump cares only for Trump and Trump's celebrity standing. He couldn't care less about the United States of America. When has Trump EVER been in any mode other than "LOOK AT ME!"?

1 ( +3 / -2 )

British Politicians and MPs are foolish too.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Considering that the government had already decided not to ban him, this discussion in London was just a lot of posturing.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

"The debate was triggered by a public petition which has attracted more than 575,000 signatures from people who want the Republican presidential hopeful kept out of the country over his comments."

A nice bit of theater for the populace. Protest a bit, learn a bit. That rascal! Trump!

For what it was worth this is hardly a political issue for the Brits. It is a matter of public safety. Haberdasher and television personality, Trump, presents an offensive racism and religious prejudice. The "public trial" had a predictable result.

"Trump’s behavior was “buffoonery” which should be met with “the classic British response of ridicule”." - Alex Chalk of the governing Conservative Party

“Donald Trump is a fool. He’s free to be a fool. He’s not free to be a dangerous fool on our shores,” - Jack Dromey, a senior MP in the main opposition Labour Party

The predictable result? In the court of "public trial" Trump is a buffoon. How dangerous a buffoon only the Americans can decide.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

575,000 is around 1/6 of the number of documented muslims in the UK (3 milllion), so I'm sure that they'll be able to achieve such a number by themselves.

I don't think he should be banned because he is outspoken. The UK has a culture of allowing free speech. The UK has always simply allowed speech it doesn't like, just like the USA.

Many Europeans now agree with his views on Muslims and it would be explosive if he was banned, and might in fact spur a reaction from people who only mildly support him. Remember that at least 10% of Brits voted for UKIP and 30% of French voted for FN.

It's the free speech that allows Muslims to speak out against gays, and it's the same free speech that allows gays to speak out against Muslims.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

don't forget Ted Cruz, he is Trump with the volume turned down to level 3 of 10

Disagree. Trump totally goes to 11. While entertaining to see the MPs vent, in the end I'm sure they'll do the right thing and allow Trump to go on his merry little way. He does have golf courses there, and he'll need them when he loses the election and has to rebuild his fortune.

First, Sabbath beats the Stones any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Ahyhoos,

?The debate was triggered by a public petition which has attracted more than 575,000 signatures from people who want the Republican presidential hopeful kept out of the country over his comments."

So, over half a million Brits wanted this debated. Personally, I think the politicians should have spent the entire time explaining to the people who signed the petition how banning unpopular ideas is un-American.

:)

I am curious to know how many of those signatures were from the Andry Chowder types (yeah, I know) and how many from Lenin's useful idiots.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

The debate was triggered by a public petition which has attracted more than 575,000 signatures

The debate in a small parliamentary committee room was purely symbolic—Britain’s government has already said it will not >>ban Trump and lawmakers did not even vote on the issue.

nevertheless, I do enjoy to see a country like UK, having debate made of people about question like those who are question about our society. I wish , the same was happening here. Glad to see the apathy is not everywhere in this world.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

One negative of letting US-style rightist stupidity into the UK in the form of Trump is that it would make UKIP look reasonable and intelligent in comparison.

With the EU referendum on the horizon, that could be dangerous.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Also, muslims who don't subscribe to our western norms and freedoms should be banned from entering, too.

I second that! It is the masses of refugees who MUST adapt to western norms and freedoms. Not us "tolerating" more and more of them in our own countries. Its nonsense. Ban Trump, okay. And ban the moderate and radical imams all across europe. Don't let let them convert more abandon churches throughout Europe into, "Mosques."

0 ( +7 / -7 )

It is good that the MP's responded to the petition.

The British government, if the public allowed it however would embrace Donald Trump as long as they thought it looked good.. There are many on the tory right who believe that he is correct. The conservatives are ideologically aligned with the republican party and their ideas are very popular among older xenophobic tory voters here. They are biding their time and use every bit of negative news regarding immigration, integration, cooperation to their advantage.

Voters under 60, fight back!!!!!

Terrifying but true.

"They really are making it so easy for the satire shows."

Imagine how much fun they'll have with President Trump.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

And Sarah Palin adds this gem of inspiration . . .

"How ‘bout the rest of us? Right wingin’, bitter clingin’, proud clingers of our guns, our god, and our religions, and our Constitution" (delivered Tuesday, January 19, at Trump endorsement parody.)

Had the British waited, they could have had two banning for the waste of time spent on one non-banning.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

As exhibited by those MP's, it appears that Britain already has enough fools of its own without allowing foreign ones into the country.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Another Conservative, Adam Holloway, added: “I feel we should almost apologise to the people of the United States—it’s for them to decide on Mr Trump’s views, not us.”

Its also up to German people decide on their view of Adolf Hitler, and we all know what happend

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Please don't ban him. We'd like to get rid of him, even it's only for a short time!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

isn't Cheney banned or even threatened with arrest if he enters a number of countries in Europe?

No biggy. Europe is being taken over by muslims and muslim refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan and North Africa. Islam is the fastest growing religion across Europe. Terrorism has occurred in Paris (twice), London and Madrid.

Soon there will be more turmoil. Who the heck wants to go to Europe?

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

But I guess the Brits want to get up on their high horse with the Germans as their women become prey for Muslim immigrants.

Some German vigilante groups are fighting back though. Soon law enforcement will start turning a blind eye to the hundreds of refugees roaming the streets of eastern europe committing a crime(s).

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

One negative of letting US-style rightist stupidity into the UK in the form of Trump is that it would make UKIP look reasonable and intelligent in comparison.

But it's ok for the US to listen to liberal looney UK bashing? That's seen as rational? How so?

I concur! I would be as well.

Seeing politics slipping across the globe to the right and the US with it's Bush and now maybe Trump / dumb and dumber. I think I would like that one way ticket to Mars.

That's a complete repudiation of Obama's 8 years over the top progressive and disastrous policies, snide, conceded, egocentric, self-absorbed governing the country doesn't want anymore. From here on out, I think for a lot of liberals NASA will have its hands full and their work cut out for them.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

Regardless of your opinion on Trump and I am not a fan, preventing him from entering the UK seems a bit petulant.

The UK has history on this though. Geert Wilders wasn't allowed in, and he was one of the few voices of reason re Europe's problems with Islam.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

The point I was making was that UK conservatives and even most kippers are sane compared to the Fox-fuelled, gun-lovin', don't-make-a-monkey-out-of-me yokels you have slobbering the place up over there.

That's brilliant... never heard anyone call Farage sane before lol

The UK has banned undesirables before, such Julien Blanc, that guy who came up with plans to seduce women, a whole bunch of people promoting terror, etc. Trump is also an undesirable, so perhaps he should be barred from entering the country...

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Though initially British, American use 'bonkers' too.

Yes. It was the name of a rather poor cartoon series, ISTR.

And yes, I signed the petition for this to be debated. I've said enough about this elsewhere but above all else, it shows exactly what was talked about in various fora following the end of the last war in that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance. America has not been vigilant, has sold its birthright for a bunch of filthy lucre, and Trump (which in some parts of the UK is a slang word meaning "fart") is just the latest fallout from all that. If he comes to the UK, I don't really care but if he does I suspect that he will be met with a sizeable protest.

That's brilliant... never heard anyone call Farage sane before lol

Farage and Trump. Sounds like a match made in hell to me!

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

I signed the petition too Mistie710.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

@Commanteer... in the UK hate speech is a crime.

As for Trump, his verbal flatulence is akin to that of the British National Party - far right racist nutters hijacking the Union Flag for their own ends.

The UK does NOT have a Muslim problem - a tiny fraction of those living in the UK support IS and their goals. Those who try to leave and fight and sometimes captured. Most of those who come back are arrested. Out of a population of 65 million we have 2.7 million people who are Muslims. 4.5%, and most of them are from Pakistan and Bangaldesh. Less than 1000 have left the UK to fight in Syria. Sorry for going off topic but ignorant news reporting in America shows a hugely distorted image of life in the UK.

So no, this isn't trying to 'disguise a “massive Muslim problem" '

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Freedom of Speech! AND DON'T FORGET IT British Fools who don't know what it means! Living under a Monarchy divided by four plus names called the "United Kingdom" Ha!

They really are making it so easy for the satire shows.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

The British habit of banning political figures they don't like really does make them seem a small and petty country - getting into North Korea pettiness almost.

I wasn't a fan of Trump, but now I would enjoy seeing a person banned from the UK becoming president. I guess they would have to meet offshore somewhere to discuss anything, to protect those delicate UK sensibilities.

-2 ( +6 / -8 )

Seeing politics slipping across the globe to the right and the US with it's Bush and now maybe Trump / dumb and dumber. I think I would like that one way ticket to Mars.

Meaning, who cares if the British parliament bashes Trump or anyone else for that matter. They can bash all the day until the cows come home, No one here is listening or even remotely cares.

The point I was making was that UK conservatives and even most kippers are sane compared to the Fox-fuelled, gun-levin', don't-make-a-monkey-out-of-me yokels you have slobbering the place up over there.

Buddy, that's your personal opinion and you are certainly entitled to believe that.

Your country is becoming a cesspool because of it`s PC whining groups. Your statement is very silly. Start worrying about companies jumping ship and job losses if Sanders gets in. Trump 2016 and 2020.

A debate in parliament must be held on the issues raised by any public petition on its website which attracts more than 100,000 signatures.

For the 575,000 of you from the UK who signed this petition, thank you.

Although I'm almost certain he won't be the next president — most of the diminishing number of people who still call themselves Republican even find him repulsive — I hope this very public debate helps to ensure that he does not become POTUS.

Trump has been burning bridges and alienating everyone but the Tea Party types. Once the election is over, he will have a hard time finding anyone anywhere who wants to enter into a business deal with him.

-5 ( +8 / -13 )

Trump owns properties in the UK. Employs Brits. Is the UK now Muslim? If the MSN media was responsible and report the full dialog and not clips perhaps this headline would be different.

Nonsense. Simply nonsense. Simple nonsense that not one of us here acts as if he really believes. We all freely slag off Abe, or Blair, or Mr. Galloway, or Clinton, (the non-Americans)

Saying we shouldn't get involved in the domestics politics of our allies is dishonest. And stupid.

Stupid, because when our close allies elect fools, that affects us. So stop the stupid they=don't=have=no=bidness=talking=bout=us blather.
