America is getting sicker and dumber by the day.

Mancini says officials questioned Ali Jr for nearly two hours, repeatedly asking him, “Where did you get your name from?” and “Are you Muslim?”

“Where did you get your name from?” and “Are you Muslim?”

100% inexcusable.

Not pretty, but pretty disgusting.

"Hold on a sec people. wohhh slow down. This has been going on since Bush and 911. There are millions and i say millions of stories about such incidents. America and its hate for muslims stems from the bush era and nothing has been or coukd have been done to fix this disgusting behavior during Obama.

People will blame anything they can on Trump. You guys are the ones who are disgusting for not having the kahhoonas to do or say anything before Trump and now just jumping on a wagon. Do some searches and read about these millions of instances on the news that yall chose to turn a blind eye on. Shame on you!"

Very spirited. Would you concede that Trump has turned it up the gas?

FizzBitFEB. 25, 2017 - 11:03PM JST Sounds like Fort Lauderdale airport immigration is doing there job.

Well, if "there" job is to practice bigotry, yeah, they are. If "there" job is to actually stop violence against Americans, they would be far more successful if they asked, "are you white, do you own a gun, and are you angry about being unable to get laid?"

An Australian author of children's books, who had visited America over 100 times, was also detained for two hours. What the hell is going on? Do they WANT to piss people off? http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/accused-of-having-an-incorrect-visa-mem-fox-detained-by-immigration-officials-at-la-airport/news-story/aa712d3867d1509c52c3608798e19db5

Imagine if you substituted another religion and were questioned as such:

Are you a Jew?

Are you Catholic?

I wonder what happens to TSA agents of Muslim faith.

“Where did you get your name from?”

How can you be American and not know about Muhammad Ali's name ?

been going on since Bush ... People will blame anything they can on Trump.

I blame it on people that voted Bush, Bush and then Trump. They know who they are. Happy ?

The media doesn't do a good job of explaining that "Muslim" != "extremist, crazy, religious, type". I have many Muslim friends. They are kind, giving, thoughtful people. Their faith is always on their mind - and it would be for you too, if you had a habit of praying 5 times a day and going through daily fasting for a month every year for religious reasons.

I wonder what happens to TSA agents of Muslim faith.

From what I've seen, they don't travel much. Hard to travel on $10/hr. Rent and baby formula come first.

I agree with the general sentiment above. Whenever I enter the US I'm always stunned by the rudeness of the immigration authorities. It's creates a horrible first impression for anyone visiting America.

However, I think it's also worth remembering that we are actually talking about a member (or suspected member) of the Nation of Islam; a quasi-militaristic, racial supremacist organisation that opposes interracial marriage and many of the secular and tolerant values that the US has a duty to protect. The NOI has previously been funded by the likes of Muammar Gaddafi and other shady figures linked to terrorism. It's not exactly comparable to the cases of ordinary Muslims who get profiled when they come to visit Disneyland. If a known racist, white supremacist KKK militia member were attempting to re-enter the US, I think it would also be legitimate for the authorities to find out why.

However, I think it's also worth remembering that we are actually talking about a member (or suspected member) of the Nation of Islam

So we're NOT "actually talking about a member" as we've NO PROOF

Yet we see, laughably (if it wasn't so scary) that it immediately gains currency:

Important info for this story. I wonder why AP left it out...hmmmmm....

As for:

If a known racist, white supremacist KKK militia member were attempting to re-enter the US, I think it would also be legitimate for the authorities to find out why.

As a citizen the white supremacist - unpalatable as it may be - has every right to return home

Where's your proof that Muhammad Ali Jr is a known racist?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Next time ya get detained at an airport, just say to yourself, at least they're doing their job even when you're a citizen

Thank you for your candour, M3:

I have no idea if he is a member (of Nation of Islam) or not.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have witnessed - right here - the birth of an Alternative Fact: a spurious notion published on a whim (and quite out of character for this poster); latched onto by a Lügenpreße! conspiracist, who screamed:

Important info for this story. I wonder why AP left it out...hmmmmm....

AP left it out because it's a total fiction. But the Chicken-in-Chief™ has retweeted much worse.

Selma, meet Salem.

Ali Jr's father was A, so the Jr. must be, too!

I notice the son isn't suspected of being a gold Olympian, campaigner for the reelection of Ronald Reagan, or recipient of two separate presidential medals (Dem and GOP).

Can we seriously believe...

How dare we speculate. They were US citizens going home. End of story.

@SenseNotSoCommon

So we're NOT "actually talking about a member" as we've NO PROOF

I have no idea if he is a member or not. But that's why the authorities are well within their rights to ask. If his father was one of the group's most prominent members, it's not unreasonable to assume he might be as well.

As a citizen the white supremacist - unpalatable as it may be - has every right to return home

Yes, but the role of customs and immigration is not simply to wave citizens through. In addition to restricting the entry of non-citizens, they also investigate cases where American citizens may have engaged in activities abroad which could be prosecuted within the US. Material support for terrorism and being a member of a terror group are examples. All I'm saying is that even if this was motivated by bigotry, anything that involves the NOI makes it complicated. There are more egregious examples of Muslim profiling out there.

Sounds like Fort Lauderdale airport immigration is doing there job. AP will continue to spin these stories into fake news for the fluffy soft lefties. Shocker.

Too bad his son had to go through that, but as you said, at least they were doing their job properly. I was once stopped at an airport in the US because they said, I looked probably on that day like a terrorist, I was pulled aside and it took about 20 minutes to check me out and verify everything and then they handed me my passport and I was on my way and I wasn't angry, kinda of glad at least during that time, they would thoroughly check you out.

In. Vegas, business owners know if they discriminate any people, they lose business. When Mafia csino ownrs were chased away by Harry Reid create black book they sold their business to Hughes. He hated black people so he oooobstructed. Ali sennior's game but other casinos did not. Gradually, Hughes had to close casinos. Senior Ali, was great. Now, his son gets mistreated. But coon't blame Trump. He says things about immigrants but his business has a whole bunch of South East Asian female employees musty like others. Their English? Worse than my typo error full commends here. Again, not Trmp's fault.

@SenseNotSoCommon

I share your concern about alternative facts but I think it's also important to remeber that they can be spun by both sides. I think we have to admit that some of the reporting on this story has been a bit dubious to say the least. Take for example the Guardian which reported:

Ali had been at a black history month event in Jamaica with his mother, Khalilah Camacho-Ali. She was allowed to enter the country after producing a photo of herself with her famous ex-husband, who died last year, but her son had nothing to prove his link to the boxer.

Can we seriously believe that an old photo with Muhammad Ali was enough to convince the authorities to let her in, but not Mr. Ali Jnr because he didn't have one? I just can't believe a photo with a celebrity would sway the authorities and this is probably a bit of an exaggeration (because, as you pointed out, it's not as if they can deny entry to a US citizen). So it leaves me a bit sceptical about the 'Are you a Muslim?' claim as well. I think there is alot more to this story and until we have some slightly more objective witnesses come forward to corroborate what happened and provide some context, I'm basically treating everything as 'an alternative fact' or at least an unproven one. Let's also remember that 99% of people who are subjected to additional screening at the border feel horribly violated and think it was entirely unjustified. Unfortunately, the agents involved probably can't come forward to give their side of the story.

That said, I certainly feel sorry for Mr. Ali Jnr since he is always going to face increased scrutiny because of his father's links to the Nation of Islam (which is not an alternative fact). It might seem unfair but the authorities can't just ignore it. To use an extreme example, the same scrutiny would be applied to the extended family members of someone like Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi even if there was absolutely no solid evidence that they are actually ISIS members or ISIS supporters. The circumstantial evidence alone is enough to justify a closer screening.

Again, knee jerk reactions from people that stay at home too much. And I can't count the number of times that I have been bodily searched, had my suitcases inspected, questioned etc. I was once surrounded by three cops at Itami airport and pulled into a corner and searched. One time,I was also being set up for a cavity search but I talked the customs agents out if it

Welcome to the real world Ali Jr!

Assimilate or face public ostracism - time honored method cultures used in maintaining social tranquility. The boxer, Mohamed Ali, was originally called Cassius Clay, after the famous Kentucky statesman -The Lion of Whitehall - before converting to mohammedanism was camp.

Whenever I enter the US I'm always stunned by the rudeness of the immigration authorities.

Have to agree with this. Just went through them a few days ago. I was red flagged for trying to bring Japanese milk into the US many years ago and had to go through a second inspection. The inspectors were kind enough but the gatekeepers, no. I do think they're trained/selected for this. On the other hand, Japanese immigration are not so rude, but serious, yes.
